85. Ben Buys $50k of Altcoins, Step-By-Step Strategy Revealed.
8 Aug 2023 · 24 min
Transcript of a Ben and Bergs podcast episode in which Ben Simpson describes buying two altcoins after a two-year pause, and walks through his step-by-step decision process: researching sectors (gaming, layer-2, liquid staking), using the Collective Shift platform to shortlist assets, evaluating token economics and product-market fit, and then formalizing an allocation and written strategy (goals, risk, timeline, assets, sell strategy, automation, psychology) before executing trades. The episode emphasizes disciplined planning, clear sell/exit rules, and using curated research/tools to avoid emotional mistakes in bull markets.

Needed to know how much I'm going to put into these assets, what's my allocation going to be, so I could see my exposure based on the categories of tokens I had in my portfolio. This is where it gets really cool. I plug those numbers back into my dashboards and I end up with the breakdown I wanted. The thing that made this super clear of what my breakdown would be was actually creating that strategy that is such.
Like a path to clarity. Seeing from where you are now, straight through that tunnel right to the end, it is just crystal clear. I could pick up your strategy, you could hand it over to me and I could now execute that for you.
Welcome back to another episode of the Ben and Bergs Podcast. I'm Ben, your favorite high school dropout and CEO of Collective Shift. Alongside me is Bergs, your favorite MBA and COO of Collective Shift, Australia's leading crypto portfolio insights company, providing you with the best analysis and portfolio strategies for crypto investors like you. We're a unique blend of established and the self made, and we're here to break down crypto business and personal growth. But we're not just talking shitburgs, we're giving you the insights you need to make better decisions, build successful businesses and, and level up your life. And today we're talking about two altcoins I bought in the last 48 hours, the first time I've bought new crypto assets in the last two years. And I'm going to walk you through the strategy, what I've done, how I've done it, how I thought about it. So you can take it away and, and do this in your own world, because this has really helped me with my asset selection and really helped clear things up in terms of what I'm trying to do with my crypto investing strategy. So super keen to share that with you today. How are you bs?
I'm doing really well, man. And I'm excited for this episode because it was, well, a few weeks ago where you got the tingle, mate. You got the tingle and then you didn't pull the trigger. I'm like, mate, what's going on? You're like, oh, let me tell you about it. Let me tell you the process that I went through. You started describing it to me and I'm like, bro, this is a pod. Everyone needs to hear this.
It's been a process. So I, I had the tingle probably about a. Well, what would have been. It would have been.
Yeah, maybe even a month.
Yeah. Coming up to the end of financial year and I was Thinking about pulling the trigger. And that tingle is just when I have a sense that, you know, we've hit sort of close to the bottom. Retail investment is really disappeared. Bitcoin dominance was over 50%. And the sectors that I was looking at had really been pumped by the market. And there was still the sec, you know, the hanging around XRP and all the securities. It just, the negativity was really, really bad. And that's usually a decent time to buy. And I've had that tingling feeling before and I haven't executed on it with enough conviction. And this time around, one of my biggest learning lessons was in crypto is that when you have conviction back to self and you know, I made those mistakes in the past when I haven't. And I was like, right this time I'm really going to back myself. So I went down that path of like, okay, well what am I going to buy? There's over, I think on CoinMarketCap, someone's saying there's over 1.2 million cryptocurrencies on CoinMarketCap. Whoa, right. It's just ridiculous. So I started to think about what, you know, what allocations do I have? And my portfolio up until the last few days was primarily bitcoin and Ethereum. And I also had Nexus Mutual, a insurance, you know, defi insurance company. And that was about. It had a little bit of bits of basis, but primarily those three. And I rotated back into Bitcoin Ethereum. Two years ago I sold out all of my alts and took profits because I thought, you know, we were pretty, pretty toppy and you know, it was just time to accumulate Bitcoin Ethereum in the bear market. And alts bleed a lot in a bear market. Most altcoins are down 90, 95% and to dollar cost average and keep buying on the way. Downs are not a great strategy for altcoins who's gonna lose a shitload of money. So I held out and then I started to look at, well, what altcoins I wanted to add to my portfolio and the three sectors that Collective Shift our analyst has been looking at. Gaming Layer two and Liquid Staking. So what I then did is I literally used the Collective Shift platform. And I'm not promoting this because, you know, you should use. I'm just saying that this is genuinely how I did my research. The reason we created collectors in the first place was to help busy people make better decisions. And I'm a fucking busy person and I need someone to help me make better decisions. So I went into the Shift list on the Collective Shift platform, which is a curated list of altcoins which gives you a rating system from very bullish to bullish to neutral to very bearish. And it gives you the sectors and the categories that those assets are in. So I started to look at the most bullish assets in the sectors. I wanted to get exposure and I went a little bit deeper. So one of the assets I was looking at was Lido. Lido is a