Boutique Hub Events | Kelly Helfman's 2020 Spring Summer Trend Talk | MAGIC August 2019

Kelly Helfman (WWE Magic Project lead) presents a short trend talk at MAGIC August 2019, outlines logistics changes for the show (venue/hall reorganization, a one-show consolidation in February at Mandalay Bay), and gives her top five Spring/Summer 2020 trend picks: dye effects (tie-dye/ombre), 80s glam (power blazers, sequins, puff sleeves), crochet styles, sporty materials (nylon/mesh/glossy), and baggy pants. She answers audience questions on cash-and-carry locations, a new Place Pop Up, and how to find brands offering extended sizes via the event app.

So I oversee WWE Magic Project, Women's Stitch and Cool Trade Show. I'm very lucky to be here. I actually started when I was 24 years old. I've been here about 13, 14 years, and I started off as a customer service rep. I used to ask all these booths for money and help them register for badges. So I obviously love this show, and I'm pretty passionate about my job. And my favorite thing is to answer each and every one of your questions. So whether it's by email or DM DMing me on Instagram, I always will do my best to try to get back to you. I actually brought a stack of cards, and I'll put them on this table the second we're done. And then please reach out anytime. Mindy, are you in here? Okay. Mindy, can you stand up, girl? Just say hey. So that's Mindy. She handles retail relations and really is here to act as a concierge for you. So if you're need some special assistance, have questions, need guidance, Mindy's your girl and can take care of you. And we have a couple others. I'm not sure if they're here. Gail. Anybody else? Gail also from the back. So she's back there waiting. Also in retail relations. So that is what we are here for. A few of you have had a lot of questions about changes with the show, and I know change is hard, and we're creatures of habit. We definitely changed up a lot this show. I don't know. Did you like the batch list registration? How are you liking this? No, really. See, I need to hear your feedback because here we think we're so digital and full of catching up with the times, but that's so interesting. So any feedback you can give me like that is super helpful. Good to know. We also obviously changed the venue. We moved all of Mandalay Bay over here. Now, that was to make it easy for you. We always ask the buyers, and they hate schlepping back and forth. So who liked that change? Great. Okay, I got one out of two. Now, I know it's a little confusing because we shook things around for women's, but south hall is WWD magic, and north hall is your destination for more contemporary fashion and all women's footwear. So project women's stitch and pool. Just make sure. And then Central hall is all men's. If you are looking for sourcing, it's upstairs in South Hall. And also upstairs in south hall is on pointe, which is a fast fashion footwear section. So that's pretty much the big changes we made, we did also make an announcement today because we have all the time issues. We're trade show organizers, and venues often get locked in dates, and we are going under construction. We're building the big west hall I'm sure you saw across the way, which we're super excited about the renovations. So for one show only, we're all staying together as one magic. We will not be in two venues, but for one show only. All of Magic will be at Mandalay Bay in February. Okay. So I wanted to just tell you that personally, we just announced it today. February will all go to the Mandalay Bay, one show only. And then we're going to pop back here again. Any questions at all, ask Mindy, ask Gail, ask myself. We're all here to help you through the navigation, the change, and thank you for the patience because I know that we're all creatures of the habit. We want to go to that. Oh, we know where she and sky is. We know where Bella Doll is, and we're shaking things up. That's why the app is so important, because the app is really to navigate you to the exact brands you want to your favorite, and then hopefully you'll find new along the way. So that app is a great resource. You know, we just launched it, so we'll continue to get better and better and give you those resources you need. That's about it. For the overview of Magic. Again, any questions, please reach out. So I'm going to do this in about 5, 10 minutes. And because you have so much to go over today about the awards, I'm going to give you my top four or five trends that I'm seeing on the show floor that will be ready at the for 2020 spring summer that you have to have some sort of variation of these trends within your store. Okay, so I'm gonna go over my top five. I actually have a panel tomorrow at the social house at 11 with Wendy Bondoni, who she really digs much deeper into the trends and is going to go over a lot more. But this is just like a little sampling. And don't mind me. I just need some notes because I can't memorize all this. Okay, so the first one, and I know you're seeing it everywhere. Die effects. And when I say dye effects, it is tie dye and ombre. Right. So not just tie dye, although we're seeing that everywhere, but it's also ombre. So the girls are going to show you a few. These are all brands from North Hall Project, women, stitch and pool Trade show that we're showing you different variations again of dye effects. So ombre tie dye. These are great options. Usually I, we do this for WWD Magic brands, but we thought we would change it up and highlight some of the brands in this haul. So check them out. I didn't memorize what every brand is, but we can definitely let you know. I know we have Bella doll is doing these loose fitting pants. Let's see. Yeah, I'll, you know, we'll leave these up here for a while so you can reference them if you love the pieces. But just make sure you have some variation. You know, I, I think a headband even for your girl if she's not going to wear tie dye and doing it that way or bells and accessories. A great way to do it. Okay, Next we have 80s lamp. This is of course my favorite because I love a good vintage throwback. 