Ben Greenfield explains why conventional cleaners harm you: synthetic fragrances and endocrine disruptors cause asthma, allergies, hormonal disruption, and respiratory issues. Hey, what's up? I'm Ben Greenfield. I'm not very big on cleaning. Heck, I barely even know how to put on a shirt. But if I do spill something, or if I have somebody coming over to clean for me, which is often the case, or if my wife is tooling around, being the clean freak that she is, don't tell her I said that. I don't like to use synthetic compounds. So let's take cleaning products with fragrances. For example, synthetic fragrances are linked to asthma, allergies, skin irritation, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, cancer, nervous system issues, respiratory issues, endocrine hormone disruption. I'm not kidding. You can go to pubmed and look all this stuff up. They are bad news bears. It shocks me that people have not found ways to make stuff smell pretty well. They have, they're just not popular because they don't have good margins. But anyways, if you look for red flag words like fragrance or perfume or indications on the label of a fresh, clean smell, that is a concern. And it's a concern even with many non toxic, non toxic cleaners and personal care products. So first of all, you want to go with stuff that's ideally fragrance free. You could add some essential oils to it if you want to, and that's a pretty good way to go. Little lemon, little frankincense, any essential oil. Peppermint is actually a great one. So is oregano. Also, the other problem is endocrine disruptors. Okay? Endocrine just basically stands for hormones, all right? There is a ton of stuff in your house that off gases that's loaded with harmful chemicals that can lead to an array of hormone symptoms on top of what you're already getting from things like eating out of plastic containers or drinking coffee out of Styrofoam. You gas station coffee enthusiasts, these chemicals are just about everywhere. They're called endocrine disrupting chemicals, EDCs. They're environmental toxins that mimic your natural hormones but without the benefits. Okay, so all the hormones, none of the benefits. That's not good. It affects the ovaries, the adrenals, the thyroid, a whole bunch of other glands causing your hormones to go completely out of whack and giving you a myriad of unpleasant symptoms to follow. All right, so I know what you're wondering now, what do I actually use if I want to clean? And I'm too lazy to go like buy vinegar and lemons and essential oil. So number one, number one is a concentrate, okay? I have this form of concentrate. One concentrate makes three all purpose bottles. Three streak free bottles, three bathroom bottles, three foaming wash bottles, and 64 loads of laundry. Okay? It's called concentrate and it comes with oxygen boost. And it looks like this. It's made by this company called Branch Basics. Okay? Now I'll read you the label on this and you tell me if this is concerning to you. So first of all, again, can be used for laundry, for carpet, for floors, for vinyl, for linoleum. So here we go. Purified water deco glucoside. Don't worry, it's hard to pronounce, but it's safe. Organic chamomile rakute flower extract, recuteta flower extract. I don't even know how to pronounce that flower. But it's natural. Cocoa glucoside, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium phytate. This bottle again, three all purpose bottles, three bathroom bottles, three streak free bottles, three foaming bottles and one laundry bottle with one bottle. And it's super duper clean. Okay? They also sell this stuff. I love this for just making stuff smell clean when I spill stuff from out in the garage. This stuff smells great, works great. I can clean the toilet with it. Has that nice clean natural smell. It's just bleach water. Okay? Very, very similar ingredient as what I showed you before, but it works perfectly. Doesn't smell half bad. It's biodegradable, totally human safe. Another one. I really like this for cleaning my computer screen. It's a streak free plant and mineral based window cleaner. Again, totally natural. None of the nasty stuff, none of the endocrine disrupting chemicals, none of the crazy fragrances. You just fill your bottle to the water line, then you add concentrate to the soap line, they send the bottles out with you and you top the bottles off with water and then you get cleaning. So Branch Basics Concentrate does the kitchen, the countertops, the floors, the bathroom, the toilets, the laundry, the produce, your hands, you name it. Then their oxygen boost, what they include with your order, that's good for things like toilets and burnt pots and pans and shoes and laundry and grout. So get this, the air inside your home can be up to 500 times more polluted than outdoor air. Cleaning products and other products that you use in the home, they're the primary contributors to that. Okay? So when you're walking through an office or through a house or your home smells so fresh and so clean because the cleaner just left, they don't realize they could have just screwed your testosterone, screwed your estrogen, messed up everything from your nervous system to your metabolism to your fertility and beyond. I know it smells nice, but you gotta be careful. So the branch basic stuff, it's made safe. It's EWG certified, it's Leaping Bunny certified, and I don't quite know what that is, but it sounds pretty good. And as you can see, the bottles are super, super easy to use. I didn't show you this one. It's their bathroom toilet tile, grout, shower, one that you can make using that concentrate. It's non gmo. It's even gluten free. Those of you who are going to put cleaning products on your pizza anyways, though, it's branch basics. Check it out in the caption of this video to see where you can get it with my special discount and enjoy your guilt free cleanliness.
