Everything You Need to Know About Crypto Investing in 2026

In this 2026 YouTube presentation, Ben Simpson (founder of Collective Shift) delivers a comprehensive, market‑focused playbook for crypto investing. He begins by describing the current risk‑off environment—sharp sell‑offs across stocks, metals, AI, and crypto—emphasizing that traditional investment playbooks no longer apply. Simpson contrasts the 2026 cycle with prior cycles (e.g., the 2021 metaverse boom), arguing that each cycle’s leading sectors and token winners differ. He attributes the present downturn to macro forces (new Fed chair, high U.S. debt, pending Clarity Act, and heightened institutional de‑risking) and to the fallout from influencer‑driven meme‑coin mania in 2025. The core of his strategy centers on fundamentals: revenue generation, sound tokenomics, and supply‑demand dynamics. He highlights two case studies—HyperLiquid, a derivatives protocol generating $1 billion annual revenue with only 11 staff, and Syrup, a DeFi protocol with strong product‑market fit—as exemplars of revenue‑driven value. He warns against “relief rallies” that trap investors during bear‑market pullbacks and stresses the importance of waiting for a structural shift before allocating to altcoins, treating Bitcoin and altcoins as distinct asset classes. Regulatory outlook is pivotal: the upcoming Clarity Act (≈75‑85 % chance of passage) is framed as the key catalyst for broader institutional participation, with examples such as BlackRock’s investment in Uniswap and hiring sprees at Amex, Mastercard, and PayPal. Simpson also flags the emerging AI‑crypto intersection, where autonomous agents could leverage blockchain for financial services. Finally, he shares his own track record—averaging 116 % YoY growth over six years by entering high‑fundamental projects during market lows—and promotes Collective Shift’s research services, offering one‑on‑one strategy, events, and data access to sophisticated investors. The presentation concludes with a call to action for viewers to engage with his firm and suggest future topics.

Sentiment hasn't felt this bad in crypto in a long, long time. Risk off investments are across the board. Stocks are selling off, precious metals are selling off, AI is on the rise, tech stocks on the decline, and crypto is in a correction. The old playbook of investing in any market right now you need to throw out the window, particularly in crypto. I've been in this space now for nine years. Crypto moves very, very fast, but I've never seen the pace of innovation at the speed that we are now. So I'm going to break down exactly where investors are going wrong, the mistakes they're making and my exact playbook for investing in the crypto in 2026 and how I'm looking to grow my portfolio. Here's the first thing I'm going to say about the market that we're in right now. It is no longer playing out like any other cycle I've seen before. The game has completely changed. And what you need to understand for how this cycle is playing out compared to previous cycles is that there is a big difference on why this market is moving higher and lower and what altcoins are winning versus not. I remember back in 2021 I was very heavy in the metaverse is where I made a lot of my money. The sector was growing. We had, you know, the metaverse land. We had Metaverse toke, we had everything. Do you remember that Facebook renamed a meta and everyone thought we were going to live in the metaverse? That was the, the biggest state of play in that time. And actually went back to have a look at the historical prices of Crypto back in 2022. Look at some of these coins. Cardano, XRP, Terra, Luna, Polkadot, Avalanche, Polygon. And then you go right back to 2017. Look at these top coins. Litecoin, Dash, Neo, Nemonero. Point being folks, is that every single cycle plays out and the tokens that are in the limelight, the technology that is at the time and is the most exciting part and you know, Metaverse is nowhere to be seen now. Most of these tokens are down 80, 90%. Luckily I was able to take profits. I made, you know, pretty life changing amounts of Money back in 2021. But the point I'm trying to make here folks is that what plays out in each cycle is different in comparison to previous cycles. And really what's driving this cycle right now and where we are and why these sell offs have occurred is really based on a couple of things. One is that the macro factors of not only crypto but broader than just crypto, the macro financial landscape is in a bit of a freefall. There's a lot of uncertainty. We've had a new Fed chair. There's a lot of obviously debt in the system in the U.S. particularly the U.S. regulation around crypto. Still, we're waiting for the Clarity act to be passed, but we've had a lot of institutional adoption. But institutions just like retail investors have played into this big sell off. All right, if we look at the charts, we had this big cascading sell off not that long ago. Probably one of the sharper sell offs we've seen in crypto in a long, long time. Why is that? Well, we had these hedge funds, these big institutions that were buying ETF owners. They de risked just the same as retail investors. And what happens when institutions de risk is they're obviously selling a lot more. And it created this liquidation pattern. And you know, we're now heading back towards that 200 week moving average, the sort of value area we've been talking about. But the next sector and these next assets and sectors that are going to be moving into this next leg up is going to be different based on the sectors that we're looking at and the fundamentals of those projects. I want to talk about that now as to what projects we believe are going to be, you know, the ones to invest in out of this value area. Before I do that, I just want to share a little bit around how, you know, in 2025, Trump came in and it was the time for crypto to shine. Right. You know, it was, sorry, the end of 2024, Trump came in, but you know, Trump was pushing crypto as the home of crypto. It was going to be the thing that pushed crypto forward. And what it's turned into is actually crypto becoming politicized ahead of the midterm elections. And actually it's been turned into a bit of a joke. I remember the Trump coin that came out. One of our clients actually