138. I Just Updated My Portfolio, Here’s My Thought Process
26 Feb 2024 · 11 min
Podcast episode (Ben Simpson with Bergs) explaining Ben’s recent portfolio restructure ahead of the 2024 Bitcoin halving. Ben explains the market-timing thesis — bitcoin-led run into the halving, followed by ~12–18 months of altcoin outperformance — and details positioning choices (increasing exposure to Solana, DeFi, layer-1s, and ETH) while keeping clear target allocations and an exit plan into blue chips or fiat. The episode also highlights use of a portfolio dashboard and a membership CTA for listeners who want coin-level specifics.

You don't want to fuck up this cycle. We've been waiting four years. This is it. I've added another five coins to my portfolio because the 12 to 18 months post Bitcoin halving is the most profitable. The time is now. Welcome back to another episode of the Ben and Bergs Podcast. I'm Ben, your favorite high school dropout and founder of collective shift alongside Ms. Burgs, your favorite NBA and COO of Collective Shift. Join us as we bring you world class crypto research and strategies to help you dominate this crypto bull market as well as behind the scenes view of us scaling a fully remote subscription research business. If you'd like the podcast, we'd love for you to leave a subscribe or follow us on the podcasting apps. It does truly help us grow the podcast. Today we are sharing a little bit of behind the scenes of a recent restructure. Very, very recent restructure of my portfolio that I've done. And we know one of the most valuable things you know on this podcast is us sharing what we're doing with our portfolio, how we're navigating the markets, what we're buying, what we're selling. This is exactly what we do over a Collective Shift, our company that shares our insights and expert analysis on what we're doing in the market and what we're doing with our portfolio. And we won't be going into each individual altcoin on this podcast because we saved that for our membership. So if you want to see exactly what what we're buying and what we're doing, you can head over to Collective Shift booking a strategy call and we can help you there. But this will be valuable regardless in a sense of how we've sort of thought through where we are. And I just wanted to share with you that the reason I'm buying and adding to my portfolio now is just the position we're in in the market. So, you know, diving into the market a little bit where we are now, we're pre Bitcoin halving, so we're, you know, less than, you know, less than a few months away now. We're coming up about mid April is estimated to be the bitcoin halving this year. And as you know, if you've been listening to the podcast, the 12 to 18 months post Bitcoin halving is the most profitable historically of the four year cycles. And bitcoin tends to lead the market into a bitcoin halving. So as we go into the next few weeks, we expect bitcoin to grind a little bit higher. But post halving, that's where we start to see retail investors coming back and return and we start to watch the signs of, you know, more app downloads, exchanges are growing, website traffic growing. And that's when the real bull market kicks in, when we start to get that, that retail wave. So it happens in two phases, bull markets. Phase one is where bitcoin starts to grow. And the total market capitalization, the dominance is, is primarily bitcoin. And that's where we are about now. So if we go back to October 2023, the start of this bull market, the bitcoin dominance was around 40%. It's currently at about 52%. So the Bitcoin dominance has grown around 12% over the last, you know, let's say five months. Right. That's what tends to happen leading up into a bitcoin halving. Now post bitcoin halving, the altcoin market share starts to grow. And that happens for about that 12 months post Bitcoin halving. And that's has happened historically and we had that altcoin season back in 2017 and back in 21, 2022 and we fully expect this to happen again. So I've made a few more investments. I've added another five coins to my portfolio because we're heading into this phase two, the next few months. I bought two altcoins middle of last year, one in the DeFi space and the layer two. And now I've added more DeFi infrastructure token, another layer one and some more ETH. And I just really wanted to get my percentage allocation right. And I think Bergs, you know the. One of the awesome features on over on our platform is the dashboard because you can visually start to play around with your portfolio and get a breakdown of each sector. And I think it's something that most people don't actually realize that there might be over underexposed in a certain sector. So what I was able to do with my plan of the tokens I wanted I could play around with my portfolio to see what percentage allocation I needed to get to my target in my portfolio. And it's a really cool way to sort of set that strategy up.
Absolutely mate. And I like that visualization as well because you can see you might not know that some areas and sectors have actually grown significantly and you'll need to rebalance that and sell those down. And Ben, like last year you're saying, you know, you got the tingle mate. So you end up buying some altcoins, you were still averaging in and now you've kind of got that again. You've seen where we are in the market and that has been enough to prompt you to buy these additional altcoins.
Yeah. So I think you know, for starters Solana's had a lot of attention in the markets. Obviously had a great year. Bullish on Solana and even just playing around with Solana more and more recently like you just really do get to see the user experience on Solana is far superior I'm going to, I'm going to say than Ethereum. Not to say that I, I don't like Ethereum. I'm super bullish on Ethereum and that's my biggest layer one holding. But you start to see why so many people are going to Solana, why there's so many airdrops, why there's so many things being built there. Another area with on Solana that I'm you know, starting to get more bullish on is the D PIN sector where you're starting to see like real infrastructure of, you know, real world mapping for example that can only be built on Solana due to its scalability. So that's the area I'm looking into. Gaming is obviously a sector that I'm looking into. I think it's very competitive. I haven't bought anything in the gaming sector just yet just because I just don't see a real clear market leader.
