Hey.
Thank you everybody. Thanks for being here today. Today I'm going to be talking to you about Quip, but more importantly, I'm going to be talking to you how Quip can fuel a culture of action inside of your company. How a culture of action is a culture that empowers your employees to get things done and to cut through the noise of the everyday things that might hold them back from succeeding. Before I get started though, first I want to say thank you. Really, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank all of you for being here today. When I founded Quip six years ago, I really don't think I could have predicted how far we would have come that I would be here today or that I would have the privilege to talk to all of you. In the past year, as a CEO, it's been so energizing to me to talk to other CIOs, CEOs, users, everyone who's invested time in the product, and all of you here. So really, thank you for your time and your interest. It really means the world to me. Now as I get started in the keynote, and I know that this may not be, for many of you, the first Dreamforce keynote you've seen before. It may not be your first Dreamforce keynote this week. You're probably familiar with our customer success platform. I hope so. Salesforce does such a good job of always bringing it back to the customer.
Today.
I want to talk about something, though. That's the heart of every customer interaction you have, and that's your employees. Your employees are behind every single interaction you have and are at the core of your business being successful. But the expectations of employees have changed. The workforce that I joined 20 years ago is not the same as the workforce people join today. Employees now want to have an impact. They want to connect their work to things that the company cares about. They want to work socially, not hierarchically trapped in a private office. And they want to have a sense of purpose. They want to know why their work matters. Unfortunately, though, what I've seen is that despite our best efforts, our company culture can get in the way. Our employees are often spending their time not getting actual work done, not taking action, but wading through a thicket of emails, getting trapped in a hundred Email, long attachment, having trouble actually just getting things done in your company? They get demotivated, they're not energized, they're not engaged. Well, solving this problem, making this maze better, that is my mission. That is Quip's mission. At its heart, we are trying to create a culture of action inside of companies, inside of your company, so that your employees do feel empowered, they do feel energized, they do feel engaged to actually get through every action, get through everything they need to do. And what I've learned over the past few years while working on this is there's a few parts of the recipe that's necessary for people to feel engaged, for them to feel empowered. I know that work today is collaborative. We don't work inside of a closed off office. The best ideas come when transparency wins and when the best ideas float to the top. I also know that communication is modern in today's workplaces. We don't rely on the same old way of talking. I'm curious for you guys in the audience, how many of you have ever texted with your boss before? How many of you guys use texting at work? How many of you have texted your boss in the past week? It happens. It happens. Most of the audience, hands up. Because the communication world is changing too. The other thing I've seen is that for people to succeed in companies, they want everything to be connected. They want the data that they use to make decisions to be at their fingertips, to be in the applications they use so they don't have to keep switching between eight different tabs to get things done. Well, all of that, all of that. My answer to all of that is Quip. That's what I work on, and that's what we build. Quip is a collaboration suite that tries to fuel a culture of action through our documents, our spreadsheets, through interactive chat, through live applications that pull your world in. The coolest part, though, is that we work with a lot of companies of all different sizes. And it works. You know, the way I judge Quip's success is not through how many customers we have or how much revenue we make. It's through how my customers actually succeed, how they become more productive. And the way that we track that is we ask them. We do surveys and we ask them, how has your life changed after quip? The answers speak for themselves. They tell us that their projects have shipped 37% faster, that they have 43% less internal email, that they've had 38% fewer meetings. All of this, all of this is how we're actually empowering employees to be more successful, to take action back. But if you've been with Quip for the past five years or so, the cool part is it just keeps getting better. We keep launching more and more on the platform. You know, I think if you started using quip in 2013, I'm not sure if you'd recognize it today. We've added spreadsheets, we parallelized the we created the term of living documents, we added live apps, new deployment options, we just redid our search. In the past week, we added a bunch of features. In the past week, there's a bunch of cool things we launched. There was one really cool visual feature. People have been talking about it. It's skipping my mind right now. Maybe you guys can roll the film.
Turns out that most presentations don't actually make it to the glory of the big stage. Instead, they're used to lead strategic meetings at work. But we spend more time aligning text boxes, weeding through emails, and decoding changes in Finalv39 RMS PPTX than we do actually building alignment and making decisions. So what if slides were built for teamwork instead of meet quipslides here to get your team to the right decision faster. And without file versions, every slide is automatically up to date. Real time co editing and built in chat make collaboration seamless and requesting feedback is as easy as an ention. Forget manual updates or copy and paste. Add live data from any app like Salesforce to power Insights with the latest information. Keep momentum rolling from any device anyone can chime in as easily as a text message. When you're done, share your slides early and let interactive prompts do the rest. Yeah, you can go ahead and cancel tomorrow's meeting. Build your next presentation with Quip slides where decisions are made, teammates are aligned, and everyone can take action in Quip.