liquid staking platform and our analysts are actually very bullish on Lido. And I went into Lido and started to read more about it and I ended up deciding not to buy Lido 1 because I totally get the idea of the liquid staking and people wanting to earn a yield on their Ethereum. But for me, like it didn't have enough real world business utility. Like the problem it solved was solving investors being able to get more yield. And I thought it could be a very competitive sector. And I also thought that I don't like staking my Ethereum because I, you know, the risk of staking my Ethereum is too high to get the 6 to 8%. And I want to buy and use products and invest in products that I actually use and genuinely see the value in. So for me, I don't take Ethereum and I want to. And that's, that's why I didn't invest in Lido. But that analysis really helped me, you know, as I went down and read this like, you know, it's very, we're very bullish on LiDAR, for example. It's got extreme strong product market, fits a market leader with a huge head start on its rivals. But one of the bearish sides was likely to concede market share in the short term because it's got a lot of competitors coming up. And that was, you know, one of the, one of the reasons I didn't invest outside of the, you know, the other real world use case. But that really helped me. So then I went a little bit deeper and I was like, okay, well what sectors do I really want to have? And for me, I'm a big fan of Defi. I think Defi is severely underrated. One of our research pieces that we put out last week, Nick put out around why he thought Defi was undervalued. And you look at the market cap of DeFi versus a few other different sectors, for example, meme coins, Meme Coins is just a little bit higher. So a little bit lower total market value than Defi was just ridiculous because many coins are just Meme Coins and DEFI actually provides a reward utility. So I went a little bit deeper into Defi and there was this one token that I've actually bought in the past and made a lot of money on that has gone down significantly because of the pressure on, on the price and the defi sector. So I went to our assets list in the Collective platform and I searched this token. And by the way, everyone, I'm sorry, I'm not, I'm not going to mention the two assets I bought. If you want to know those, you can go and sign up as a member. And I've done a video on it and walk through the two tokens.
So I searched this token on the assets list and I opened up the assets page. And on the, on the assets page you can look at any cryptocurrency and you can see any of the research we've ever done on that particular asset. So over the last few months, we've done a number of research pieces on, including a Pro Monthly Altcoin report we did on this a few months ago. So I opened that up and I looked at what was going on. And one of the things that's stood out to me was that they recently launched a new product offering to diversify its offerings during this, like, low tumultuous period. I was like, okay, these guys are showing signs of like, yes, they're getting battered and bruised by the market, but they're pivoting and finding products that people actually want. And then I saw on Twitter through, through LinkedIn collective shift that they were updating their token economics soon. And then I went back and had a look at some other research and we did another piece recently about, on this that has launched another product. And I loaded up, looked at the website and was looking at the article that came out about this and I started to get.
I guess, that confidence back around, you know, not just investing into a token because you're hoping and dreaming, but you're actually seeing the strategy that the founders are putting in. And this is actually a surrounding company. And I've done a lot of research on before because I did own it.
So then what I did is I was like, okay, I've shortened my watch list to that. I had another one on my list which was Alluvium and Immutable X. And I was really bullish on Immutable X. I thought it was, and I still think it's a great project.
And then our analyst team put out a research report on Immutable X the other day. And this is where things really started getting interesting. So again, I use the cliff shift platform because if I go on YouTube I know I'm just going to get all sorts of random content from people. I've got no idea. They're posting all sorts of garbage that you have no idea who they are and they're probably being paid to promote it. So I went and had a look at immutable X and one of the things that, you know, in the bearish case of the immutable X was around the token economics and this was the thing that.
Basically changed my decision that I was going to buy. And this was around the idea of unclear token economics and the research report he said IMX token economics leave a lot to be desired. It's been repositioned as a utility token and has many benefits as the fees that get paid to imx. But the biggest concern is that the immutable company or platform could succeed. But it's still unclear how IMX can capture the same level of success. Because buying imx, the token does not equal ownership in the company. That's a really important point, right? So many tokens in the cryptocurrency space, yes they are token, but they don't necessarily equate to a percentage ownership of the business and also doesn't equate that all the value goes through the token. For example, XRP and Ripple, people think that all the stuff that's happening with Ripple is amazing, but the XRP token itself doesn't accrue all the value. Right. So the token economics is a super important part. And there's a lot of supply still to come out. On the, on the IMAX token, I think there's still 50% of the supply is going to enter the market in 2026. So 50% of the supply still is to come out, which is a lot.
