Mike Lyons traces Agile from its origins through the Manifesto's four values and twelve principles, then shows how it spread beyond software into HR, marketing, and strategy. Agile is a mindset, not a destination.
Chapters
Well, hi there. Welcome to Chapter 1, Agile History and Background. We're excited to cover a number of different lessons with you, including talking about what Agile is and importantly what agile is not. Maybe you work in an organization and someone has said, we need to be more agile, let's get Agile. Like, what does that even mean? How do you do that? So we'll unpack that together. We'll also talk about the origins of Agile, sort of, where did this come from? How did this come about? And what we'll discover is that Agile really isn't anything new now. It's been around for quite a while and probably you're even doing some of these agile practices within your own life and maybe, maybe you didn't even realize it. We'll introduce you to the agile manifesto. There's four values and 12 principles behind the Agile Manifesto. And we'll talk about how it really influences the way we develop software and develop solutions today. Speaking of software and solutions, did you know that Agile is used throughout organizations, not just in it? It's not just an IT thing now it can be used across lean enterprises for things like Agile human resources or Agile marketing, Agile strategy, and heck, not just within IT companies either. We'll talk about how agile practices are used in companies that don't produce software. You might be surprised at some of those. We'll also talk about how Agile is more of a mindset, an approach, than it is a set of, you know, defined practices and tools. Oh, there's practices and tools, but that's not all it is. It's a mindset. It's a way of thinking, like, how do we approach work and think about work? And then we'll conclude with a final lesson on talking about Agile as a journey, really. You know, myself, my peers, we've been in this industry for a while, decades in fact, and none of us would really say we've arrived. We've kind of figured it all out. We haven't. We're learning and growing and getting smarter every day. Agile really is about a journey and we're excited to be with you on your journey. And as a part of that, let's go ahead and jump into our first lesson.