Pretty exciting, right? You know, Slides, which we just launched, has really been a labor of love for me and the entire engineering team. The chance to add something this rich, this visual, this interactive to Quip has been a real privilege. My favorite thing about it though is that with Quip slides, we're trying to do something different. We're not focusing on creating a slide deck for a big keynote presentation like this one. We're focusing on making a slide deck for the work that you do every week, for the actual problems you encounter. We wanted to make something that was social, that was collaborative. We wanted to make it easy for you when you're working on a slide deck, to get feedback in real time. We wanted to make it possible for you to ask a question in the slide deck and to get it answered without having to even have the meaning. That's how you get time back and that's how we hope to help the 78% of presentations that never see the big stage. You're going to get a chance to see a little bit more of this later as we demo how one of our customers is using it. But for me, the coolest part about quipslides isn't even how visual it is, isn't even how fun it is to use. It's that it's built on our platform, the Quip collaboration platform. When we added slides, it meant that it automatically got everything else that our users rely upon and that our IT teams love. Things like our mobile desktop applications, things like our member management and access control, our search and discovery tools, our automation API, even deployment options, both on the public cloud and our virtual private cloud option. Because I think if you're an IT leader, if you're a company, you shouldn't have to choose. You shouldn't have to choose between the best of breed consumer applications that the employees at your company want and the IT control that you need. With Quip, you don't have to now the platform keeps growing. We have millions of users using the product, millions of documents being created, millions of interactions that are happening every single day. And what's more, this platform isn't just for us. Our partners are building on the platform. The applications that they build get all of these benefits as well. Things from Box, Dropbox, IBM, Watson, Google Drive and Micro Focus, they all have those same benefits. Micro Focus is a really interesting example. They're a customer of ours that have relied upon Quip, but they also recently extended the Quip platform with the Live app for ALM Octane, their flagship application lifecycle management product. With that, both their customers and they internally win. Another one of our partners, though, and perhaps my favorite, is Box. Box is leading the industry in storage and collaboration and it's a company that so many of our customers rely upon. It's an amazing product and it's really helping to move people forward. I have the privilege to have here today the chance to show you how with the Box Live app, they're able to actually add a folder, add files and collaborate on your Box content directly inside of quip. So I'd love, and it's a real privilege for me to bring onto stage Jeetu Patel. He's the Chief Product Officer of Box, so we can both talk a Little bit about how we see this going. Jeetu.
How are you?
Kevin.
Hey, thanks for coming today.
Thanks for having us.
Thank you for calling us one of your favorite partners. Good. Be really awkward if you said this is one of my least favorite partners I'm going to have on stage.
Well, I appreciate it. Would you mind telling folks a little bit more about Box for those who haven't used it or don't know about it?
Sure. How many over here are Box users in the show of hands? All right, that's impressive. So thank you again for being customers. So we are a cloud content management platform, and our mission in life is to fundamentally help organizations work more effectively with unstructured content. And so we've been around for 13 years, 60 million users, 87,000 customers, and, you know, 69% of the Fortune 500. So we're trying to really fundamentally change the way that people work, because it's been really unproductive for the past decade and a half. And it'd be nice to kind of have a completely different way to innovate. Be agile, be transparent in the way that cultures change within organizations.
That's incredibly impressive. Now, I know we've talked a lot about the power of the platform, how platforms are really helping. Could you tell me a little bit more how you think about platforms?
So the way I think about platform is it is probably one of the most central indicators of humility of a company when they actually have an investment in a platform. Because what it says is the collective power of the ecosystem for going out and solving a customer's problem is far more important than any individual's agenda. And what we're doing is we're opening up our application to others to go out and integrate with. And I think there's two worlds that are gonna be. There'll be one or two worlds that'll persist in the future. There'll either be a world that says you're gonna buy everything from a single vendor and a single stack, and you're gonna optimize for the least common denominator. Or in the cloud, we've got this advantage of saying, let's make sure that we buy a ecosystem of modern tools that are gonna work together. And, you know, one of the things we talk about with our customers is if you show me your IT stack, I will tell you what your culture looks like, because your IT stack is very indicative of your culture. If you actually have a legacy set of systems, chances are you're not gonna be transparent. If you have a culture that people are gonna be hoarding information because they can't share and collaborate with it effectively. It's just not gonna be something that you're gonna be the most innovative agile company in the world. So I think platform's central to those components.
I think it's absolutely true. You know, I really think when you have a platform like Box does, like quip does, customers win. They get the best of breed experience, they get to have whatever they need.
And our thinking over there is that you start from the customer need and work backwards. And this is what we love working with you folks about is if you just maniacally obsess on the customer needs, things fall in place. But if you try to go out and get too cute about business models and what's your control point? What's our control point? Things don't really serve the customer well.