You're getting diluted on something that's not even equity. It's just a small portion of the value chain and it probably won't even accrue the major part of the value of the company, literally.
Now, on the other side of that, a lot of cryptocurrencies tend to run on narratives, especially when retail investors come in. So I think this definitely gets a narrative play for sure. But I don't want to rely on just narratives when investing. I should want to have a fundamental token that I believe in. So I crossed off the list, thanks to this report of collective ship like it was. I was like, okay, great, that's it, I'm out. And it Was so easy once I read that. So then I came down to layer two scaling solutions and a big. I've got a big favorite on my. Because it actually uses real world businesses. I didn't even really need to read the report. I skimmed through like, yep, done. I mean I've been in for that for a long time when I have exposure to this other asset. And I looked at some of the other things I had. One was another DEFI project that Matt posted about that's already up 500%. He posted this on February for Cliche members. And I kind of feel as though the market cap of that right now is a lot higher than where you know, I mean, yes, it could run higher, but the risk to reward ratio just doesn't make sense for me right now. So I had down to 2. I went from 5 tokens down to 2. And then what I did is I went into my dashboard because I needed to know how much I want to put into these assets, right? What's my allocation going to be? So went into my dashboard and I played around with my asset selection in my dashboard which gave me an automated asset allocation not only from an investment lens, but from an asset category so I could see my exposure based on the categories of tokens I had in my portfolio. And this is where it gets really cool because what I then did is I could play around with what this would look like on how much Bitcoin I would have sold or how much defeat I wanted to put in or, you know, how much I wanted to buy. These two tokens I went across to Uni Swap and played around with how much it would actually be, the slippage. And then I plugged those numbers back into my dashboard so I could get a feel for, you know, what the breakdown would be. And I end up with the breakdown I wanted. So I wrote that down. And the thing that made this super clear of what my breakdown would be was actually creating that strategy. We talk about having a strategy for so much so long, right? And we teach this to our members. But I hadn't updated my strategy. So what I literally did was I put out a notion document and I wrote my strategy. And I'm keen to share with that.
With you, Bergs, because, man, I'm excited to hear it.
This is kind of like, this is what made it all clear to me of like the allocation because like, do you put in $100,000 but do you put in $10,000? Do you buy it all now? Do you dollar cost average? Like what are you doing and it's really hard to know that unless you have your goals and your strategy lined out. So the number one thing in creating a crypto strategy is having it writing down your goals. So there's seven components. There's goals, risk, timeline, assets, sell, strategy, automation, psychology. That's what we teach to our members. The first one is your goals. What is your goal? For me, it's to exit insert number of cash into my bank after tax to put X amount in my bank account and Y amount to buy a house for my mom and dad. And in quotes, he actually gets something out of my crypto investments like that. That's what I want to do. I want something tangible. That was my goal. The risk is high for me. I want to make the majority of my wealth I plan on making is from collective shift, not my crypto investments. Anything that I make through crypto is bonus. If I lose it, it's gonna suck. But it is what it is. Now, it's not that I've got a small amount of money, I've got a decent chunk of money in crypto, but for me, I'm not all in on trying to make my money in crypto. I've got other investments and other business like the business I'm building, which is going to, that I plan to build my wealth from. So my risk appetite is high. My timeline is the next bull market to the next two to three years, right? I want to achieve my goal in the next bull market. So then what I did is I wrote out the assets and I looked at price targets. I tried to look at where I think the targets could be for this next bull run. And I think bitcoin could get to 150,000 in the next cycle. And Ethereum.
I don't know, somewhere between 5 and 10k.
