Startups move faster because they skip the playbook that slows down big companies. Large firms get bogged down by process while startups obsess over execution. Elon Musk's approach to production problems shows the difference: intensity and focus versus bureaucracy.
People forget this. The like company playbook doesn't work.
Oh, I gotta hire VPs of this, duh duh duh duh duh. You forget that like what does Elon spend most of his time doing is like solving production problems.
All the critical path stuff, yeah.
You're managing these Manhattan Project technical behemoths and you gotta operate like that. And it never stops. Like there's never a stopping off point where you're like, wow, we built the sales playbook and it just works. No, no, you're like in it every single day. It never stops.
How do we compete with China if that's the reality?
I think there's a lot of talent in the primes that are so bogged down by the fact that they are 100,000, 200,000 person companies and they're kind of impedance matched with the Pentagon. Everything's a process. Unleashing that, I think, is huge. But I don't think we can pretend this is like an industrial playbook that we can just like— it's like a SaaS company.
