Get STRONGER and FASTER with a Weighted Vest!

Ben Greenfield breaks down how a weighted vest builds strength and endurance. The Ion vest uses fractional loading at about 5% of your body weight, compressive neoprene that retains heat for thermogenic effects, and antimicrobial materials designed for all-day wear across workouts and recovery.

What are the benefits of wearing a weighted vest? Well, it increases heart rate and exertion, which taxes your cardiovascular system more than if you're not weighted. It can be worn in conjunction with any current workout routine to amplify results, whether that be weight training, high intensity interval training, some bodyweight push ups or squats, or just cardio. It's easy to use, it's simple. It's an effective piece of equipment. You can use it while you're cleaning the garage, walking around the house, hiking, or any other time when you want to introduce a little bit of extra weight to your workout for added muscle and cardiovascular effects. In older populations, the use of weighted vests can even counteract issues like osteoporosis or low bone density and sarcopenia, or loss of muscle with age. Now, Ion inventor Brent Yates was recovering from a shoulder surgery. He was looking for a tool to get back in shape quicker. He tried nearly every vest on the market and, like me, came away pretty disappointed. See the existing vests, you know this if you've ever worn one, painfully hang a weight around your neck and shoulders. The materials can be abrasive against the skin. The fit is often not compressive or conducive to body weight workouts or cardio because they're bouncing all over the place. And the appearance leaves a little bit to be desired as well. So, unable to find a better option, Brent actually built one called ion. So ion has fractional loading and targets about 5% of body weight. And the weight of the vest increases with the vest size to stay within that target range. So it stresses your body without overloading your body. That allows you to remain explosive, nimble and functional while providing resistance that forces your body to adapt to a heavier load. It's safer than overloading your musculoskeletal system with heavy weights or plate carriers. That's especially true for people wearing the vest during recovery, such as post workout recovery or training for return to play after an injury. Now, athletes can drill, practice and condition in a vest like this. There's no need to change workouts, sacrifice skill training, or add time to practice. The simple addition of the vest to a regular routine allows you to get more out of the activity. So the extra weight enhances cardiovascular endurance, strengthens the heart and lungs, and it does so because the body has to adapt to the additional cardiovascular stress of a little bit of extra weight over time, which adds up quickly. The vest also improves functional strength, particularly stabilizing muscles in your core. Now, compression is also an essential, very unique component of the Ion vest that no one else offers in the weighted vest industry. The compressive fit of the vest really hugs your midsection and carries the weight on your core, eliminating strain on your neck and shoulders. The compression allows you to perform dynamic movements without the vest shifting, flopping or moving. It allows you to become one with the weight, increasing proprioception and coordination through sensory feedback. Compression coupled with the weight pack placement and design provides for a full and natural range of motion with Ion, promotes increased blood flow, improves endurance by delaying the onset of fatigue during a workout, and provides additional support during active recovery exercises. The compression of the vest also brings good attention to your breath, causing you to engage in deep intentional breathing. Now it's also insulatory. The neoprene fabric and weight pack design intentionally retains body heat, thus raising your core temperature and stimulating thermogenesis, much like a sauna. So key parts of the vest, including the spinal column, have breathable neoprene to expel heat so vasodilation will occur, improving blood flow to muscles as those vessels widen. This helps your muscles work more efficiently and endure longer periods of activity. That increased heat also results in greater sweating, providing a little bit of a detox effect. The construction, comfort and durability of Ion bar None Top Quality neoprene is strong, durable, flexible and retains its shape over time all day. Comfort makes Ion an easy addition to your workout, fitness class or hike or walk, and it can easily be worn outside of the gym for additional hours of benefits. It's the only vest I've found that can be worn for hours without discomfort. For example, top D1 wrestling programs have been wearing these things and drilling while actively wrestling during practice, evidencing both the durability and comfortability in this extreme use case with the Ion. In addition, the neoprene is antimicrobial, as is the fabric they use to wrap the weight packs in the Ion, creating a safe and odor resistant vest that requires infrequent cleaning and can easily be hand washed, sprayed with a garden hose or just clean with any cleaner that's safe for skin contact and you just hang it to dry. The weight packs are a dense foam with stainless steel slopes and a marine grade zipper. Perfectly suited for use as it's very strong and impervious to sweat. They've even meticulously fit tested their designs to accommodate a woman's needs and physiology with women's specific designs, providing women's specific lines that are separate designs entirely from the men's. Ion has created weighted vests and jackets for men and women that are designed to be worn outside of the gym. Because wearing weight is part of a daily practice for optimal health, it's a game changer. It's a cheat code on your cardiovascular and weight training. You don't have to change your workout routine in drastic ways to see great results. You can just add a small change to your routine, like Ion's weighted vest.
