76. How To Prepare and Profit from the Upcoming Crypto Supercycle
7 Jul 2023 · 18 min
Podcast episode (recorded July 7, 2023) where Ben Simpson and Bergs discuss the approaching Bitcoin 'supercycle' tied to the four-year halving, institutional moves toward spot Bitcoin ETFs (notably BlackRock filing with $9T AUM), and recent market events. They cite MicroStrategy's acquisition of 12,333 BTC (avg. ~$28,163) as of June 27, 2023, MicroStrategy's total holdings (~100,333 BTC), growing institutional interest (Invesco, WisdomTree filings; edX exchange; custodians like Coinbase), and industry developments (FTX bids, Koinly passing 1M users). Hosts urge listeners to prepare portfolios and promote their Collective Shift advisory calls.

It's always been a meme where we're like, the big boys are coming, they're.
Going to be here and then they're literally.
Now it's literally happening. Yeah, but for any ETF product you have so you're in a product, you've been using it for years, they take care of everything. And now you've just got this little thing on the side. You can just tick and you can put a small percentage into an asset like Bitcoin. The amount of capital that will slosh into that is incredible. We've seen a bull run. Bitcoin goes up $1,000 a day. That's because there's not much of it.
Welcome back to another episode of the Bennett Bergs podcast with your favorite MBA and high school dropout. Everything, crypto business and personal growth. Today we're in person and we're talking about the four year super cycle that happens in crypto, you guessed it, every four years. And we are less than 300 days away, ladies and gentlemen, we are on the countdown. And the four year cycle is very, very important to understand because this is when the bull market historically and you know, in the future gives us a really good indication of when prices are going to increase. And that is coming up very, very soon. Plus we've got so much macro stuff that's happening with BlackRock, one of the largest investment management firms in the world. $9 trillion assets under management have filed for an ETF. Berg's a Bitcoin spot ETF, meaning they're going to buy actual bitcoin if this gets through. There hasn't been a Bitcoin Spot ETF approved in the past, but BlackRock are running at a 99% strike rate on the ETFs. Over 500 ETFs they've gotten through. Plus edX, a new crypto exchange, an absolute game changer coming in, owned by the Banksberg. So the first ever cryptocurrency exchange owned by banks including Fidelity and a couple of other major banks out of the US which is a huge signal they are serving the market to say crypto's here to stay. So exciting times.
That is absolutely incredible. There is so much going on and it's always been a meme where we're like, you know, the big boys are coming, they're going to be here. Then they're literally now it's like literally happening.
Yeah.
Michael Sailor yesterday, Micro Strategy has acquired an additional 12,333 Bitcoin for 347 million at an average price of $28,163 per Bitcoin as of 27th of June 2023. Micro strategy holds 1000. No sorry, 100,333 Bitcoin acquired for 4.52 billion. An average price of about 30 grand.
So right now they're up on their investments is what we're saying. And also I want to put out bergs that we set up buying. We put out an alert. Matt, I had a research and myself put out a post to our members on early December last year. Bitcoin was at $16,000. We put out an alert to say that we thought bitcoin had bottomed and it's time to buy. And bitcoin's currently sitting at US$30,000. So we're up about 80ish percent in six months on that investment.
Amazing.
So look, it's all happening. There is a long way to go though. Definitely you are not too late to the party. In fact we. I was over in Sydney the last few days and we're having some really exciting meetings but there's a lot going on in our. In our world Collective Shift we actually had our best month in May in terms of new users which we're super excited about. We actually beat our best month by about 150%.
Incredible.
So massive, massive shout out to the Collective Shift team. A massive shout out to everyone that's taking action on their portfolio. Because really as we know by the time the bull market comes around, it's too late to have that strategy. You've got to get that shit set up now. And the four year cycle literally comes around every four years.
Exactly. Take advantage of this. You don't want to be waiting for the next four year cycle. Be greedy when others are fearful. We've even had this confirmed by people like Checkmate. So hop on Twitter, look at his stuff. He posts on the collectorshift platform as well. So if you're a member, go and have a look. And all the on chain activity that they saw leading up to the halving and the bull run, they're seeing the exact same thing play out with hard data from the node they are running.
