We'll dive into what it means to find your why and share practical strategies for keeping it front and center so it can continue to inspire and energize you no matter what storms you might weather. Because at the end of the day, your why is what will help you stay the course, overcome setbacks, and ultimately achieve the success and fulfillment that you are striving for when you started out your agency. So, lots to cover, super important topic and let's get started. I'm Rob Da Costa and this is the Agency Accelerator Podcast. As as someone who has stood in your shoes, having started, grown and sold my own agency, I know just how it feels in the ups and downs of agency life. So this podcast aims to ease your journey just a little by sharing mine and my guests experiences and advice as you navigate your way to growing a profitable, sustainable and enjoyable business. We were discussing the importance of your why in my self running Agency Group Coaching call this week where once a quarter we get together to work on our plans, working on our Q3 plans. And it was a good reminder to stop, to put the pause button on to take stock, to get refocused before you start getting super busy again. But of course, before we can stay connected to our why, we first need to understand what it really means at its core. Your why is a combination of your long term vision, your passion and your core values. Your vision is the future state that you're working towards, your road map and your compass of where you're headed. It's those big audacious goals that you fired up and motivated. Whatever your vision, it acts as a guiding star, illuminating the path forwards and it reminds you of where you ultimately want to go. But a vision alone isn't enough. It needs to be grounded in your core values. These are your fundamental beliefs and principles that shape who you are and how you show up in the world. Your values act as a moral compass, helping you make tough decisions and steering you away from choices that might compromise your integrity. Maybe fun is one of your core values, as it was for one of our group members, and maybe that is alongside excellence, creativity or compassion. These are non negotiable, the lines that you won't cross, no matter how tempting or convenient it might seem in the moment. You use your values to find the best staff and the most aligned clients. When you follow your passion and when your vision and values are aligned, that's when you've tapped into your true why. It's the combination of where you want to go and how you want to get there. The destination and the journey rolled into one, if you like. With a clear understanding of your why, you'll be better equipped to stay connected to it, even when the road gets bumpy. Because let's face it, every agency and every individual faces challenges and setbacks along the way. But when you know your why, you'll have the resilience and determination to push through those tough times and keep moving forwards. Okay, so now we understand what the why is and why it's so important. The next question is, how do you actually find yours? Uncovering your true why takes some deep self reflection and soul searching, but it's an incredibly valuable exercise that can provide clarity and purpose to your work and your life, keep you focused and keep you motivated. So the first step is to reflect on your passion and your purpose. Ask yourself what drives you, what gets you excited to jump out of bed in the morning and get your day started, what kind of impact you want to have on the world around you. And and your why should tap into something that stirs your soul and makes you feel fulfilled. Once you've explored your passion, it's time to identify your core values. These are the non negotiable principles that guide your decisions and behaviors. So make a list of the values that are most important to you. Things like excellence, creativity, compassion, family, community, and so on. Then prioritize that list and narrow it down, ideally to three core values. You then need to define the daily behaviors that sit behind those values to ensure that they are lived by you and your team every single day. This will become the foundation of your why. With your passion and values as a starting point, you can then envision your longer term goals and the future that you want to create. Where do you want your agency to be in one year, three years or five years from now? This is really important work that we all start with in my program to get get that clarity on your longer term vision and then we revisit it quarterly. Because without a clear roadmap, there is a good chance that you'll go round in circles or be directed by external factors. And trust me, that is not fun. As you're exploring these questions, don't censor yourself. Dream big and allow yourself to get excited about the possibilities. At the same time, be honest with yourself about what truly matters most to you. The intersection of your passion, values and longer term vision is where your will find your authentic why. It might take some time and introspection to fully uncover this, but once you do, you'll have a powerful driving force that can guide your decisions and keep you motivated even when times are tough. Your why should evolve as you grow and change, but at its core, it should remain a constant touchstone that you can return to time and time again for inspiration, direction and focus. Remember, finding your why isn't a one and done exercise. It's an ongoing journey of self discovery and exploration. But it's a journey well worth taking because when you're truly connected to your why, you'll have an unshakable foundation that can help you navigate any obstacle or challenge that comes your way. It's also worth saying that even if you're a one person agency, then this work is vital to keep you focused and