Make A YouTube Short from Existing YouTube Video

Dotty Scott walks through converting a longer YouTube video into a Short using the Remix/Create tool. You'll learn how to select segments, adjust framing, add text and captions, then upload. Creating Shorts can drive viewers to your full-length videos.

So I want to show you how to edit a YouTube video that's on your YouTube channel and turn it into a short. So a short is YouTube's version of short-form video, and it's 60 seconds or less. If it's 61 seconds, it will not go into the Shorts stream. It will go into the regular stream. So this— these really are truly under 60-second videos. So I'm gonna go ahead and click my icon right here, and I'm gonna go to your channel. And again, you have to be logged in. You are the only one that can do this. So once you're on your channel, scroll and find the video that you are wanting to edit. And we're just gonna do this one right here. I'm gonna click on that, and I'm gonna hit the remix. It might say create there. Um, last week it said create, now it says remix. So we're going to edit into a short. Okay, and now you've got these white little bars here and you can choose what part of the video you want to edit. And I don't really want to work together my part, I want her her part.
I preach whether it's—
you can also move this whatever you're doing around so that it's centered the way you want it.
Get them to yes, but get people to know because—
and just kind of listen to what they're saying.
Noise over here.
You want to stop it, people who don't like mid-thought, so that they can want that because you're either going to incentivize to click through and hear the rest of the video. So you basically just mess with this here. You can choose, you can move it. Up, up and down. It's just the part that's in the white that is going to, um, actually be on your short. And you can drag this and make it shorter and choose where it's going to stop as well.
They're going to start saying negative things, and that's—
and I'm going to end this with 'and that,' so hopefully they'll click through. So then once you're all done figuring out what section of your video you're going to do Click next, and it's going to do its little processing thing. It doesn't really take very long, and it should come to a screen that lets us do a few other things.
Get people to know—
down here we can add text, and you can choose your colors, do whatever you want. I'm just going to, um, aren't going to work well with you. Why do you want that?
Because you're either going to end up clients and it's going to be like pulling teeth on both sides because you don't work well together. You're not the right people to work together, or they're just cluttering up your space and eventually they're going to start saying that. Then I'm going to click to the done. Don't just get them together and you can move this around to know because why do you—
I'm just going to stick it up here. And again, you can change the color, the background color, all of that. And you can add a filter.
Why do you want that? Because you're either going to end up—
I do know in other algorithms when you use filters, for whatever reason, YouTube will show it more often. So I always just put in a filter. I really don't think it matters which one, but let's try a black and white filter and let's just see what happens. So then we're almost done.
All this noise over here.
When you're all done, come up here and hit next. It would be super nice if they would standardize where they put all that stuff. Here you can caption. You've got 100 characters. Um, so I'm just going to put in here— spell correctly. Okay, and any hashtagging, anything like that you want to do, you would go ahead and do right here. You do not need to do hashtag Shorts. If you've heard that, you don't need to do that. Um, let's see, let's just put— I'm just going to put one in here for now. Business tip, business sales. Okay, I'm just going to do that. Um, you come down here and you can choose some other options. I leave my visibility to public, it's not kids. And then when you're all done, you hit Done and then Upload Short. And that's really all there is to it. So, um, you can now go ahead and create some Shorts out of your longer videos. And the reason you want to do that is because a lot of people are now watching YouTube Shorts and on their phones, and they're getting way more views than the standard horizontal long videos. Uh, now my views have gone up on my longer videos because I've taken a short out of each one and people click through. So that's a strategy, and, uh, good luck with that. Let me know how it works for you.