And if you want to know more about the four year cycle and how that sort of occurs, it really is built around the idea of the bitcoin halving. And Burges did a cracking episode. Episode 74. If you haven't checked that out, it's been a really popular episode. Go listen to that. It explains why the four year cycle is in play. And the bitcoin halving. But really Berg's like what's going to happen if this institutional adoption comes in and we get this BlackRock ETF through? It's really going to open up so much money from boomers and retirement funds. So if you think right now there's trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars locked up in these retirement funds similar to superannuation in Australia and a lot of them buy ETFs that, you know, they like that sort of tick of approval that Vanguard etf. Right. That's where they put a lot of their sort of their assets into. Right now for someone that owns a superannuation, sorry, right now anyone that has money in their superannuation or retirement fund can't actually get access to crypto unless they create their own smsf. They actually basically have to go and do on their own. What this will do will allow those retirement funds and massive pools of capital get access to a trusted ETF that physically goes out and buys real bitcoin. Bitcoin right now is half a trillion dollar market cap. BlackRock alone have $9 trillion assets under management. Physical gold is a market cap of 12 trillion. There's 21 trillion alone. Bitcoin's half a trillion. We only need a very small percent just of those two in particular markets to start getting interested in bitcoin, let alone everything else that it's trying to do. And the illiquidity of bitcoin, the supply squeeze is going to happen. There's nothing. So when we talk about supply squeeze, there's actually not that many bitcoin.
It doesn't take much, does it?
There's not enough bitcoin out there for every millionaire in the world to own Bitcoin. Right? 21 million ever made 19 and a half million out there at the moment, probably 20% of it's lost. A lot of it's already been accumulated I think. I don't know the exact supply that's already been accumulated by long term holders. But guess what folks, There's a lot of people out there, including Bugs and I that own a shitload of bitcoin that aren't selling it. There's actually not that many left. Yeah, when we think about it and it's not going to take much for these big boys to start coming in and buying bitcoin for it to be scooped up and things start to move pretty quickly.
Exactly. And you don't have to buy a whole bitcoin. You can buy 5 bucks worth of bitcoin start stacking your sats.
That's great.
So this is exciting for me is when you were talking about super funds and ETFs, a lot of people, they automate their finance. They automate it so it's a direct debit from their account. It goes straight through and it buys an ETF and they dollar cost average over time. And when you talk about super funds, I go into my super fund and it's got these little pie charts, these shitty little pie charts and it's like these are all sanitized investments, they're all funds, shares. And I go to the riskiest category because the riskiest category, guess what? ASX 200. So risky, right? So I put it on that. Can you imagine just that little diagram changing and having just a small allocation like you'll probably have like years on it. You will probably only be able to put less than 1% but you could select bitcoin. And that is not just for super. That's kind of one thing. If it obeys the same regulations and you're able to do it but for any ETF product you have. So you're in a product, you've been using it for years. It's like your bank, it, you know, they take care of everything. And now you've just got this little thing on the side you can just tick and you can put a small percentage into an asset like Bitcoin. The amount of capital that will slosh into that is incredible. And then you think about what it takes to like even the run up we saw now people had to sell. There was, there was some company and they sold their assets, they had to sell it at a market price and it just went up, right. Or that's by the market price, one of the two. And that moved the entire market. And this thing happens so fast. We've seen a bull run. Bitcoin goes up $1,000 a day. That's because there's not much of it. It does not take much there to be a short supply of bitcoin. When people have market buys or when they get margin called or they just want it, the price, price skyrockets.
Yeah, it's, it's super fascinating. And because the biggest problem right now, the reason these bigger funds can't buy bitcoin is because it's, it's very hard to store right? These, these retirement funds, you've got to be able to custody these, this bitcoin. So what the, what the BlackRock ETF is proposing to do is they're actually partnering with Coinbase and Coinbase is going to be the custodian. Plus what the reason a lot of the bitcoin and the, you know, the Winklevoss brothers first applied for a Bitcoin ETF back in 2012. First ETF that was put through. The reason, one of the biggest reasons why they haven't approved it is this idea of a shared surveillance agreement. So basically they're very concerned about that market manipulation. So the BlackRock ETF has a shared surveillance agreement which means that everybody's going to be able to see sort of what's going on. But I don't think blackrock come into the market and do this without having a pretty good feeling that they're going to. Going to get it through.
That's right. I've seen anywhere from like 40 to 80% that people are giving it a chance to go through.
Yeah.
And I think if you had to bet on a horse that was going to succeed, it would be this one.
Yeah.
And you know, with their success rate previously and you wouldn't put something up. Two reasons you do it. One is to send a signal. The other one is if you actually think you're going to get it.
Yeah.
And to be this sophisticated with the way that they've done it and how it's actually structured and what they've agreed to. Amazing. I actually like this because it gives people that don't want to go super deep into crypto an option to buy the crypto. Crypto, yes. You got the surveillance stuff like you do with your shares and obeys the same laws. And hey, eventually if you like it and you understand it and you go deeper, you can self custody that you can choose how you want to play this game.
