Ben Simpson discusses his investment in the DeFi token Maple, explaining why he accumulated the token over 2–3 years (rising total value locked and growing protocol revenue despite a small market cap). He describes price movement this year — around $0.30 in April, a dip to $0.06 after news tied to Trump, then a run to a peak near $0.63 about a month before the recording — and his conviction-driven accumulation during the dip. His profit-taking rule is two-part: (1) start taking profits when an asset approaches a 10x move or hits mainstream attention, and (2) realize gains to fund personal goals. He sold 33% of his altcoin allocation at $0.43 to buy his parents a property, is still holding roughly two-thirds of his Maple position, and has resumed buying during a new accumulation range.

This is a breakdown of my top performing coin this cycle, Maple. I bought Maple over the last two or three years because it is a big defi project that I felt was going to be a huge winner if we got the narrative behind Defi. Now, defi has been slammed over the last two or three years, but what continued to show for me in Maple was the total value locked inside the protocol continued to grow. In fact, it grew into the hundreds of millions, into the billions of value locked in the Defi project, where the market cap was still very, very small. When you see projects that have big value locked inside, which means there's a lot of people depositing to that project, but price hasn't moved, for me, that's a big indicator that there is a price differentiator on where the project's at. And not only that, it started to really generate more revenue as more people deposited in and that find that found its way back in the token. So back. This is only the start of this year. In April, Maple was back around $0.30, dive to $0.06 back on the back of Trump's news. And this is where I really accumulated really heavily because I had that conviction. This is where most people panic and sell. But I doubled down because I had conviction, because I knew the asset, I knew the fundamentals, I knew the narratives and the token economics. And over literally a four month run, it peaked at 63 cents literally about a month ago. Now, my profit taking strategy is two parts. Whenever something does a 10x right or is on the way to a 10x, that is a big sign for me that the profit needs to start to be taking. It started to hit the mainstream. Twitter was starting to talk about it, people were starting to talk about it. It was no longer a hidden gem. That for me was a profit taking point. So at 43 cents, I took 33% off of my altcoin allocation and put that into a goal of mine which was to buy my parents a property. And that's happening right now, which I'm really excited about. So it was two parts taking profits when something is going up so fast, very quickly and hitting the mainstream, but also to help me achieve the goals. Now I'm still holding 2/3 of my portfolio in Maple, but recently I started to accumulate again. We found a good accumulation range here and again the bull market's in full gear, so I don't want to get rid of everything. So I bought back in here, sold out to achieve my goals and now hoping that Maple continues to rise up and that is my profit taking strategy so far.
