Hack Your Brainwaves to Meditate Like a Monk with Muse

Ben Greenfield demos the Muse S headband, which reads your brainwaves via EEG sensors and adjusts meditation sounds in real time based on what your brain is doing. The device works for guided meditations (5-40 minutes) and sleep tracking, and costs far less than clinical neurofeedback.
It's just arrived. It's called a Muse, the Brain Sensing headband. So here's what's cool. Meditation just got upgraded. I've been looking forward to getting this brand new.
S series headband from Muse. So the thing is, you can meditate, but you can also wear a headband and you can meditate, and it will actually pick up your brain waves and adjust the sounds, the voices, the cue, the birds, the raindrops, the underwater sequence, everything based on the brain waves that are actually picked up by your phone when you're wearing the band. You can also do the same thing during a night of sleep. It will literally detect which sleep stage that you're in and adjust the sounds and the cues that it plays for you accordingly. I've been having a ton of fun researching what Muse is doing, and now this thing has actually arrived. I'm going to open it up and show it to you here. So basically, I have an interview with the person who invented this, Ariel Garten, and what it is. It's a very small device like this, and it comes with a charger. Okay. So you have the actual sensor and the charger, and then this is the actual band. And I'll show you how it works because I've learned a lot from Ariel after interviewing her on the podcast on the best way to use this thing. So I get this and just click this into here. You can see the setup is super easy. Okay, now it's already ready to go on my head. Now, at this point, you'll want to, of course, adjust it a little bit based on your head size, but it's probably going to be pretty close for me just out of the box. You put it on your head like this, and you want this band, if you're going to sleep with it, to go just a little bit below the hard bone in the back of your head.
The sensors will pick up your EEG brain data here and also on the front of your head. It takes about 60 seconds for your phone to start picking up the data, and then all you do is sit or lay down in your relaxation state or your meditative state. You press play on whichever Muse session that you want to go to. Meditation sessions that go anywhere from five minutes up to 40 minutes in length, and it walks you through everything, even if you've never meditated before. I've also started experimenting with sleeping with this thing, and you can actually do side sleeping and roll around during the night, and it actually stays on. And it's more accurate than any wearable that exists in terms of tracking your sleep. Because it's not just tracking movement and heart rate and temperature. It's tracking your actual brain waves. Normally, you'd have to go to a super fancy, expensive neurofeedback institute to do this, but MUSE has cracked the code on pulling all this off in the comfort of your own home. So if you want smart, science based, technology backed meditation, wherever you are, no matter what your experience with meditation is, you got to try this thing. So it's the brand new MUSE s headband. Check it out. Meditation is going to be different for you forever.