The other thing as well that's happening in the institutions which is kind of interesting. So FTX is back on the market. Bergs. So there's. There's already been over 300 bids to buy FTX. One of the people, company itself. The company itself and all the assets. Yeah.
Okay. Well to be fair, there will be some assets. Yeah. The tech like so from the traders we've talked to, the tech was the best out there for trading.
Yep.
And then they had the list of the people as well that were actually trading. That's worth money.
Yep. And apparently they've recouped I think somewhere around $7 billion. Yeah. Yeah. So that's interesting. You've also got Fidelity Rumors. Fidelity are actually looking to acquire Grayscale, the largest bitcoin trust, plus Deutsche Bank, Germany's largest bank. Is seeking to add crypto custody service. Plus France's second biggest bank credit. When I butcher this name, Agricole to offer Bitcoin custody. And then you've got edX, the fidelity, Charles Schwab and Citadel Exchange. It is all happening. Plus there's been other ETFs that have come in over the last few days. After the BlackRock, you've also got so BlackRock, $9 trillion assets under management. You've also got Invesco 1.5 trillion and WisdomTreeD, 93 billion assets under management, all filed for an ETF. So, mate, it is gaining traction. It is coming after this.
We're going to the pub. You know what I'm doing?
I'm buying more bitcoin, more bitcoin payment.
You talk to Checkmate and buy more Bitcoin, man.
I've been dealing with Checkmate. I was like, holy shit. Like.
So you had a few dinners out there?
Yeah.
You went to a couple of meetups, you had some business meetings?
Yeah.
How was that on the ground, mate? What is it feeling like outside of crypto, Twitter and outside of the online world?
In the real world? What's it like in the real world?
What is that like?
I don't.
I don't understand it myself. I don't get out of my house.
So it's really good, man. So Friday night I. I was a guest at the Etoro High Net wealth dinner. So this was a dinner for Etoro clients with, I think, minimum 100 to 200k plus. We had a nice little dinner, met some of their clients there, spoke a bit of crypto for a lot of those guys. They're predominantly property and stock investors. They're looking for bitcoin as a bit more of exposure. Don't quite understand it, but a lot of them just want to have it because of the upside. That asymmetric upside, as we've been talking about, so was good. Went to the Upside Dao community meetup. So Upside Dao is a decentralized, autonomous organization. That's the fund. So basically, rather than one individual fund manager making the decisions of where the money goes from an investment perspective, they all share a vote. So it's autonomous, it's a decentralized organization. So that was really cool. Our mate Greg is working there now, so went and supported him. Went to that event and you ripped.
Me about it as well.
Oh, yeah, we ripped you, yeah, we ripped you, yeah.
So this is pretty much a junket event for Ben, right? He's just. He's on there he's got the opera house in the background. He's like sends a photo look at us hard at work. You're doing all but every time I.
Need to give him a bit of lip.
Ah.
And then Monday morning when and met Fred Chabeska. I met. I mean I met him before. We had a little meeting, some. Some cool stuff going on on there which we hopefully be able to share soon with Finder when I met Jonas. So Jonas leads up a big prop trading firm. Actually they're in the top 10 most. So this company you wouldn't have heard of. 120 employees and they basically trade market neutral strategies on crypto. So basically, long story short, they're arbitraging prices between different crypto exchanges. Over 100 to 200,000 trades a day trading I think 1 to 1 something billion dollars of volume per day. Private company investing their own capital. 120 traders, prop traders. So they've got a team that will trade the news, they'll trade ta. They'll trade fundamentals, algorithms. Jonas is a quant trader. This company never heard of. They had a big office. I went up there and saw him and they're. They're big dogs, mate.
Like all these things you never hear of in the crypto game because these guys keep quiet to themselves and they do their thing.
Yeah, they do their thing. So they're just, they're just crushing it. And then had a dinner Monday night with Checkmate and our macro expert Victor, which was a really, really cool little. Really cool. A dinner Glass side of scaled 120 staff. Checkmate with someone like they're. Yeah, they go really hard in the paint. So check out glass date if you're looking for some on chain analysis. Otherwise Checkmate posts a lot of stuff internally. Then I went down the Etoro offices on Tuesday. We're putting together a bit of a partnership there which was excited about. Had a live interview on Oz Biz tv. Went up there and spoke Blackrock News. Mate. I got lost. I got lost. But I foundation.
You didn't even tell me about it. You just sent me a photo on WhatsApp. I'm like glad.