he got in, I think about $6 got out at 96 made, you know, something like 120,000 doll. That was back in the meme coin mania of early 2025. And since that point, all of these tokens have sold off. We had influencers promoting everything. We actually looked at some of the influencer promotional period that sparked so much debate in 2025. This is one of the reasons I started my company, Collective Shift and independent research companies, because so many of these projects that people buy into when you look at crypto, YouTube are paid tokens paid projects that people put out, they sign non disclosure agreements and then the retail was just the exit liquidity. This happens time and time again. It happened with Trump Coin, it happened with all these different influencer coins. Remember the Hawk tour girl, you know, came out and rug pulled everyone. Like literally so many of these tokens came and went. And now that liquidity is being sucked out of the market. If we look at the others, which is the altcoin market cap outside of the top 10, it's just been a massive, massive like sell off over the last, you know, little period. If we go back to like, you know, maybe the last 12 months, the altcoin index is down 35. And that's really important because you know, from a fundamental perspective over the last 12 months, this was a research piece I put out recently. Two of the projects that we invested into again that were bullish on was Hyper Liquid and Syrup. All right, and Hyper Liquid is a derivatives protocol. It generates, generates $1 billion of annual revenue with 11 full time contributors. All right, that is wild. Let that sink in for a second. A $1 billion annual revenue with 11 full time contributors. How is that possible? Because of blockchain. That is where blockchain is so exciting. Same with Syrup. You know, this is a defi protocol that I've been investing for a long time. Took profits out late middle of last year because it is a strong fundamental project and these have like way outperformed the others index which is down 35, even Bitcoin. So the point being is that these projects, you know, Hyperloop wasn't around in 2021. You know, syrup was around in 2017. What we invest into, into this, these next altcoins will be different again. And that is a big part that I spoke about in this post here is like revenue is a signal. But what really matters right now is the next altcoins. The next investments may not even exist yet. And that's what happened in the metaverse. All right, no one even speaks about the Metaverse anymore. You have to update your strategy. What worked in previous cycles does not work now. The other thing that people get sucked into before we talk about those altcoins is that people are falling for these relief rallies. All right, I spoke about this the other day on our platform around, you know, bitcoin continuously in bear markets creates these emotional traps. All right, what happens here if we look back in, you know, 2021, if I take off the others side, is that we have these, you know, in downwards periods we have these Relief rallies. All right, and these are the relief rallies that people get sucked into. You see here on the way down from 2000, the peak of 20, 21, we have this little pump here, Bitcoin pumps, you know, nearly 30%. All right. In this little relief rally, people get sucked in, they think the market's back and then bam, dumped again. All right, Here, right down to the bottom. Gets sucked in, up 35%, bam, down again. And that is bitcoin. Altcoins get hurt even more. The thing is, do not get sucked into these relief rallies. That's what I see every single cycle. You can lose a lot of capital by chasing these different projects. Yes, there are altcoins and sectors that, you know, you want to be adding to your watch list. But altcoins are a leverage position to Bitcoin. If Bitcoin is going sideways or down, altcoins will bleed out a lot further. So for us, it's about watching the structure closely and watching for the structure to change and move to the upside before getting into the altcoin positions. Otherwise you're going to get absolutely wiped out. So don't get sucked into these relief rallies until the market structure changes. Right. So, you know, the traps, why and what are we waiting for before we start adding capital in? So these areas that we're looking at to add capital in, I see time and time again people get sucked into influencers and FOMO and people getting excited to get into early. Now, I want to make sure you guys know the way I think about it and why we think about a collective shift is Bitcoin and altcoins are two separate asset classes. Bitcoin for me, is the best asset on the planet. I believe it's going to the hundreds of thousands of dollars in the future. And I believe bitcoin, you know, accumulating this value area, you know, is a great time to be accumulating long term. But if you're waiting for the structure, it's all about your risk to reward. The two things that we're looking at. One is the Clarity Act. All right, Clarity act is a time of recording close to, you know, 75%, 85% probability that it gets approved. Think about this as like the framework for, you know, institutions to actually invest and allow Bitcoin and crypto in the legal way. For so many years, you know, financial advisors haven't been able to advise people to buy Bitcoin. Very few issuers of ETFs can actually get involved and buy and allow ETF issuing for their clients. What we're seeing is we're seeing institutional adoption trying to front run this Clarity act. All right? We saw recently blackrock literally just invested into Uniswap, a defi player. We're seeing, despite these, you know, downwards periods and sideways movements, institutions are the ones that understand now is the time to get moving. We're seeing, you know, Amex, MasterCard, PayPal, look at these hires for crypto teams, all right? Likely in anticipation of the Clarity act being passed. Those are the two major things, and then also the crypto being politicized. But the big piece we're looking here is waiting for that Clarity act to come. You know, if the midterms, depending on how they play out, you know, we're seeing the Democrats really go against crypto. Like, you know, crypto being politicized has not played out well for Bitcoin. But, you know, the Genius