Ben Greenfield reflects on feeling sad when he leaves home for business trips and links that sadness to periods when he hasn't been fully present or devoted to his family. He argues that being "all in" at home—prioritizing family time, presence, love, and preparation—reduces the guilt/angst of traveling for work.

Hey. So I'm getting ready to go on one of my trips to a conference. And sometimes when I leave my home and family for business travel, I get a little bit sad. Something sometimes feels empty and lonely inside. And that doesn't happen all the time, but definitely happens some of the time.
And here's the thing.
I've gradually begun to notice that the times I feel sad when I leave.
My home and my family are correlated.
To the periods of time when I haven't been that devoted to my family.
When I am at home, when I've.
Been too busy working and catching up in the basement or the office, or have generally had a low level of presence and time available for my family.
Leading up to travel, or have been.
Engaged in my own hobbies and my own interests.
And this is particularly noticeable when I.
Haven'T been spending time with my children. My sons.
See, a major role of a parent.
Is to prepare their children for life.
But if you haven't prepared your children.
By giving them time and presence and love and education and instruction and correction.
And then you temporarily leave, you get this internal angst. And get it. Because what you're experiencing is likely related.
To the fact that deep down inside.
You know your children aren't quite ready for you to be gone. You get that. So the only way to walk away from your family, particularly your children with a good conscience not to be sad when you leave them is to live your life with them. When you are home in such a way that you are all in for your family, you prioritize them. Waking, afternoons, evenings, they come before you. And if there's angst in your soul, if you're a traveling person, a parent, for work, and you leave and there's angst, it's a pretty good sign that you're not spending the time that you do have at home with the proper priorities. See, because for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So what do you treasure?
The gym and your books and magazines and your learning and your special interests and getting out and about with your friends, which nothing's wrong with all that stuff. But if you get sad when you leave your house, yeah, part of that.
Is just loving and missing your family.
But if it happens and it feels.
Like it's this angst, like this struggle.
A lot of times that means you're not spending the time that you are.
Home in the right way. It's all about preparing your family, protecting and providing. So when you leave, you don't have that conscience that you should be home. You can have both.
You just have to do the right.
Thing when you are home so that when you travel, you have that peace of mind that they're prepared, that you've set the foundation. Thanks for watching.
