It was supposed to be a normal night. Ryan, a high school track star recovering from injury, decided to jog through the quiet streets of Ryebrook. As he passed the old, abandoned McGregor Mansion, his phone buzzed with an alert. "Missing person in the area. Male, 16 years old." Chills ran down his spine as he realized the description matched his friend, Jake, who'd vanished after a run yesterday. Curiosity tugged at him, and he found himself creeping toward the mansion's creaking door. Inside, the air was thick with decay and something worseāa whispering darkness. His phone's flashlight flickered, revealing cryptic symbols smeared in crimson on the walls. Panic surged through him, but he pressed on, Jake's fate driving him. Ryan heard a faint, desperate moan from the basement. He rushed down, heart pounding, and found Jake chained to the wall, eyes wide with terror. Before Ryan could react, the door slammed shut behind him. A cold, cruel voice echoed in the darkness. "Welcome, new runner! Your turn to join the race." Suddenly, the chains around Jake vanished, and the walls began to close in, the room shrinking rapidly. They sprinted up the stairs, but the mansion twisted, turning corridors into mazes. Ryan's lungs burned, legs screamed, but he couldn't stop. The door loomed ahead, a beacon of escape. Just as they reached it, a shadowy figure blocked their path. Ryan swung his flashlight, the beam slicing through the dark to revealāhimself. Eyes void and mouth twisted in a sinister grin. "You can't outrun yourself," it whispered. The light went out.