So absolutely.
Hey.
Well, thank you so much for being here today.
Thanks so much.
Really appreciate it.
Take care. Yeah, thank you. Take care.
Well, folks, now I'm done talking about quit. I want to talk about something that's more important. When I started the presentation today, I told you that I would be talking about how you can create a culture of action. I'm so lucky to have here today three trailblazing customers that are really leading the world in their different industries. I want to have them here today to talk about how they have each of their own individual cultures of action, how they have been able to make their company so successful by empowering employees. The first one is Amazon. It's almost hard to think of an industry that Amazon hasn't transformed from how we have things shipped to our home, how we buy things, how we develop web services, how my three year old sets timers off in the kitchen every morning. Amazon is an amazing trailblazer. And what's been so cool about working with them is to learn a little bit more about how their culture and their bias for action has made them successful. They use quip and they use quip over the whole company. I'd love to show you a film about how they've been using it. Can you build a thumb.
If you're a fly on the wall? What you'll find across all parts of Amazon is we're relentless in our focus to improve the customer experience.
We're a customer obsessed company. It's what drives everything that we do.
It's what drives innovation, it's what drives all of us.
It's all about the details. You need to have all the information flowing. You need to be able to review that information in a timely fashion and have the information be accurate up to date and reflect the opinions and feedback of your employees and your custom.
The way that we do that, we have a working backwards process where we write a narrative that deeply analyzes the business problem, proposes solutions, and then we have a meeting where we spend time discussing that proposal. But as far as the processes, tooling mechanisms, we kind of use the traditional approach. We wrote a document, sent it out over email, wait for feedback. We try to gather that, integrate that back in. It's cumbersome, very time consuming.
Keeping track of what was the latest version became challenging as the team grew and more people needed to have their fingerprints on something.
So if you're going to adopt this narrative process, you want to give employees the tools so they can edit one live document instead of emailing them around.
Quip enables us to do exactly that.
Quip's a collaboration platform that's allowed our team to work effectively together across time zones. They can review it, they can contribute, they can provide feedback, and we can incorporate it.
Bias fraction is one of our biggest, most important leadership principles. And Quip has been a great place platform for us to do that at a massive scale and move quickly.
It enables us, in a kind of multimodal way to capture all of that input, think through that input, discuss that input, edit it real time as a group and make people more effective in their jobs.
It makes for a much more cohesive organization.
It's like going from a horse drawn carriage to a, you know, Bugatti Veyron. It's just faster and easier.
Quip is many things. It's very rich in functionality. So having Quip over the last couple years, that is worth its weight in gold.
Amazon and Salesforce have had a great partnership for many years now, and a lot of it comes down to shared values around customer success. We'll get great results for our company and we'll get great products for our customers. If we start from the customer and work backwards, it's just a better way to work.
Well, folks, it's my distinct pleasure to welcome to the stage Ariel Kelman, who's a VP of Worldwide marketing and Amazon Web Services, to talk a little bit more about how Amazon has this culture of action.
Ariel.
Hi.
Thanks for having me.
Thank you for being here today. And thank you for comparing Quip favorably to a Bugatti sports car.
I try. Metaphors are important in marketing.
Wow.
You know, one thing I don't know that everyone in the audience knows is how closely Salesforce and Amazon have worked Together, you know, through Amazon Web Services, it's providing hosting for many of our clouds, including Quip. And it's also helping us internationally and helping us so much in the way we grow our business. You guys are a real partner to everything that we do.
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, it's been a natural partnership for a long time because I think the companies share a lot of values, both technically in terms of just believing from day one that doing things in the cloud was better and easier for customers. And I think from a values perspective of really deeply embedding what we call customer obsession, what you talk about as customer success just in the heart of everything that you do.
You know, one thing I'd love to ask more about is to learn a little bit more about your culture. You know, I've been fascinated by it and the video was really cool. Could you share a little more about Amazon?
There is a couple things. I mean, just for those in the audience, you can just go on the web, just search for Amazon Leadership Principles. We actually have it written down. And, you know, some of the things I think are most important, in addition to Customer obsession is diving deep. We really care about the details and about getting them right. And it's, you know, we feel like if we're going to be able to innovate and be able to iterate with customers, it's all about the details. And so for us, documents end up being a pretty important part of life at Amazon.
Well, that's really cool. That makes a lot of sense in the culture, in those details. And you mentioned documents. Could you talk about how Quip has had an impact on that culture?