80s glam is all about the power blazer, the oversized jacket, a bright suit, strong shoulders, puff sleeve mini dress. And then the fabrics are really about sequins and feathers. Okay, so this would be what I'm wearing, a little bit of inspo from the 80s because I'm wearing a puff sleeve, a short mini skirt. But you see these silhouettes are really that 80s girl. And the silky metallics, a lot of these are from Aster and Aster actually has representation in both WWD Magic and here in the Play showroom booth in Project Women. So make sure to have some. You know, we've been seeing sequins for a while. I like these metallic shears and still the boxy blazer over gift and a good suit, right? Suit. I don't know who remembers my pink suit. Last show I'm like, how big did that get? So I, I think we're going to continue seeing that. And my favorite for the pink suit is actually cutting those pants to be shorts. So short suit sets is really going to be the next thing. Okay. Another one that we're going to see. Crochet all day. I call it instead of rose all day, we're doing crochet all day. So again, that is not going nowhere for spring summer 2020. So you can wear a belt bag as Samara has. This is from pool trade show. Great little belt bag. I actually think she's in cash and carry. And then crochet the dresses and the tops. You can wear it over a bra top or you can wear it over a full bodysuit. If your girl's a little conscious with jeans with spandex shorts, we're still seeing the 80s glam part. The spandex leggings are still in. So crochet, you need to also have some variations of some sort of. And I believe those the crochet on top are raga R A G G A. Next up, this is also a great one. So we've been seeing activewear for a while and it's still going nowhere. But it's just about the sporty materials. Okay, so sporty materials being nylon, something glossy or mesh. And that could be in a pant, in a vest, in a crop jacket. It doesn't have to just be an athlete. And the girls will show you some of these different materials I'm talking about. But the sporty material is important for you to have to stay on trend right now. So you'll see there's the mesh there and you could flip that over to show them the back, you know, the back detail with the mesh. So now where we're really wearing our activewear for full on day wear and nightwear. And then Samara has more of the glossies and the nylons. I just love that you can dress them up and gown. I feel like I would wear that crop jacket with a spandex legging and a heel out to the club, and then I would wear it with a sweatpant and a sneaker. So it's a good investment piece. And then last but not least are baggy pants. So baggy pants are going nowhere. I know we all still love our skinny jeans because it sucks us in. High waisted, it's still good. And skinny is great, but baggy is better right now and girls are just feeling comfortable. It's about being comfortable and not necessarily just, you know, feeling like you're all sucked in. So these are just different variations of baggy pants, but they're not just coming in cargoes, they're coming in a lot of denim. It's just looser and more comfortable with a fitted top. I would also say that you need to make sure the paper bag waist is in very much what I'm wearing today. For you guys, I usually try to show you an example. So taking it high waist with a paperback. This is another. My pants are vintage, but it's another example of how you wear a baggy pant. Sorry. I feel like I'm like model on the Runway for you. So here's baggy pants. But see how I. I didn't want to feel frumpy, so I have a boxy shirt. I showed a little bit of stomach. I just think it's so much more comfortable. I've been eating Malte and I'm feeling very confident. Anyways, that's my highlight. Thank you so much for coming to see me. I love you, hubby, so, so, so much. Let's all be Instagram friends and again, I'll see you tomorrow, hopefully. And thank you, Ashley, for having me. Love you.
Thank you so much. So I was in California for a conference a couple weeks ago and found out it's Kelly's hometown, which was such a small world. So one of the nights we got to just sit around and talk about fashion and that was a lot of fun.
So thank you for being who you are.
One thing she mentioned. Kelly, can you answer this? Did you catch her saying cash and carry? I feel like that question's been asked a lot in the hub. Can you talk about that?
Yes, actually, I would love to point a few things out. So most of our cash and carry is just in this hall. So it's something really exciting because you can walk away with a piece you left. So pool has a whole cash and carry section. All the smaller booths that are open with no walls and you can pick something up and walk away with it today. Great gift items. We also have an area called Canvas and Project Women's. A lot of gifts, candles. Also a lot of those vendors are offering cash and carry. And last but not least, for the first time ever, we launched a pop up with place showroom. Has some of our favorite brands from Australia and the US And a place Pop up is right at the front of Project Women's. If you're coming through the door near the dj, you make a right and and it says place Pop up. And you can try on, they have a dressing room and you can walk away with a really cute outfit for tonight for the club because I know you're all going to the club. But anyways, enjoy those little perks because it's so annoying when you're walking around seeing all these cute things and you actually can't walk away with something for yourself. So enjoy. Yeah. Any questions that you want me to answer regarding magic trends? Talking about work, life, balance. My husband's here. I have to try to balance it all. Can you say, hi, honey? Hey. I think that's where I relate with Ashley most. And I loved our night out is because we're both working mamas and trying to balance it all. And I think we're all such a support system for one another. And I know you talk about that a lot, so I love that any questions.
So one question I saw today in the Hub was asking about apparel for women with curves. Do you have any recommendations for.
For everyone who are looking for curvy pieces? Yeah, so we don't feel that that's something that we should call out in a section because curvy girls are like any other girls. So we're not going to put it all together for you. But there are probably about 3 to 400 brands here that have extended sizes. So the way you're going to do that is because we don't have a show guide anymore, like a big, chunky show guide. We're trying to be more size sustainable and stop wasting paper and getting everybody on this technology. So when you have that up on your phone, you'll look up plus plus, and all of a sudden all the companies that have plus sizes will come up and you can click on them and find their booth numbers and shop all them at once. Okay. So look it up in the app under Categories plus. You just entered in and you'll see all the couple hundred that we have across the entire show floor. Yeah. Anything else? If not, just DM me, email me. Love you all. Thank you. Yeah, appreciate it.
Can we have a round of applause for Kelly.
