YouTube SEO: How to Optimize Your Videos for More Views!

Dotty Scott walks through a custom GPT workflow for YouTube SEO. Learn how to optimize transcripts, generate SEO titles and keywords, write descriptions, create chapters with Descript, and design thumbnails and cards to boost video discovery.
Chapters
This is the YouTube custom GPT instructions. So let's dive in and see exactly what we need to do. So first thing I wanted to do is explain to you what we have going on here, because some of this stuff you can use, not all of it, or just some of it.
It's up to you.
So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to start by entering the video transcript. So if you're using a program like Descript or some other place, that is transcribing your video, you can just paste that in.
If you are using the free version that YouTube gives you, then all you need to do is copy that transcript and put it in here.
And that transcript isn't punctuated. There's not sentences, it's just words and it looks terrible. So that's why I put this first thing in here. We're gonna paste that transcript in and it's going to properly punctuate it, and then we're just gonna take it right back to YouTube. And overwrite what's there. So that's step 1. If you already have a punctuated transcript, it'll skip it, which is cool. Okay, then it goes into, then we're going to run this program. And it's saying we're a YouTube expert. I'm creating a YouTube video about, and you can put your topic in, which if you're putting your transcript in, really, you don't have to do that.
And I want to target the main keywords, uh, keyword 1, keyword 2. If you don't put your keywords in, it's going to simply tell you what keywords based on the transcript that you should be using.
This is only if you're really wanting to specifically target something. Otherwise, just forget that step. It doesn't need it.
It's going to generate 7 post titles and it's going to include the keyword naturally.
Between 40 and 60 characters long.
Create curiosity or promise value.
And match the video style. And also explain why each title would be effective. And if for some reason it doesn't do that, then you need to just prompt in there, "You forgot to gimme the titles," and it'll give 'em to you.
And then it's going to give you some researched keywords or hashtags for the video.
It's going to give you a description. It's gonna follow all these instructions I've put in here for the description and It's going to tell you what YouTube category is the best category for the video. It's going to give you an idea on YouTube cards, which you may or may not even be using. If you put in your channel link, it'll go to the channel and it'll give you actual links that you can click to in the video for like next videos coming up, good ideas for that. And so those are the instructions. Okay, so now let's look at how we actually use that. So the first thing I need to do is go find the video transcript, and I uploaded a video to YouTube. So I've uploaded this video right here. I haven't really filled all this out yet. I want to get the transcript. So we're going to come over here and we're just going to click subtitles. And if there aren't any subtitles here, that means your video hasn't been up long enough.
So let me show you this on a different video.
Okay, so here we are.
Here's the subtitles and you can see there's no sentences, there's no periods, punctuation, there's no capitalization, anything like that.
So we're just going to copy this onto the clipboard and I'm gonna leave that there. And then I wanna come back over to my ChatGPT and all I'm gonna do is I'm gonna paste this in. And I'll put it in quotation marks. Thanks for the transcript. Here it's giving me my 7 potential titles, telling me why they think it's a good thing. And it skipped the punctuate. So when this is all done, we're going to go back and we're going to say, hey, you skipped punctuating the transcript. Sometimes you have to remind it to do that.
Here's some keywords that we can use, giving us a video description.
These chapters that it comes with, never use. The timing's always wrong on them. I put that in there to remind you, if you have access to a tool that's giving you those timestamps, that to replace them with the real ones. And I'll show you where I get those in just a minute. Okay. So I'm just going to put in here, please punctuate the transcript. And the reason I do this is because if someone's using closed captions, I want them to actually see sentences, not just a bunch of words thrown together. It just makes it easier to read.
And then I'm just going to copy these and I'm going to paste over the ones that are in there and hit save.
And then I just take out the paragraph breaks because they're not needed in this. There we go. And click done. So now that's saved the transcript. So now we're going to come back over here and you can see I've already done this one. But so I'm just going to walk you through it. Okay. So let's come back up to the top. So the 7 potential titles that it came up with this round, you just read through these and pick out one that you resonate with and that you agree with the why. And you just simply copy that and paste it into your title area for YouTube. Now what you don't want to do is put, uh, repeat whatever is on your thumbnail, or you don't want to have on your thumbnail this title, because when the video is not being watched, the title displays, and there's no point in having the same thing on the thumbnail. So pick out a title that you like.
Come down here to the video description.
Now, of course, don't copy in hook, don't copy in overview. We're gonna leave the chapters out. So on this, we would do this one line, this first line, copy and paste. Then I would do that paragraph right there, copy and paste. Detailed description, again, I'm gonna leave that off. Just put in here, down to here, copy and paste. And then what I use is Descript. And in Descript, it gives me the actual timings of the video as part of that program. So I would then go to Descript, copy the actual timings and put 'em here and replace these. Again, these are 100% wrong. The time doesn't even usually match up with how long the video is. Make sure you don't use these. And they are chapters. You can leave that there if you want. And what this does is it creates the little, um, lines down in your timeline at the specific sections or minutes and seconds of the video. And when you hover over those, if you've ever noticed, a string of words pop up. That's these words. So you want these words to try to use your keywords because this actually helps you get ranked or get the video ranked in Google's search results.
This is actually a super important SEO piece of the description.
If you want to put in a call to action, go ahead and do that again. Don't copy CTA, just put the call to action in there. If you want to link to other videos, link to different things that you've put into the video that you've said you're going to link to, then make sure that you insert the links here. Here's your hashtags.
Here it's telling us the best category for this particular video is how-to and style.
Now I actually uploaded in a PDF all of the YouTube categories with their descriptions of the types of videos that are in there. Which is how this is choosing the category for whatever video you're using. Giving us some YouTube card ideas. Here's thumbnail ideas. You could come in here and actually just say, hey, would you go ahead and create that thumbnail so I can take a look at it? I personally don't really like how ChatGPT and DALL-E mix and come up with thumbnails. The words are usually spelled wrong and it just usually doesn't look good. I personally use Midjourney, but however you're going to create your thumbnail, it's given you an idea of something that's going to be described for the thumbnail. And this is just extra did you know information. It's not meant to go into your video. If you read it and you think, ah, that would be interesting to put in the description. Go ahead and drop it into the description. It's like a did you know? And in this particular one, studies show that adding timestamps in your video descriptions can improve engagement, increase your views. Now, I would only put that in if I was doing a video on how to optimize a YouTube description. Putting that into this video really wouldn't make a whole lot of sense.. And it's just your own edification. So there's, this is how this works. I'm trying to educate you on how to do it correctly, giving you interesting things to think about. And yeah, that's how simple it is. So if we come back over to our YouTube, I ran this program. I went ahead and picked a title out, picked out what I want for the description. It created these emojis. You can keep 'em or leave 'em. It's up to you. These timestamps again, actually came from Descript. Here's the different hashtags that it gave me. This particular one I didn't want. It's actually gonna be a private video, so the thumbnail is pretty irrelevant. But you could upload your thumbnail that you create right here. Select your playlist if it's going on a playlist. This particular one is not, uh, and just fill out the rest of the YouTube area here and go ahead and publish it. So that's how you use the YouTube description, YouTube SEO custom GPT that I have given you access to.
