Bergs describes onboarding via a remote coaching app (TrainHeroic), a six-days-per-week program, daily gym habit formation, reductions in chronic pain from a 2016 car crash/fibromyalgia, better sleep and resilience, and motivational social observations at the gym. The episode ends with a recommendation to visit athletetraining.com (Jordy) and practical encouragement to seek accountability and build a gym habit.

I know that you can get fit and you can have a different life, but experiencing it in this way and just not having that pain that's so energy draining and difficult to get out of bed, but also just feeling the structural changes in my body. I never thought I would even get to this point or feel this way and I'm just so excited about where I'll be in six months.

Because today Bergs is giving us the beans about his PT that he's finally gotten after two years of of me going, bergs, hurry up, he's got it done. And Bergs, how you feeling mate? How's the new pt, mate?
I'm feeling great. So when we write our reflections at the end of the year.
One of mine was to get accountability to work out. Basically just get a PT and sort my life out because I've been working out here and there doing a lot of lifting, but it wasn't personalized. I wasn't going to a gym, I was doing it at home. I lacked a lot of motivation where I go really hard for two or three months and take a month or two off or I get sick or I get injured or have some stupid excuse. Now I finally got a pt, so I'm like, fine, I'll get a pt. I'm not going to let Ben win and let him hang on me all day long for not having a PT and being a useless fat bastard. So I'll get one, I'll see how it goes. And mate, it is the best thing I've ever done. So we've got I signed up with Jordy who's based in Melbourne, so it's a remote personal trainer, which is a wild thing, but it's actually amazing. I have trained with him once when I went to Melbourne and we did a podcast with him a while ago which we'll link in the show notes. So mate, let me tell you about the process and then I'll tell you about what it's actually done for me. So I dropped him a message. I'm like, all right, bro, let's do this. And he's like, yes, ladies. So then, like, later on, he gives me a phone call and he's like, finally, mate. And he's just asking me, like, you know, you're doing this. What do you. What do you want to achieve? What are any issues you have? Anything like that? And for me, it was basically to not have pain in my body and look good in a T shirt. That's pretty much it. Like, I don't care about giant muscles. I do have other, bigger strength goals for the future, but those are my immediate goals. To build a gym habit. Because I want to do something every single day. I want to get out of the house and I want to go somewhere and I want to get after it. And he's like, yeah, no worries. Within, like a couple of hours, he's like, download this app. Here you go. It was a train heroic app. So I download it and he's already got every single day something for me to do. So it's six days a week. And within this app, Ben, this. We talked about this app, and it is so good. So you'll have, like, this is your warm up. And he'll write down exactly what it is, and you can tick. I've done this, what the weight was. And there's individual, like, YouTube videos of him doing the techniques for each little thing. So all you have to do is turn your brain off, go to the gym, do the warm up, and then you lift whatever he says to lift. The thing I like about it is it's got how many kind of sets and reps you should do. You kind of choose the weight and it shows you what you did last time. And you tick it off as you go. You complete your workout. At the end, it's like, how hard was it? And on and on it goes. But you've also got him on WhatsApp. So I'm like, bro, this exercise doesn't make sense. Or my gym doesn't have this or this really hurts me. And he'd be like, yeah, no worries, and just modify it. Or my squat, I have butt wink were around my back. So he's like, bro, send me a video. He's like, great, put some plates on your feet, do this, do that. And it was just. It is the most epic experience. And before I go any further, Ben, the app, mate, we. So I'm going to use the language we use when we were talking about it. Right. It's like you get into this app and you're like, oh, this is what I did last time. And if you don't do all the sets, you're a piece of shit. You're worthless. If you don't tick it off, you're a piece of shit. You have to go the next one, the next one. And the app is so, like, gamified that, like, you get to the end, you knack, and you're like, nah, I have to do it or I'll die.
The worst thing is when you miss a day and the little dot is still gray, it's not yellow, and you're looking back and Tuesday is still a gray.
And you're like that, that happened to me where it's like I had one gray day and like, I literally took the workout and moved it to Sunday so I could do it at the end of the week. So I had a green week.
And you feel. So if you have a gray day.
Yeah. Oh, exactly, mate. It's so gamified. And it shows you, like, you know, what you did previously, the different percentages, and it'll show you where you rank all this sort of stuff and just how you're going over time. It's really, really amazing. And look, getting in the gym. So my routine is pretty much Monday's leg day, Tuesday, Monday's arm day, Tuesday is pretty much leg day, Wednesday, I'll ride my bike. Thursday, arm day.
