Ben Greenfield explains why mitochondrial efficiency matters for health, linking poor mitochondrial function to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Elite athletes score 85-90 on mitochondrial potential while most people fall far below that baseline.

When you hear that, that term mitochondrial efficiency, how do you describe that? I mean, it's this notion of how healthy an individual is. Right. Simple thing that I think the world is facing right now, epidemically, is overweight. Right. If you look at every country in the world, there is an issue of obesity that then ultimately leads to diabetes, which then leads to multi organ failure and other things. Interestingly, the majority of deaths that are tied to diabetes ultimately are a result of cardiovascular dysfunct or your heart dysfunctions in a unique kind of way. There are certain individuals that we see, their mitochondrial potential is way higher than this. So elite athletes tend to have a hugely high mitochondrial potential. They're pushing probably 85, 90 on a normalized scale. And so you've got some room to improve here. If you wanted to get to that stage.