Sure, absolutely. And in addition to helping us get the details right in the documents, I'll sort of bring up another one of our cultural values, or we call leadership principles, which is bias for action. We like doing things fast. So the old way of working, of taking documents, emailing them back and forth, the just maddening aggravation of having spent an hour on something when it's the wrong version. Forget about that. Once we started using live documents, using Quip, it's just so much better. We could have people collaborate in real time and iterate with people on revving these documents. And so much easier because we're also very collaborative. We're a flat organization. We like to get feedback on what we're doing from everyone. So this gives us a platform to really share ideas and then empower everyone in the company or large amounts of people in the company to be able to collaborate, to make those ideas even Better.
That's amazing. Now, is there any other way that QUIP has impacted you or impacted the way that you're working every day?
I think it's lowered my blood pressure knowing that I have the right version. It's like, you know, let's sort of say you want to have a database of truth for something. Something where you say, this is the real thing. This is where you go for the latest information. And being able to collaborate on that is useful. We had this project where we were trying to look at our product marketing organization to say, well, is this organized in the right way? Should we make it more decentralized? Should we align more on solutions that cross products or hardline with products? And so we wanted about 40 people collaborating on this, and we hashed it out live in the document, and any given time, I could look at it and see where we are. I could comment, make changes, and it provided that collaboration platform that let us come up with a new org design that could kind of help us efficiently scale.
Wow. Well, that's amazing. Before you go, I wanted to ask one other thing. The narrative documents. I've heard about the narratives that Amazon works on. You know, I'm a productivity nerd. Those sound so cool. I've heard that anyone at the company can write one of these. Is this true?
Yeah, absolutely. It's really how we share ideas. We don't do a lot of presentations internally. If people write the details out in documents, and then that can be shared with anyone who's interested. And so we really believe in a meritocracy of ideas.
So does that mean anyone, even, like, a junior employee, Anyone? No idea is too crazy.
No idea is too crazy. A lot of the things we do today were thought of as crazy ideas five years ago.
Okay, well, let's put a pin in that. I come back to it. But thank you so much for being here. I appreciate it. Now, guys, I'd like to welcome onto the stage Rena Fried Chung, who is our customer success manager here at Quip. And also a brilliant idea. Haver has something she'd like to share with you. Reena.
Hi, kevin.
Thanks so much.
Thank you.
Thank you all so much. It's a pleasure to be here with you. How amazing was that Amazon Trailblazer video, right? I know. I've been working with Amazon for over a year now, and yet every time I hear that story about how they scale and their growth, I'm still so impressed. The fact that QUIP has played even a small role in that, well, it's just incredibly Humbling to all of us. Now, I want to show you one of those narratives that we just heard so much about. Amazon uses Quip in a ton of different ways. But I want to show you one example of how they take a really innovative idea and drive it into action using Quip. First, though, I'm not sure how much all of you know about data centers, but it's important that they're in a really remote, secure and dry location. And now, Ariel, I mean, he knows a ton about data centers. Amazon has data centers all across the United States and actually all across the world. But do you know where Amazon doesn't have any data centers?
No.
The Moon. That's right, folks, my big idea is to put the next AWS data center region on the Moon. And now, I know this seems like a big idea, but I think we can all agree that if anyone can do it, I mean, it's Amazon. So let's actually take a closer look at our Quip document. Now, this is my narrative. It's a structured memo that outlines exactly why I believe the Moon has so much growth potential as the next AWS region. You can also see that my doc is more than just words on the page. As I scroll here, you can see a chart and a map. It's also really easy to insert a fully functioning spreadsheet. You can add and edit a block of text and the formatting. It's really simple, and that's intentional. First and foremost, we want you to focus on the words on the page. Secondly, we not only want you to be able to read this document wherever you are, but we also want you to be able to edit it on your phone, on your tablet, and wherever you are on the go. Now, at Amazon, great ideas don't come from a single person. They come from teams that iterate together over time. So that's why I've invited my team into this Quip document. Here you can see they're actually editing and collaborating on the document at the same time. Now, so many of our customers, they had no way to do this. Before Quip, they would email documents back and forth, and inevitably, comments would contradict each other. Versions would get lost, and they would spend countless hours just managing the document instead of actually working on the ideas and the content. With Quip, though, it's really easy to edit and comment right in line. You can jump in and respond to your colleagues in real time, and with the click of the like button, you can give an approval. Now, people come to me and they ask me, they say, rena, what is it about Quip that makes teams so successful? And I always tell them the same thing. It's that Quip puts collaboration at the center of productivity. And we do that by having a conversation pane next to every single document, spreadsheet and slide stack. Here you can see people are jumping right in at Amazon. The teams are actually really globally dispersed and so they use this conversation pane to provide status updates and to hand off work. Tons of their teams have actually eliminated daily standups and syncs because they're relying on this conversation pane here. Now you can see that my team is hard at work and they're doing an awesome job, but I have a full day ahead of me on site with a client, so I'm actually going to close my laptop now. Like many of you, though, there's so many days where I'm actually on my phone more than I'm on my laptop. Which is why I love the Quip mobile app. Here you can see I just got a push notification from one of my colleagues. It looks like the dock is ready to go. Now, with one click, I'm not only going to get into the Quip mobile app, I'm going to be in the exact place in my narrative where I've been mentioned. Here the team wants me to take a final read through and again, I'm going to scroll through my narrative. Here you're seeing the map, the spreadsheet, the chart above. It all looks great on your phone and not only is it easy to read, but you can jump in and you can make edits and updates and to any part of the document. Now, my team has done an awesome job though, so there's no need for me to jump in and make edits. I'm going to thank them for their hard work and tell them it's time to ship it. Thank you so much, everyone. Ariel, I can't wait to connect with you after the keynote to hear what you think. Thanks.
