3 Big Myths You Commonly Hear About Ketosis

Ben Greenfield explains and debunks three common myths about ketosis: (1) you can’t eat out on a ketogenic diet (he gives restaurant strategies and substitutions), (2) you must consume large amounts of saturated fats (he recommends MCTs as an alternative), and (3) ketone supplements require added caffeine or stimulants to be effective (he argues ketones alone provide energy). He also demonstrates and promotes ketone products (Kegenics/Real Ketones) and provides a discount code.

Hi, I'm Ben Greenfield and today I want to talk ketones and specifically bust some ketone myths. So the first myth is this, that you, if you are on a ketogenic diet, are forbidden to go out to restaurants, especially Italian restaurants. And that's simply not true. There are little tweaks, little switches that you can make when you eat out that still allow you to tap into the fat burning and cognitive boosting benefits of ketosis, while still allowing you to enjoy your meal and not have to sit there with say, a knife, a fork and a stick of butter. So just a few quick tips. I always look at the starches, whether that be polenta or fries or potatoes or anything else that might be listed on the menu. And I simply ask the restaurant to substitute roasted vegetables for the starch. In many cases, when you look at the sides that are on the menu, you can see things like Brussels sprouts or cauliflower or mixed vegetables, or even like a butternut squash, which is relatively low carb. And you can substitute these for the starchier sides. The other thing you can do is along with those vegetables, you can ask for a little bit of extra virgin olive oil or, or a little bit of grass fed butter if the restaurant happens to have that, to be able to put on your vegetables and let them taste a little bit better. I actually travel also with something that helps out quite a bit with the electrolyte and mineral depletion that ketosis can cause, but that can also improve the flavor of those vegetables that you order on the side. And that's just a really good salt, like a Celtic salt or Aztec salt or a Himalayan salt or a Kona black salt. I've always got some kind of salt in the fanny pack that I'm famous for showing up to restaurants with. Another thing that you can do is of course, for any sandwich, anything on the menu that looks like it's chock full of amazing ingredients. But the exterior part on either side of those ingredients, specifically the bread or the bun, doesn't satisfy your ketogenic lifestyle. Just ask them to substitute kale, bok choy, Swiss chard. Some restaurants even have those seaweed wraps. It depends on the restaurant that you go to, but you can always get wrap something that you can put that meat or those sandwich innards into to keep you from eating the bun or the bread. So the other thing that I'll sometimes do is just go to the restaurant website, check it out online, and kind of arrive already knowing what I'm going to get, which really helps. One last thing you can do is you can actually bring things that you can swap out for sugary drinks. I like electrolyte tablets. I like stevia. There's this stuff called kegenics. They actually make these packets, like these beta hydroxybutyrate packets that taste really good. I've got one here. They look like this. And you can mix these into water or sparkling water or any low cal or low sugar beverage at the restaurant. The ingredients in this one, for example, is medium chain triglyceride powder and then four different beta hydroxybutyrates, and that's it. The flavor is orange. Blast. It tastes really good. Really good. The next myth that we run into, speaking of medium chain triglyceride oil, is that when you're in ketosis, you got to eat a bunch of saturated fats. A lot of people can't digest those. Well, A lot of people have an inflammatory response to saturated fats. A lot of people store a lot of cholesterol in response to saturated fats. But if you use something like medium chain triglycerides or MCTs, you can actually get a lot of the ketone generating benefits of saturated fats without a lot of the digestive distress or other issues that come along with them. And based on my conversation on my podcast that you can go listen to with Dominique d', Agostino, these can actually step up your ability to create your own ketones too. So medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs, are a great alternative to just eating copious amounts of, say, coconut oil and butter. The next myth that I want to bust regarding ketosis is that you need to have supplements that have lots of caffeine, green tea, polyphenols, or other central nervous system stimulants in them for the ketones to work. Well, it always drives me nuts when people package a bunch of caffeine with a ketone supplement and say it gives you energy, when in fact, you don't even need the caffeine. If you never just, like, skipped the cup of coffee and done just ketones, you'll be blown away at the amount of energy that you can get even without the caffeine. And you're also kind of getting yourself off of a central nervous system stimulant if you put in some ketones to. To replace that extra or that third or that fourth cup of coffee that you drink during the day. So I mentioned this stuff, qgenics, and I showed you this travel pack, which works really well, but the other thing they make that I want to show you. I'm going to give you a big fat discount code on this stuff too is keto meal. Keto meal is like a full meal replacement but they designed it to be a ketone meal replacement rather than being like a maltodextrin fructose whey protein meal replacement. So the ingredients in this, I mean it's close to almost like mom's breast milk really without actually having down your mother and her breasts. It is sunflower oil but it's a stable sunflower oil. Medium chain triglycerides which you already learned about cocoa, a whole bunch of different beta hydroxybutyrates which are the ketones. But then what I really like is they sweeten it with stevia and they put in a vitamin and a mineral blend so you have all your vitamins and the minerals that people tend to dump or lose out on when they're on a ketogenic diet. So it looks like this, it's called kegenics Keto meal. This one is the chocolate flavor which I really like. Just over ice in a blender. It's perfect. So it's called kegenics. The discount code you can use on this stuff, you go to realketones.com the code is BGF15. That'll knock, you guessed it, 15% off of your order from realketones.com so check that out and I mean if anything that you order from that site, get their prime which is just ketones and get their meal which is ketones mixed with everything that you need for a full really satiating but also energy giving meal.