Friday, I've got a cold, my brain's not working. Friday is leg day again. And then on the weekend I'll just go for a walk and do a few other things. And just getting out and going to the gym every single day has been life changing. Going to the gym and seeing people that are just in the middle of the day taking time out of their day to get after it, get sweaty, like, that is so motivating is unbelievable. And then the other thing's been like, I pretty much got no pain in my body, which is I've only got muscle soreness. I've had pain since 2016 when I had my car crash, had fibromyalgia and chronic pain. And that is now gone because of the way I'm working out with. Yeah, I'm doing big lists, but I'm doing a lot of smaller assistance exercises where you can only do like 1, 2, 3 kilo dumbbells because they're so crazy. And even like little rotator cuff movements and the amount of energy I have is insane. My resilience is through the roof. A Lot of stuff doesn't bother me. My posture is so much better. My sleep. I'm now sleeping like nine hours because I'm exhausted. Normally I sit in bed going, what about this? What about that might be going now? It's like. And I'm just.
Yeah, sleep is the best thing. I find that improves when you work out. Like, you just. You're exhausted and cooked, but you also feel good, you know, after a workout. So you can just head to bed knowing you've achieved something. It's like an achievement thing, really.
As soon, as long as I've worked out for the day, the day is one and I'm ahead. Whereas if it's work, it's always the next thing, the next thing, more, more, more. It's crazy. And if you don't work out, you feel like a piece of crap. So I've worked out consistently except for the last two days because I've had a cold and I've been in bed and, mate, do I ever feel like a piece of crap. When was the last time you. How do you find working out when you're traveling, mate?
It was hard because in Greece it was like there was no real gyms and we're just partying.
So I probably had three weeks off, which sucked because I was probably the fittest I'd been in a long time. I'd ran a half marathon the week before I came to Europe, and then I came to Europe and just, you know, felt like a walking Euros for two weeks.
Hit the gym yesterday and it was good, man. I felt like just got a good pump on and then had a sick sleep. Like, it was the first proper sleep. I'd had like 10 hours last night and then went for a run this morning. And yeah, that was pretty brutal. I only ran like 4k's and I was like hell. Really? I felt it, but already I feel good. I sleep better. The mind starts ticking over. You're less foggy, less sort of potato y. Just more clarity.
Yeah. Don't you. I feel so much more creative. And for me, the difference, like, I've worked out, like quite a lot in my life, but the difference now is over the last kind of six, eight weeks, I built a gym habit. Like, I just like going there to the point where I'm selling the equipment that I have in my garage. Like, I'll never work out there again.
Oh, you're going to a gym now?
Yeah, yeah, so I'm going to a gym. I've actually had a gym membership there for like six months. I never used it because it was incredibly cheap, like the deal. But I go there and, mate, just seeing people get after it. But it's not. Yeah, it's good. It's not the big monsters that I like to see or the fit person in the squat rack. Occasionally I'll look at their form. That's great. There's. There's three people that I like to look at. So one is. Oh, he'd probably be a man in his 60s. And I think he's just had an amputated leg and he comes in with his. Yeah, he comes in with his wife and he's just doing rehab on the machines. I just look at this guy and I'm like, holy. Like, if this guy can get after it and go through that and do all of it, mate, I have no complaints whatsoever. Yeah. And then there's another person, like, this is. This is so wild. So it was like an old guy and he's, like, lifting weights. He's even got, like, a barbell on in, like, the rack, and he'll put a band around it with a kettlebell and he'll just do wrist curls and he'll, like, lift. And I think he was doing deadlifts as well. I started talking to him and he's got terminal cancer, right? He's got prostate cancer. So he's an old guy. I reckon he'd be 70s, maybe even pushing 80. Mate, he's in the gym every single day. He's going to die. And he's just saying, yeah, I'm just working out because, you know, I went on a holiday and tried to pull the bag off, like the carousel at the airport. I went flying with it. I'm not having that. So I'm getting back in the gym and I'm like, bro, this guy's days are numbered. And he's getting after it. Like, that is so motivating.
Yeah.
Like, seeing those people and it just puts my. What I think are problems in perspective. I've got no excuse whatsoever. And then there's the very stout Asian mother that comes in, mate. My God, she just has a look of destruction on her face. She wears, like, a baggy shirt. She's not, like, not slim, not overweight. She's just very stout and she wears leggings. And she comes in and she just destroys machines. Like, I think she's got the rage inside and she just crushes it. Now. Look at how she got that burn, mate. Oh, my God, mate, I would not fight her. She would throw me over the roof and it's just like, you know, when they got like that, like, far more mum strength, like, you know, that crazy strength. And, like, she motivates the hell out of me.