Thank you, Reno. I think that is a stellar idea and I suspect everyone's over the moon for your idea in the Amazon side. Well, I'd like to take you back to the culture of action and the three customers that we're talking about today. The second one that I want to talk about is Amgen. Amgen is a world leader in pharmaceuticals that's on a very important mission. They're trying to cure cancer and so many of the diseases that we face in the world today. And Amgen has their own culture of action that's oriented around speed and you know, it's such a privilege to work with Amgen because their mission is so important. For them, speed matters. Every day that they can get a drug to market faster, to make it available to patients faster literally translates to save lives. So I'd love to bring onto the stage Logan Randolph to talk a little bit more about Amgen and how they are using Quip plus Salesforce to solve these problems. Logan?
Thank you, Kevin. I'm really excited to be here and tell the Amgen story. The truth is, Amgen are trailblazers. For 38 years now, they've spent all their energy focusing on creating the most innovative drugs and getting them to the people who need them most. And a critical part of this, I've learned, is speed. In Amgen's case, speed means saving lives. It means alleviating suffering. So what I want to show you today is how companies like Amgen can take advantage of deep integrations between Quip and Salesforce to help them achieve this goal of speed. So for the demo, I'm gonna be someone on the sales team at Amgen, and I'm gonna be coming to an agreement with a hospital group called the Whitney Hospital Group. And of course, I'm gonna use Quip and Salesforce together. How many people here are Salesforce users? Silly question perhaps in this genre or in this venue, but of course, it's fundamentally the best way to manage my relationship with my customer, to track structured data around this account, and to deliver customer success. However, I will guiltily admit that it's not uncommon for sometimes, every once in a while, information to end up outside of my single source of truth. And I'll give you an example. I just had a meeting scheduled for about 36 hours from now, and I need to scramble to prepare. I need to get input from my team. So on this tight timeline, what do I do? I send a text to my boss. I might send an email to my co workers. I might set up a meeting to brief my executives. And there's really two big problems with this workflow. First of all, now I have critical information and context that lives outside of my single source of truth. And the second problem is these are just slow ways of working. I'm waiting for people to respond to my email or respond to my text. I am waiting for that meeting. I'm jumping back and forth frantically between three or four different tools. What I want to show you is that there is such a better way. In fact, I can do it without leaving my home. As a salesperson, I can do it without Leaving this very view. I can do this by bringing Quip directly inside of Salesforce. How cool is that? So everything you saw earlier, everything you saw from every live app built on top of the quip platform to spreadsheets and text, now lives directly inside of Salesforce. So every salesperson at your company can collaborate without leaving this view. It means that I can pull in the input I need to prepare for this meeting. I can pull in not just my manager, not just my teammates, but I can pull in the researchers in the lab, I can pull in scientists. And while I'm viewing this from Salesforce, they're viewing it from the Quip app. Whether they're in the lab or on their phone, it feels so different. I mean, look at this. We have a single player view of Salesforce that's now multiplayer. We have multiple people across my entire organization jumping in and helping me prepare for this meeting and correcting my typos. So we just saw the first deep integration between Quip and Salesforce, which brought Salesforce directly into Quip with all of the functionality, co editing, mobile, and of course, commenting in line, that allows us to get to a solution faster than ever. We've also created an amazing document that's going to help me nail this meeting. But I will say, what good is this great briefing document if the people on my team who need to get this information don't read it? So of course I know that my executives at my company and the person I want to read this document spends more time than anyone on their phone. So let's jump over to the phone. What I can do is send them a notification, and a single swipe on that notification will take them to the exact same document on their phone. So what we're looking at is the same document. We just pulled together all the critical information with everyone across my team on the phone. But there's something else I want to share. I want to share Salesforce information, information from Salesforce directly with the person who's viewing this document, my executive. Maybe I'll export a report and share it with them. Maybe I'll take a screenshot of Salesforce. But, you know, these ways of working, they're a little bit flawed because the minute the information leaves Salesforce, now it's out of date. So what I can do is bring a Salesforce live app directly inside of Quip. So what you're looking at here is live information from