But then also like continue to be super bullish on Defi. There's some, some good projects there and we talk about this accessibility discount burgs like there's still so many tokens with low market caps because of how difficult it is to get access to and why the majority are not going to be able to get access for a little while. Giving us that, that accessibility discount.
Yeah, absolutely man. Like this is the thing. So if it's difficult to do and there's value there and it'll have long term, you can see a path to long term value. Get in there, you're front running everyone else because it's difficult to do. You're doing the hard thing. And again an analogy is like the house that doesn't get sold because it's too difficult, but someone will have the skills to be able to renovate it or subdivide it or knock it down and build like four houses on it. If you're that person that has that skill set, get in there and make that money.
Yeah, spot on man. And so like really my strategy for the next 12 to 18 months is you're going to ride a lot of these old coins up, but then eventually I just want to get out of my, all my old coin positions at the top of this next cycle. Bitcoin outperforms 99% of any other asset in, in the, in the crypto market, historically in bear markets. And I would expect that to be the same moving forward. And even if you look last year, I mean, bitcoin was up 155% up there is one of the most best performing assets in the world. But yet because we're in crypto, we try and aim for higher returns and then people just add too much risk on the, on their portfolio because it's not enough.
Isn't it weird, like if I went to someone and I was like, hey, if you got 155% return on your shares in a year, how would you feel? Whereas if you're in crypto, you're like, why isn't that a 20x 1.5x 2.5x? It's just, it's so, so crazy, man. So you've got over here that you're going to rotate from your alts out. Do you know what you're going to rotate into?
Yes. So my goal of this next cycle is to start to diversify and look to build up, you know, a share portfolio, buy some properties. So I'll most likely rotate out of and into, into Fiat. Yeah, that'll be the absolute peak of the cycle. Like, you know, during this altcoin boom, if I still had Bitcoin and if I still think Bitcoin and Ethereum will continue to run, I might even rotate some of my Altcoins into Ethereum, for example, or some of the Solana project into Solana. So I might just rotate more into blue chips first and then out to Fiat. Just really depends on when these altcoins start to run. And it's why I'm a firm believer of not having too many altcoins in your portfolio, because you can see and track each of them individually to see when it's time to get out. If you have too many altcoins in your portfolio, you don't know where they are in the cycle. You might either A, sell too early, B, sell too late, or C, just not sell at all. So having just enough in your portfolio so you can monitor is super important.
Yeah. Or you'll be like me, where you forgot about one of your tokens and it had a 20 bagger and you didn't sell it because you're going to figure it out tomorrow but then it was too late.
I mean go listen to that episode guys if you haven't. Burges miss out on a big 20 bagger.
Still hurts. Still hurts.
So yeah, look, I think overall like just I'm comfortable with my position now. I've got my percentages, I'm still under exposing gaming, I'm still looking to add a gaming token to my portfolio. But you know, I'm holding 50% of BTC, 20% ETH and then the rest altcoins. One altcoin that I've been holding now for a little while in the defi space is up considerably. So you know, as you start to grow in these altcoins you just do need to recognize you either need to be okay and comfortable with holding so much of a individual altcoin because it's run up or you need to start to diversify and rotate in the rotate that into another coin. So just be aware of that. I'll be starting to do that. If it continues to rally up, I might look to build up my other altcoin positions or push it into Ethereum. But for now, as we head into this sort of phase two of this market, getting that strategy in order, getting your altcoin positions right is super important.
Mate. What a great episode. And it really gives us a good idea of where we are in the market, where your head's at, how you're actually positioning yourself. You've actually done this already, did it kind of last week and mate, that's perfect. I just can't wait for the halving and everything that happens after that.
We've been waiting four years, mate. This is it. You don't want to fuck up this cycle. Four years of waiting like this to the time is now.
That's it, mate. And the message here is to position yourself accordingly for what's about to happen. You've got time, make sure you spend it wisely. And you don't want to be that person that's allocated the wrong way or you've made the wrong choices. You want to be allocated in a way that helps you achieve your goals.
Yeah. And if you need help with that or you do want to see what these coins are, you know, you can come and join up as a member and we're going to help you along the way. We're investors ourselves. We're here to win this cycle. We want to win you, win with you as well. So we know a lot of Bennett Berg's listeners have been booking callsbergs and doing strategy with us and becoming members, which is super awesome. If you want that, we do have a link in the description. You can book a strategy call, jump on. It's 15 minutes. It's not a sales call. It's completely complimentary. No obligation. We answer your questions, we point in the right direction, and for a lot of you, that we can't help or you're not in the right spot. We'll just point you in the right direction, give you the resource you need to win. So you can head over there, book a call. We'd love to help you out.
Awesome, mate. What a cracking episode.
Thanks, guys. We'll see you next time.
Thanks, Jeffries.
