Giant Gun in Oakland: Space Tech's Wildest Project! #spacex #space #engineering
In this brief segment from Ashlee Vance's YouTube video, two on‑camera hosts walk viewers through an unusual sight in Oakland: a massive, legally permitted "space gun" housed inside a shipping container. The device consists of plastic tubing capable of propelling metal projectiles at speeds exceeding four times the speed of sound. The speakers highlight the eclectic surroundings—a Chuck E. Cheese, a homeless encampment, a water‑treatment plant, and an AAA office—underscoring the odd juxtaposition of a high‑tech launch system within a dense urban environment. They question why such a large gun is needed and who is responsible for it, ultimately revealing that the gun is intended as a low‑cost method for sending payloads to space. The exchange blends curiosity, mild skepticism, and a hint of excitement about the project's potential to disrupt traditional space‑launch economics.