Salesforce that's directly in the Quip documents. So if I jump into Salesforce and I make a change to say, the employee count. I know that my executive viewing this document in Quip has the most up to date numbers and in fact there's bi directional sync. So I can change information in the QUIP document by updating it in Salesforce, and if I make a change on that document in Quip, it will update in Salesforce. Think about the implications of these two integrations more broadly on the organization. Having Quip documents in Salesforce now means that I can collaborate on any part of Salesforce. It means that if I'm a service cloud agent, I can pull in people across my organization to help me escalate a case. I can put it in community cloud. And the second integration, bringing Salesforce information directly into Quip now means this information that lived in my single source of truth is available to a much wider audience. It means that everyone in my organization, regardless of whether they have a Salesforce license, can view Salesforce information and feel closer than ever to our customers. In Amgen's case, I'll share the good news. We were able to prepare for this meeting by bringing in the critical input we needed directly into Salesforce. We were able to take the Salesforce information, embed it in Quip, and we were able to come to an agreement with the Whitney Hospital Group. Now, across all of our businesses, speed is critical, right? It means we can get products to our customers faster, solve issues faster, and help our customers succeed. But at Amgen, it's truly something else. At Amgen, speed means saving lives, ending suffering, and truly touching the lives of everyone in this room. Thank you for letting me share the Amgen story. I want to hear more from the man himself, Mr. Gary Hagan. So please help me welcome Gary Hagen to the stage.
Thank you.
So I'd love to welcome onto stage Gary Hagan. Gary, it's such a great pleasure to have you here today.
Thank you for having us.
Thank you.
You know, could you tell us, share with us a little bit in the audience more of the culture you guys have At Amgen, it's such a privilege to be able to see into an organization like yours.
Sure. We exist to serve patients. That is the foundation of what we do. Every employee at Amgen shows up to work every day, regardless of what group they're involved in, in support of that mission to improve the lives of our patients. And we realized the best way to do that is through teamwork and that working together, we can always reach the best outcomes possible for those patients.
Well, it sounds like collaboration is pretty important. As part of that teamwork, do you think that's true?
Very much so, yes. First of all, collaboration is a core part of the scientific process, right? And because of that, and because that is our core business, that is really in the DNA of the company, regardless of what group you work with, the idea of collaborating, the idea of challenging each other, the idea of working together to reach the best outcomes. Let me give you an example. We might have R and D facilities all over the world, and our research team in, say, Cambridge, uk, might be working on elevating the white blood cell count for patients who undergo chemotherapy. Their experiments in the lab generate a finding that they want to have validated and they want to have checked. They send it to our team in San Francisco. They run the same experiments and find a few differences that ultimately, long term, could lead to two different therapies out of the same molecule, ultimately broadening the number of patients that we can assist.
That's so fascinating. Now, has using QUIP had an impact on that collaboration that you guys have.
Been able to do? Absolutely. Most of you know, the healthcare industry is poised for major transformation right now, whether it's how you're delivered, the health care, how you're paying for it, providers, et cetera. And we realized that the best way for us to stay in front of that is by increasing the collaboration, speeding up our ability to get drugs to patients and et cetera. With quip, we find that we've transcended time zones, we've transcended the ability for people to collaborate in a frictionless environment, the same as they would in a room together, regardless of where they are and regardless of what they're working on, has been a wonderful impact for us.
Gary, it really is a privilege to have you here and to help in some small way in the way that Amgen is serving patients and trying to help people around the world. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Appreciate it. Now, I'd like to talk about our third trailblazing customer today, which is in a different industry entirely, and that's Citi. Citi is a global leader in international finance and they are a tremendous company. So many companies rely upon them and trust them for how they do their banking every day. But Citi is big. They've been around for a long time, more than 200 years. And for them, they've done so much in their culture to transform, to keep innovating and to keep improving. And so I would love today to bring onto stage someone to talk about how they're empowering employees with quip. So, please, I'd like to welcome on stage Diana Berlin, a product lead here at Quip that's going to talk about how Citi has used slides. Diana?