And then I have my other two old coins that I have my price targets to then as well. Then I have my sales strategy. So at what price would I sell my bags at? So at the targets I wrote down, I'm going to sell 50% on those targets and each 20% increase on top of these old coins, I'm going to sell a another chunk starting at 10%, 20%, 30% of the 50% I have remaining. And that works the way up. So then what I did is I calculated there what that would look like if I hit my price targets and I sell that percentage, what fiat price I would get to. And that had to match my goal, right? Because if it doesn't meet your goal, what you know what on Earth are you doing? Right. Doesn't make sense. So that all met my goal. That was like, okay, well then I know what price I want to sell at. I know how much I'm going to make. Now I need to know how I'm going to get it out. So I have my strategy of the automation. So my automation is to take my assets from my ledger onto uni swap into sell those assets for eth with each pair straight to my crypto exchange and then interfere. Right. That's the automation wrote it out clear, concise. And my psychology is that I'm not trading. Yes, I do like a multi year swing trade, but I'm not a trader and I wanted to make it clear that this is my goal because in a bull market you're wasting to make more money. But writing out this goal is going to be the difference for me because most people just go through and just have no idea and never sell. It's because they don't write out their strategy. So I did that and I made everything clear Burgs, I lined that up in my portfolio. I went across the uni swap, I executed.
And I'm in the market.
So good. That is such like a path to clarity. I could pick up your strategy, you could hand it over to me and I could now execute that for you. And I really think it's like people will come in, they'll see a token, they'll see something like let's pick on XRP. This is going to $20, I'm going to 20x my money, whatever it is and you know I'm going to be rich. Great. First of all, how is that going to happen? And then with 20x, what is with the tokenomics? How much are you going to be diluted? What would the market cap actually have to be? Is that realistic and what is it part to get there? And really what you've done is you've gone for more clarity. Like what are you doing and why are you doing this and what do you do when you win? You know and how do you win? Like what is winning to you? And really money is just a tool to help you improve your life. And you've gone from I've got the tingle mate, I've got the tingle. I want these four alts to then going okay, I want them. But that's not good enough. We need to get more sophisticated. Let's go and do the research. So you went in, you went on the platform, you researched all of these coins, you looked deeper into their products and then you're like, okay, there's two that don't really align with what I want, and these two are way ahead of where I want to be. So then you go into the dashboard, you add those two to your portfolio, and then you see that little pie chart and go, okay, which sectors am I allocated to? Okay, we need to move this around. Great, I'm more comfortable with this allocation. And then you're like, okay, if this is my allocation, my specific goals are, I want X amount of dollars in X period of time to then have a tangible thing, which is give my parents money to buy a house. And then you go one step further and you're like, okay, if that's true, what would the prices of the assets need to be? What would that timeframe likely be? And then the next step is, okay, when am I going to take profits? But not only that, some people go that far, Some people, maybe the 1% of people go that far, they forget that last little thing. How do I exit? So Ben actually showed me his strategy and I added that little thing for him. I'm like, that's great. But when the time comes and that day hits, what are you actually doing? He's like, fuck. And he's like, I'll just do this.
This is.
And I'm like, no, no, no. You want the easiest off ramp, because your bank might change, your exchange might change. You might want to move into a stable and then move it across so you don't get any slippage. And Ben's like, no, no, no. I'm going to sell to ETH because that's the best pair. I'll get the best price. It's the fastest I can move ETH to any exchange and. And transfer it to fiat. And that seeing from where you are now straight through that tunnel right to the end, it is just crystal clear on your ability to execute. Man, I'm proud of you.
Thanks, man. I mean, this was so, to be clear, I did this in the last bull market, and that was the only reason that I was able to win, because the first bull market I beat, I was in, you know, six, seven years ago. I didn't. I didn't sell because it had a strategy, and I learned from that. So the last bull market I got into, you know, a lot of the metaverse projects before the metaverse really ran up and made it made a really decent chunk of coin. But I only did that because I had the price targets I was going to sell at, and I actually executed. So when I say that most people don't make money Crypto, it's because they don't have a plan. And, and in a bull market, it's so wild, it's so emotional, it's so euphoric that you just don't want to sell. And I guarantee if you don't have a plan, you're most likely going to lose because you won't sell. And having this strategy printed out, saved, whatever, tangible, so, you know, execute is the difference of winning and losing.
And I really like the way you've laid this out. This is a good plan, like you've got and you've executed and you've bought the assets. You could hand that plan over to anyone and they would be able to execute for you.
Yep, yep, exactly right.
That is what a good plan is.
