Ben Greenfield teaches a lunge-based drill to prepare for splits. Start in a lunge with props under your hips, straighten your front leg, and slide out until your hips start to twist. The key is keeping your hips square and level throughout.
So make sure you do the lunge exercises.
On both legs, each one in front. That's your preparation for your splits. And then, actually, let me grab.
You're going to find two props. In this case, I don't have two blocks, so I'm using this foam roller. You're going to start in the same position, the lunge position.
For whichever leg you're going to work first.
Square your hips up.
Support yourself in an upright position as you can possibly be in. So you don't want to be here. You want to try to sit up as much as you can, which is why you might need something higher to start with.
You're going to sit back, straighten your front leg, realign your hips, and you're going to slide out to as far as you can go before you start twisting your hips.
So the idea is to stay extremely square in your hips, and eventually.
You won't need the support anymore. But the idea is to never start turning out, so always stop where you start to feel that pull to the side.