Thanks, Kevin. You know, as Kevin mentioned, we've been working on quipslides for over a year now, and I've got to say that really puts this other labor of love in perspective. I am so excited to be here on stage sharing our final customer story of the day, Citi. Everyone knows Citi is an iconic global brand. They've been serving their customers and innovating nonstop for over two centuries. But what you may not know is that Citi's built a deep partnership network in order to transform themselves into an always on partner for their customers. Now more than ever, Citi needs to be everywhere their customers are. And collaborating with their partnership network is what makes that possible. When I hear collaboration, I think quip, and so does Citi. Quip is Citi's collaboration tool of choice, driving informed decision making at speed. Let's take a look at how a global business like Citi's can use Quip slides to move work forward faster. Our story starts with Lisa. Lisa is the head of operations for digitization and technology at Citi. She and her team have come up with an amazing new idea to drive value for Citi's customers by leveraging the bank's APIs and their partnership network. But to execute on this idea, she's going to need buy in from senior executives. And Lisa knows that there's no better tool for getting buy in from senior execs than quipslides. So she puts together a slide deck in Quip and she adds her whole team. Quip slides are built for teams, so the whole thing feels natural. Anyone can comment on any slide at any time, just like in the rest of quip. And the whole team can pile in to edit the same slide at the same time, just like in the rest of Quip. Now, after two demos, this might seem obvious. All this real time collaboration. But think about how teams across the world are doing this. Today someone's putting together a presentation, then they're sending it out to a group by email. Then they get feedback by email, but not until the 11th hour. Then at the 12th hour, some poor deck wrangler needs to merge in all the changes manually. It's kind of the worst. But with quipped slides, it doesn't have to be that way. The slide can come together fast and everyone can be in the loop the whole time. With quipped slides, Lisa can add rich visuals to make a point.
And the.
Team can even align on talk track on the slide itself. They're aligning as they work. Now Citi's got a data driven culture, so Lisa wants to add a chart to this slide. But this isn't just any chart. You know, when most of us put charts into presentations, we've got it down to a science. It's a ten step science, but it's still science. You get the report from Salesforce, your source of truth, then you put that in a spreadsheet, then you make a chart, then you tidy it up, then you paste the chart into the presentation. By the time you paste the chart into the presentation, the data is old news. But with Quip slides, you can bring in charts powered by live data. With the click of a button, Lisa can update this chart and the numbers update in real time based on the underlying data in Salesforce. That's right, any chart, any spreadsheet in Quip can be powered by live data from Salesforce. Isn't that amazing? But it's not just live data. It's also live apps. Any live app in Quip can be added to any slide. I'm talking calendars, Kanban boards, and now with the power of the platform, you can add the Einstein analytics live app to quip slides. These are your business critical dashboards from Einstein analytics brought into quips. They're live, they're filterable. You can drill down, you can embed your business critical dashboards, you can embed advanced business intelligence right into your narrative in Quip. So the deck's coming together. It's looking good. We're ready to go into the exec meeting. But wait, what's that? A notification. Okay. What? What? The. The team meeting's canceled? No, the execs meeting ran long and we've been bumped from the agenda. You know, with modern engagement tools like Bitmoji in quip, it's sometimes a little too easy to express yourself. But the great thing about that is that when people can blow off steam and come together as a team, they're able to find solutions. In this case, Lisa's got an idea. No surprise. She knows that quip slides can drive decisions without meetings. So Lisa adds a feedback prompt to this slide. Feedback prompts are a way to engage everyone. They're interactive. And so she adds this. The deck's ready to go for real now, and she's going to send it around to the exec team. Now, she knows that they may still have to have a meeting, but she really, really, really hopes that they can figure this out on the fly. So, okay, here we go. Really needs everyone's input. Let's get going. Okay, so everyone's tapping through. She's biting her nails. She hopes they like it. Okay. You know, wouldn't it be great if Lisa could sate her curiosity by seeing how it's going in real time? That's why we brought Engagement Insights into quip. Here on the right, you see every slide, every place that every reader has responded. So Lisa's able to be in the loop before she's even in the loop. So the great news is everyone's for it. Everyone's for the initiative. They love the idea with Quip slides because they're social, because they're powered by live data, because they're interactive, this team was able to come to a decision and move work forward without a meeting. Pretty amazing. Citi is a trailblazer. Despite operating in a highly regulated industry, they relentlessly innovate to serve their customers. That's what I call culture of action. Inaction. Thanks. And back to you, Kevin.
Thank you, Diana. And congratulations on your upcoming launch. Now I have the distinct pleasure again to welcome onto the stage Lisa Cochran, who is at Citi, the head of operations and technology, to talk a little bit more about what you heard about Lisa. Lisa, thank you so much for being here today. You know, it's really struck me as we work together and figuring out how to help Citi and how to get this going, how much transformation is part of your culture, how much transformation is a part of what you're trying to do? Could you speak a little to that?
Yeah. So, you know, at Citi, we want to be always on for our customers, and that means that we have to be a digital bank that is driving transformation through digitization and. And all of those things. But we also have to think about ourselves and look ourselves in the mirror. And if we're going to really drive digital transformation, there has to be a cultural transformation as part of that, especially as we're trying to help our customers be in the moments that matter most to them. And so Quip is a great tool that's enabled us to be in the moments that matter to us as employees, so that. That we're spending the right time doing the right things, both at Citi and in the things that are important to us in our personal lives.