Yep. And yeah, we, we, we now have been rolling this out without a lot of our members, Collective Shift. So this is actually one of the things you get in your pro membership, so you get to sit down with our Head of Member Success, Leon, and we help you create that strategy. We go through this process. So if you're in crypto right now, you're listening this and you don't have this sorted, I highly, highly, highly recommend getting it sorted. And if you need help, that's exactly what we do at Collective Shift. We sit down with you, we help you create that strategy. You get access to the dashboard, you get access to all of our research, you'll get access to see what I've just bought, get all the insights and analysis to help you actually build a proper portfolio and navigate this market with a team of people that actually know their shit and not, not trying to sell you crappy investments, which most people follow online and up, down 50% of their portfolio. So.
And we keep building out this platform because we have these problems. We learn cycle after cycle and we keep improving it and reducing the steps needed, the manual amount of mental energy, and you doing it yourself because we need these tools ourselves. And I remember back to the meetup that we had Ben, and we had so many guys that I've known online that have been in the group or moderators or from other groups, and they're like, yeah, man, I held this token. I was like a paper, like multimillionaire. And all of a sudden they're down 90% and they're like, I'm like, but you could have cashed out, you could have bought a house. You could have done this as I coulda, coulda, coulda. And the whole thing about this is Ben and I We want to win and we want people to win as well. Right? We want everyone to win. I don't want you to be the person that sitting at your computer watching everything go up, talking about how rich you are, looking at boats and houses, all that sort of nonsense and not having a plan to actually take that money, use that money as a tool and live out your dreams and achieve your goals. Do not be that person. Get it right, have a plan. So when that bull market comes around, you know what to do.
And it was everyone. And when you work in crypto full time, we've been in the darkest of days of a bear market. So just come out of a two year bear market. This doesn't come around every, every often. Literally comes out every four or five years and that's coming up next year. It's, we can't say anything else. It's actually your fault if you don't take it up anymore. Like, you know, I'm done.
Like, like, we've seen it so many times. This is the only cycle that continues to repeat and it's the only thing that most people don't talk about is, is actually having a proper plan and strategy and getting your information from the right sources. Like that's just the reality of. And we're building this for ourselves. Or that there was, yeah, the whole process of me buying these two investments. I literally used all of our analyst stuff on the platform.
I remember how much, mate? Probably like, oh, couple years ago. Years to complain because you're like, we don't fucking have this. Like, I have to go over here, I have to go over there, I have to think about, I have to do it manually.
I've listened to these other idiots, why.
Don'T we have this? And now we're actually in a position where we can serve ourselves and we don't have to do all of that. It's actually incredible that we've got to this point.
Yeah, I love it. It's, that's, it's, it's truly, I'm truly, truly grateful that we've been able to build something that genuinely well, at the end of the day, helps, helps me.
It'S useful, it's easy to do. Like when you build something useful, you put it out in the world and you're like, yeah, I made that. It's actually helping people. And yet you see the results and they're telling us how much has helped them and what we've done for them. That is an incredible feeling.
Totally great. So look guys, if you, if you're keen, just even have a discussion around it. We offer 15 minute complimentary consultation calls, like a strategy call. 15 minutes. We'll go through your goals, go through your challenges, see if we can help. We're not for everyone and it's absolutely no obligations up. It's not for you. We'll put in the right direction if it is for you. You know, we'll show you what the, what the membership looks like. It's completely up to you if you want to take it up or not. But I highly recommend jumping on one of those calls. There's a link in the description below. You can just Google Collective Shift. In the top right hand corner there's a schedule your consult button, click that, find it's on the calendar, lock it in and just have a, just have a chat at the very least, because this generally helps. And if you don't have that strategy. If you're not thinking about this right now, it's probably time to.
And if you're listening to this podcast, because this happened to me where I listened to a bitcoin podcast a long time ago and this was before I bought bitcoin and the way these people were, were talking, I missed it. And then I missed another opportunity as well. If you're listening to this and you're. You're in crypto and you're listening about crypto when no one else knows about it or knows how to buy it or even explain it, think about how far ahead you are now. Now accelerate your journey and get it right. So when you start buying, or if you've already bought something, beyond the other side and be prepared. Just remember this moment and this opportunity and don't let it slide because you will regret it when the bull market comes. Do not be that person. I'm trying to save you another market cycle here or maybe two market cycles until you learn that lesson. Like it took me two market cycles.
Yeah. Great call, Bergs. Thank you everyone for listening. If you found this episode valuable or you have a friend, family member, we'd love for you to share it with them. Get them this strategy. Hopefully this has been helpful so you can actually take in and implement some of this. It's how we grow the podcast by sharing around. So thank you for listening and burgs. I'll see you next episode.
See you then. Thanks so much. Champions.