act and the Clarity act will allow both of these parties to come together and start to push forward on an institutional level. And that is a big adoption curve that I believe will, you know, bring us back out of this accumulation period. Now, in terms of the old coins and what are the things we're looking at? You know, we're not looking at hype. Not hype, liquid. So I'm talking about hype. We don't want to buy into fomo. We want to look at the fundamentals. This is a core part of our research, is looking at revenue as a signal. Just like any other business, a crypto project needs to derive value to the world. How is it generating demand? Right. Very simply, revenue is a strong indicator of product market fit. Revenue matters. All right, but we also need to look at token economics. We need to look at genuine economic demand. We need to look at other factors outside of just, you know, revenue. What are those things? Well, if we look at something like hyperliquid, one of the reasons that I'm excited about hyper Liquid, it's a very strong fundamental project. It's up 36% over the last 30 days. Way outperformed the entirety of the market. If we look at hype against Bitcoin, as an example, if we bring that over this chart, even if we go to the last. Where are we last month or so, you know, Bitcoin down 23%. Hyper got up 20%. Why is that? Well, because it generates real value, real revenue back to the token holder. All right? And it recently announced even more buybacks. What happens is hyper liquid generates revenue. It goes back and buys the token. Really strong token economics with product Market fit. It's got the hyper liquid liquidity pool that basically allows more buyers and issuers of the hyper liquid token to accrue across the token. The platform fees that it generates goes back to the token, has burning mechanisms and the token unlocks are better than a lot of altcoins. A lot of people don't realize that altcoins have new supply that comes into creation just like fiat currency. And if you don't have the demand, well then guess what, the supply is increasing. What's going to happen? Basically supply economics showcase that's going to go down just like fiat currency. So there's a big shift here for me, you know, moving towards these fundamentally strong projects. The area that I'm really interested in is the AI and crypto sector Director of research Matt just posted about this a couple of days ago. Around, you know, these sectors of AI agents, you know they are looking for protocols to interact and trade and be able to build financial ecosystems. On blockchain is the best way to do that. AI agents can't go on KYC on Coinbase, right? This could be the zero to one moment. So AI fundamentally strong projects. These are the areas that I'm most excited about. I'm not deploying any new capital into altcoins just yet, but when that structure changes, as we know that rally out of these dips like we saw early last year in the, in the tariffs sell off of April we saw a big sell off. And that momentum out of those big dips is ginormous for altcoins. If you're in the right altcoins on the way back out, you know, watch out because that's where you can really make a lot of money. Money is not made in the bull markets, they're made in these sell offs. This is where the sophisticated investors like the institutions are, you know, allocating and it's where a lot of other people, you know, panic and get scared and leave. All right, so this dip here, all right, we saw bitcoin from top to bottom. This was the peak of the tariff sell off, right? The big fear. And then you overlay the others market cap on the other side of this we had this big sell off, all right. And then we had fundamentally strong projects really rally out of that. The rally out of those lows and is so much stronger for altcoins because they're far less liquidity in them. Just some of them move downwards. When there's illiquidity and there's cell pressure, they can move very, very fast down. Same on the upside. That's why timing matters a lot more in these sell offs, in these corrections. One of the core principles, as I mentioned, is fundamentally strong projects like these tokens. This is where I made all of my money in crypto. Right. If we look at over here, this is our proven portfolio performance review of the last six years. This is audited. I've averaged 116% year on year growth over the last six years. And that's because of getting into projects during these periods when there's not a lot of attention and the market's down. All right, the biggest tokens that I made money on, Ethereum and 80 bucks syrup got into 5 cents. You know, pipe did extremely well. There's so many of these projects that you know, again you don't buy when the market's pumping. You're buying exit liquidity if you're getting there when the market's up. So these periods of times when we're getting these softs is the best time to get involved. If you're interested in the research we put out and becoming one of our clients and you know, seeing how we work with our sophisticated investors and getting access to this data, we work one on one with all of our clients and do strategy in person, events, etc. I'll put a link in the description below. You can check it out, but we'll continue on. So it's really important to make sure that you're looking in the on chain data, you're looking at what's actually happening below the surface, what's happening to the tokens behind the scenes, what's the unlocks, and looking at exactly what the value of the token is, not just buying on speculation and fomo. Those days are gone. Right now you cannot rely on these old coins to come back from the ashes based on no fundamentals, no one using them. There may be a point in time in the future where that comes back, but for now it's about protecting the portfolio, protecting the capital and ensuring that you're investing based off where we are in the structure and buying during these value periods. So if you're interested in seeing how we work with clients and you want to apply to work with us, I'll put a link in the description below. You can check out everything about how we work with our clients. Otherwise, thank you so much for listening and if you like this video, just leave me a comment of what you want to cover next and I'll see you on the next one.