So how do you think about tools? You know, you've been charged a lot of this transformation inside the company. How do you think about and evaluate tools?
Well, you know, for us, Citi's a global company, we have 100,000 employees just in the global consumer bank alone across 19 regions. And so we figured out at Citi how to work together across the globe. But it's been bau, emails, meetings, and then when you're trying to set up a meeting for people across the globe, you try to accommodate everyone and you satisfy no one because there's no good time for that. And so Quip has enabled us to be able to move faster, be quicker about how we make decisions, how we take an idea from, from an idea, socialize it, get more people involved, collaborating on it and carry it forward.
It's really cool. Now, I know also regulation is a big part of the banking industry. It's important, right? And it's how we protect everyone and do the right thing. How do you deal with that? How are you working within regulations to solve these problems?
So regulation is a big part of being Citi and we want to meet our regulation obligations. We want to protect our customers, we want to protect ourselves as a Citi brand. And you know, that's one of the reasons why our deployment of Quip is on the virtual private cloud that allows us to carry the right level of risk and also use a great collaboration tool. And you know, we just talked about tools a minute ago. But choosing the right tool, you know, can carry risk too. If you choose the wrong tool, you know, you know how that works out. And when you select a tool, it can't be, hey, everybody use this tool. Because people do what's convenient for them and what's comfortable for them. So it has to be about driving adoption through something that they love and they want to spend their time in. And you know, for me, Quip became that. It was a great use case that we saw in the video. But it's also about how do I put together a town hall meeting faster? I have a colleague in New York and we co presented something a couple weeks ago and we did our speaker notes together. He in New York, I in Jacksonville. And it was seamless and it was easy. And then I had this great idea. I want to start a bring your mentee or your child to tech day and we're going to equip it out. And even at home we moved in. My partner, I, my husband Jim, we just moved into a new house and we're doing a landscaping project. And do you know how many palm tree choices there are? So, you know, we can, we can drive the decisions faster through Quip, which, you know, so it can solve those little things that simplify our Life at home, simplify what we do every day, and then also let us be curious and creative across our 100,000 participants and workforce.
I think that's where we all live. Is there anything else that you wanted to add, Lisa?
Yeah.
You know, you mentioned Citi's a 200 year old company and that means that Citi was around for the first, second, third, fourth industrial revolution. And so you don't do that without being agile and adaptable. But part of my job is I manage our intent engine engines or chatbots. And part of managing a chatbot is human tuning. And you know, that's a big responsibility, but I've taken on the big responsibility of doing human tuning of myself. I'm a person of many parts, but part of me is the girl from Nebraska who decided I loved computers. And I took a one way ticket to college and started my life, and started my life by being curious and learning about a world around me that I had only known through literature before that. And curiosity is important. It's part of our culture. At City, we talk about curiosity a lot and curiosity drives creativity. And so I was reading something on Twitter the other day and I was devastated because it said the more that you focus on efficiency, people are less creative. And I was like, that's my job. Part of my job is efficiency too. But then I thought about quip. And quip allows us to be creative in a very, very efficient way. And so I challenge that, that you can to have curiosity and efficiency both. I think we do.
Wow.
Hey. Well, thank you so much. So I really appreciate having you here today.
Thank you.
Story. Well, folks, again, I took you through, over the course of the day, three trailblazing customers. And if we zoom out, they come from different industries. We covered retail, pharmaceuticals, banking. They're all though united by one thing. They're creating a culture of action that empowers their employees to cut through the noise, to actually get more things done and to be more successful. And that's really what matters, is coming back to tools and systems that help your employees do collaborative work with modern communication and connect everything together. That's action and that's empowering people. But up till now, you know, I've been talking a lot about action, but I haven't actually taken any action. So I want to implore all of you, take action right now. Every customer you heard about here, whatever the size of the company, their usage of quip started with a single person. It started with someone saying, hey, I'm not satisfied with these hundred person email chains. I want something better. I want to try something new. So you can start that today. Take action. You can take out your phone right now and text quip to this number, 27100. If you text it, we will reach out to you here at Dreamforce and we will help get you set up. It runs on Salesforce. There's nothing to worry about. We have five licenses for you, so you can get started right away. And you can try having a culture of action empowerment for all of your employees. Now, one more thing for all of you here in the audience. Five lucky people here, if you look under your seat, will have tickets to meet Grammy award winning artist Macklemore tomorrow. So please check under your seats. Some five of you will be lucky. And everyone, thank you for being here today. I really appreciate your time. Thank you so much.