So that was cool. And then did a podcast with the Bamboo guys. So that was cool. That was. Saw them all in person. We sort of spoke about some of the market news and then yeah, had another couple of podcasts. Met the Koinly crew. So the Koinly just crossed a million users on the crypto tax platform, which is phenomenal. So shout out to Koinly. They're just crushing it. And then had the OKX event last night. So OKX is one of the largest sort of Asian exchanges that have come to Australia, mate.
Let's sum up here. So we had. I feel the tides have changed. We had our best month and it was month on month because the previous month was in collective shift. We've got all of these big boys coming in with their ETFs and other facilities to buy crypto. You've got Michael Saylor deploying more capital.
Steady, lads, steady, lads.
And you've just met with a whole bunch of crypto companies and they are all incredibly positive and it is very hard to remain positive in bear market. So they're not bullshitting around. They know something's coming, we know something's coming. Tides have changed.
It's hold onto your hats, ladies and gentlemen. Strap yourself in. If you don't have Bitcoin or crypto in your portfolio, get your shit sorted, book a call with us right now. There's no more time to wait.
Burks don't wait the other four years. Are you serious? Like, it moves faster than the stock market. But are you going to wait another four years for an event that is coming or are you going to capitalize?
And yes, I'm going to push our strategy call because we, we know we can help you. You know you need the help and we want to help you. In the link below collectiveship IO forward slash strategy, you can book a 15 minute console call with either me or our head of, Head of Member Success, where we walk you through, understand where you're at in your crypto journey. What are your challenges? What are your goals? And we help you achieve your goals one on one.
And it's no bullshit. Our goal is literally to get people into crypto and to help people.
Yeah.
And it is about you. It's questions of where are you at? What do you need? Yeah, can we help you? Yes or no?
Yeah. And we're not for everyone. For most people. For most people, we're actually not for you, but we're going to pull you in the right direction. Yeah.
We're not going to bullshit you. Like, we want our members to succeed.
Right.
We want them to have a good experience. Yeah. We don't want high churn or people saying, this wasn't for me and it cost me this amount of money. No, you have to be a good fit.
Exactly. Right. Yeah. Time to get the head in the game. Or if you got your portfolio dusted off, you know you want it, you want to Be figuring it out in this market when it's boring.
Exactly. Now is the time to go through all those altcoins, you got all that ico, all that dust, you know, go through that, rationalize it, get it down to what you need and then work out what your accumulation phase is, or at least your strategy for when things really kick off. Because that is one of the worst things we hear where people are doing really well. They've got a couple of million bucks on paper and they don't know what to do when things get really exciting.
Yeah.
And that couple of million bucks goes all the way down to about 50 grand.
Exactly right. So on this call, we actually help you walk through that, we help you set your strategy, we help you with the confidence, we help you put in the right direction so you can sleep as a night knowing you've got everything set up and you're not worried about the market dynamics. We do the work for you. You can go and execute.
We know this because we have really great feedback. Like we threw this out to the market. People going to want this. Are we crap? Are they like these kind of calls?
Yeah.
And the feedback has been phenomenal. We've seen that through ourselves, but also months on when we feedback with our members and how they were basically nervous wrecks. Yeah. And now they're calm, they know what's going on and they have a plan.
Yeah. And we've done hundreds of these calls now, so don't be afraid. Book a call, there's a link, there's a calendar link, pick a time, phone call, video call, whatever suits you will help you out. And if it's not for you, there's absolutely no stress. We dust our hands off and we go back to whatever else we're doing before.
Don't worry. Yeah, that's cool.
Bullish, though, mate, I think we need to go have a beer and just talk about how much bitcoin need to buy.
We're going to talk bartender into buying.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for listening. If you've got a friend, a family member, a colleague, next door neighbour that's into crypto, that you think this will be valuable to them. We love for you to share this with a friend. Just copy the link, shoot across WhatsApp it to them, tweet at them. This is how we grow the podcast. It's very organic. We're coming up a year doing these podcasts absolutely free for you because we love doing it. We'd love for you to share with your friends how we grow the pod.
Absolutely. And sending this episode because a lot of people would have heard about these ETFs coming. They would have heard about Coinbase, all this kind of stuff. And if they're really into it, a couple episodes back, listen to the halving episode. A mate of mine, jb, told me, and he's like, look, you talk about the halving all the time. I don't know what it is. Why is it important? That goes through it at a really simple explanation. So you can be one of those people that knows what's actually going to happen leading up to April next year.
Yeah. And that's one of the most popular podcasts, so check that out. But everyone, thank you again for listening in. We'll see you next episode.
Thank you. Championship.
