Ishan Shivanand shares a parable about two birds on a tree: one calm and content on the higher branch, the other anxious and restless below. The tree represents the mind, and yoga's practices lift consciousness from agitation to peace.

The ascended master would tell me stories at night. Two birds sit on a tree, one on a higher branch, one on a lower branch. The bird that sits on the higher branch is calm, relaxed, content, peaceful. And the bird that sits on the lower branch is agitated, flying from branch to branch, not knowing its purpose. And the ascended master said, This tree represents your mind. The lower bird represents your consciousness without yoga, and the higher bird represents your consciousness after practicing yoga. Without yoga, without meditation, we are agitated. But once we start practicing the beautiful protocols of yoga, our consciousness rises, our perspective changes, we become much more resilient.