motivated and will serve you really well as you grow. Now that we've explored what it means to find your why, let's talk about why it's so powerful. Especially when you're facing difficult times or you're going through a rough patch and perhaps wondering why do you do what you do? Your why serves as a guiding light, a constant source of motivation and inspiration that can help you stay the course even when the path ahead seems uncertain or challenging. It's the reason you keep going, the fuel that sustains you through the inevitable ups and downs of running an agency. Your WHY all provides resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks and disappointments because you know what you're working towards is bigger than any any single failure or roadblock. It gives you the strength to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward with renewed determination. Your why also offers focus and clarity, helping you cut through the noise and distractions that can so easily derail us. When you're clear on your purpose and your values, it becomes much easier to make tough decisions, prioritize what's truly important, and stay laser focused on your goals. So if you're going through a tough time right now or facing obstacles that seem insurmountable, come back to your why. Remind yourself of your vision that you're working towards and the values that guide your actions. Because when you stay connected to your why, you'll have an unshakable foundation that can help you weather any storm and emerge even stronger on the other side. So listen, I know this is all very well, but how do you actually go about staying connected to your why on a practical day to day basis? So let me share with you three key strategies to help you keep your why front and center. First of all, make a habit of regularly revisiting your why. It's really easy to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of the bigger picture, so you need to be intentional about circling back to your vision and your values. So schedule regular check ins. I would say do this every single month and make sure you've documented this in the program. We use this really simple three page vision template which captures all this information, but you need to be checking on that every single month. And during these check ins reflect on how your recent actions and decisions have aligned with your why. Make sure you celebrate the wins as well, but also look for areas where you may have gotten off track and use these intentional moments to course correct and realign yourself with your purpose and your documented vision. And of course, when you do that, you should also be willing to change your vision as well based on what you know today that you didn't know last time you checked your vision. Now if you've got a team, involve them in this process as well. Certainly a leadership team, open discussions about the company's why and how everybody's individual contributions are tied to that greater mission are super important and they will foster a culture of accountability and ensure that your why remains top of mind for everybody. The second strategy is to communicate your why. This is like an obvious one, but communicate it both internally and externally. So share your vision and your values with your team. In fact, get them involved in creating the values and where appropriate, share that with clients and stakeholders as well. Let them know what drives you and what your agency is working towards and why it matters. Communicating your why serves two important purposes. First of all, it helps it to enforce and solidify your own connection to the purpose. The more you articulate and share your why, the more deeply ingrained it becomes with you, and secondly, invites other people to hold you to account and for them to be accountable as well. When you've publicly declared your why, you'll have a whole community of people who can gently nudge you back on track and support you even if you start to stray away from the path. Finally, make a point to celebrate your wins and your milestones, both big and small, that exemplify your why in action. Did you recently make a tough decision that upheld one of your core values? Celebrate that as a team. Did you achieve a key goal that moved you closer to your vision? Well, mark that accomplishment and reflect on how it aligns with your greater purpose. These celebrations don't have to be elaborate. Even a simple acknowledgment or a symbolic gesture can go a long way towards reinforcing the importance of why. And at the end of the day, it's really important that we just stop and take stock and celebrate and not just focus on what we haven't done. Your why is your anchor in the storm, the guiding star that will help you navigate even through the roughest of seas. So keep it close, review it regularly, nurture it, and let it be a force that propels you forward on your journey. So I hope this short podcast episode has at least got you thinking. Maybe you need to reconnect with your why. Maybe you actually need to sit down and work on your values and your vision. Or maybe you've got this nailed and this is just a timely reminder, so I'll leave you with this. Take some time to reflect on your own why. Rediscover that driving sense of purpose that first inspired you to embark on your agency journey. Reconnect with your vision that you have for your future and your values that guide your path, and then use your why as your North Star and let it propel you forward with renewed passion and determination. Remember, there are always things getting in our road. Roadblocks and twists and turn and ups and downs. But when you stay connected with your why, you'll have an unshakable foundation to fall back on, and a constant reminder of why you do what you do, why you started your agency, and ultimately, what lies ahead.