And then she got the eyes, right? You got the eyes. Just know she's gonna.
She's so locked in. You would not get between her and machine because she would kill you. Like, oh, it is so, so motivating. And. And so we made this episode because this is an important part of my life for a couple of reasons. One, I said I was going to do what I've wanted to do for a while, and I've finally done it. And this was a very hard thing for me to do because it is asking for help. I'm not good at that. So I did that even though I'm paying someone for a service. And it's just been amazing. Jordy's giving me the accountability that I need and a program that's tailored for me. I just. He's just such a calm dude, and he's just so encouraging. He's just like, bro, like, you're doing like. I remember once after a workout, I look at the work, I look at the app, and I'm like, this. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. He's a. This is like. It's way beyond my capabilities. And it was something like, you know, squats. And then. Oh, what are those? Are they Bulgarian or whatever? Split squats?
Bulgarian split squats.
Oh, with like, a raised leg at the back. Oh. So are you trying to balance? You're holding dumbbells and you're trying to split squat. Doing that shows me how weak my quads and hamstrings are. And then, like, single leg deadlifts while you're trying to, like, balance. And a couple of other exercises after I did that, first of all, I got through it and I did it and I was like, holy, I can't believe I did that. I got in the car and I dropped him a message, and I was just like, mate, that workout was completely. But it was exactly what I needed. Like, my. My actual. Like, my legs, like, even, like, around, like, my groin, glutes everywhere, just felt so loose because it's so tight. I'm sitting in a chair and I was just like, holy, this is exactly what I need. And he's just like, mate, I'm so glad to hear that. He's like, I love hearing messages like this. He's like, bro, just imagine where you'll be in two weeks and even six months from now you're gonna be a totally new man. And that excited me so much. Just like I've. I know that you can get fit and you have a different life, but experiencing it in this way and just not having that pain that's so energy draining and difficult to get out of bed, but also just feeling the structural changes in my body. I never thought I would even get to this point or feel this way. And I'm just so excited about where I'll be in six months.
That's epic, man. I love it. And also mentally as well, I think, like, that's. That's the biggest part for me. It just like helps the clarity and the thinking and the anxiety and all of that just manages stress better and.
Oh, I'm hardly anxious about anything. And resilience is through the roof. Like, I go to the gym with probably 50 problems. I come back with zero. Like, everything is just sorted. Life is okay. Having a hard workout is the thing for me, mate.
Yeah, 100%, man. Well, super stoked, boy, mate, when I.
Love it, man, honestly. And I will make a recommendation here. Anyone that wants to sign up to this kind of training. If you're in Melbourne, go and see Jordy. If not, jump on his website. It's athletetraining.com we'll drop it in the show notes. I don't get any money for this. It's actually incredibly cheap to go with him. And life changing. That is why I'm recommending it. Give it a go. Get some accountability and get in the gym and build that habit. It's. It's awesome.
Great work, man. He's great. Love, love, Jordy. Looking forward to get back in my program next week and heading, heading back on the app, mate. I couldn't look at it. There's too many gray dots. So I'll be back on it next week, mate.
That's it. You get shamed into it. But yeah, every, every month he drops, like, updates the routine as well. And it just keeps you going. It's like slight variations and it's at your level and pushes you just enough. It's. Yeah, he's got it down, man. And even a couple of times I'm like, bro, on leg day, there's way too many sets. I'm just not getting to the other ones. He's like, yeah, no worries. Takes them out, modifies them. It's just. Yeah, it's good. I didn't expect it to be like this, man. I'm very, very happy and thank you for that recommendation because this is life changing for me more than anything else I've ever done. It's better than. Yeah, it's the best gift that someone could give me. Ben.
Oh, mate, that's awesome, man. I'm glad you. I'm glad you got it done. It took a little bit of pushing. I was like, mate, I'm sick of your. You had a few excuses there. I was like, mate, I'm sick of it. You're in the. Done.
Takes a lot of pushing, mate. It's. It was. It was a long push for a long period of time, I think, and now I'm just getting after it. And. Yeah, the only thing is that I wish I would have done it sooner, mate.
Yeah, good work, man. Glad you did it. Better than. Better than most, mate. Amazing. Well, we'll wrap it up there. Thanks, everyone. You can check out the in the show notes for Jordy's website.
