Here's How I'd Invest $50,000 in Crypto Today (Research-Backed)

Ben Simpson (crypto researcher) explains how he would deploy $50,000 in crypto today, presenting a five-step framework for asset selection, portfolio allocation, and deciding when to sell legacy or low-quality altcoins. He emphasizes a long-term, wealth-creation orientation (heavy Bitcoin core position), selective exposure to next-gen layer-1s (Solana, SUI), some exposure to ETH and DeFi (Syrup/Maple), plus a small risk-on sleeve (AI, gaming, memecoins). He also gives a checklist for evaluating old coins, tax/loss-harvesting notes, and behavioral guidance on selling.

How would I invest $50,000 into crypto today? I've just put together a presentation to help you really think about the strategy and research backed insights on the asset selection, portfolio allocation and also ways to think about if you already have a bunch of old coins and are already allocated in your portfolio, how to think about getting out of some of those coins if you think you should do that or whether you should hold and buy more. I've got a bit of a framework which I'm going to walk you through today. I'm really excited about today's video. As I mentioned, I have put a lot of time and effort into these slides. Really the three key things I want you to walk away with today is how how I would break down my 50k portfolio allocation again. It doesn't matter if you have no allocation or no portfolio or if you already have everything invested. I'm going to share with you how to think about reallocating, how to think about whether to get rid of those shitty altcoins. I'm going to go through the research for each coin as well. This is not just a channel where I just throw up a bunch of random altcoins to go and tell you to sign up on my my buy bit links. I run Australia's leading crypto research company. We're completely independent. I've been full time investing in the space for eight years and I love helping other people because if I help other people make money, I get paid and we can all win. That's exactly how this works. I don't do affiliate links, don't do paid promotion. I really want to share with you, the team and I and our research to help you absolutely crush this bull market. And I want to talk through the five step framework that I utilize and have used over my time investing in crypto to think about and evaluate how to optimize those assets that you hold and whether or not you should get rid of, you know, investing in some of those sectors. So I ultimately the three reasons why I think most investors fail really back to strategy, not thinking about how you're investing, portfolio allocation, when to get out. You're just shooting from the hip, reacting emotionally to the market. We went through this multi month down period of the last sort of three or four months ever since Trump got inaugurated and we saw so much fear in the market. I was getting messages Ben, should I throw throughout the market, Should I be selling everything? Should I be going to stables? Is the four year cycle over? Really buying into the fear that was, that was around and I think, you know, even something like Solana Wicked down to like $90. Yeah, $94 back on back in April. That was only a month ago, right. And that was a peak fear. I had a lot of messages, whether it be our clients or from the public going, Ben, you know, I'm very scared, I'm very worried of round trip out of the cycle. And peak fear hit around that sort of mid April mark. And we've bounced massively since then. If you look at the wick on Solana, I mean we're up, you know, 65% in a bit over a month. Right. So a lot of these altcoins are bounced. As I mentioned, we're kind of pretty broken out of this multi year, multi month downtrend. I think a lot of that fear is behind us from a macro standpoint. The stock market started to recover and we're really seeing that crypto hold up really, really strong in my opinion. Bitcoin, if we look at its correction over the last few months, like probably 35%, I think we got down to some cycles in previous bull markets, only 32%. Bitcoin's going down 50, 60, 70%. And the fact that we didn't go down that far considering all the tariff wars and uncertainty is super positive. So now that we're in this breakout, we sort of consolidating back above this multi month downtrend back in April to where we are now. I wanted to talk through more about how I would invest right now. I have been allocating and I have been investing and I want to share that with you today. Exactly my insights and strategies and the assets we're going to buy. But before that I can come and do this video and you know, I'm going to, I'm going to do it as if it was me. But really you're all in different boats and I don't want to, you know, make this a wish you washy video. It's really going to be practical, but ultimately you need to understand why you're in crypto in the first place, right? Like why are you in here? Is it for income? Is it for cash flow? Is it for diversification? Is it for wealth creation? Are you trying to make a million bucks, you know, overnight? What is it? Right, because what I'm going to share with you and how I'm investing is probably different to you. You know, where I think about crypto and my goals and objectives is really wealth creation. But I think long term and I think bitcoin and a number of Assets in the crypto space are some of the assets, best assets in the world you can invest in. But I'm not one to chase, you know, small cycles. I'm not one to chase, you know, trading. I don't do trading. I'm not here for, you know, know, overnight quick wins. I'm really here to build long term considerable wealth. And I made a lot of money back in the metaverse before the metaverse was really a thing. I invested very heavily before Facebook renamed to meta because that fundamental research, the on chain analysis, the token economics that we look at gave us an edge and that is our edge in the market. You know, it's not ta. A lot of people can do TA can draw squiggly lines so the cows come home. But that's not going to give you the assets and undervalued assets. That's going to give you the real growth in your portfolio. So with that being said, you know, also understanding your risk tolerance and your time horizon is super important. A lot of people may be investing in this, their retirement funds or smsf. You're not going to pump a bunch of money into high risk assets. You know, when you're coming into retirement, maybe you're younger and you have a bit more risk, maybe you run a business, you have a lot of capital, maybe you have a lot of investments elsewhere that's going to dictate exactly how you invest in the market based on where you're at. Right. So having that strategy is important. And also getting out of the right time. I can give you the best investment, you know, investments right now here today that do a 3, 4, 5, 6X. But if you don't sell at the right time, it's an absolute waste of time. Right. So the different portfolios that I mentioned, you know, based on where you're at, like the other one I would really consider is just around are you hodling or you're trading Again, I am not a trader. I really help people that have a considerable amount of money in crypto and want to grow that over a long period of time. We don't do short term trading. However, you can obviously make a bunch of money trading. I have put together a ten step strategy document if you need help with this, you know, and go through step by step. I've done other videos on it. You can go check that out on our website. I won't go through all of that today, but ultimately, you know, the way I think about the sectors that are most bullish this cycle are really fundamentally bitcoin. Right. And again, that's pretty boring for a lot of you. But having a big amount of bitcoin in your portfolio is really important. So if you look back over the last two years, if you were just to invest, you know, $50,000 back in January 2023 and you just held Bitcoin versus having a Bitcoin and altcoin portfolio, you've outperformed everyone. Right? This is again long term and not trading. I'm really talking to people that are time poor and want to build a longer term portfolio. Having a big chunk of bitcoin is super important. I do believe the, the tides will change over the next 12 to 24 months where we're going to start to see the bitcoin dominance come down and we're going to start to see some of these altcoins outperform. But you've got to be really, really selective in those altcoins because of how many new coins there are in circulation. There's literally millions and millions more altcoins than ever before. And yet the altcoin market cap didn't grow any higher than previous cycles. Right. So if we look at the total market cap of crypto excluding BTC and ETH and we look over like a multi year period, we were essentially not that much higher in terms of that trillion dollar market cap back from 2021 to this year. Right. So this is the amount of money in altcoins is basically, well, I mean we're lower than where we were in 2021, but we went through back late last year a period where there was just the same amount of capital in the altcoin space, but there was millions more coins, right, which equals that a lot of these coins are not going to perform and they're not going to come back to where we would hope them. So for me, really where we have the best risk to reward ratio profile in crypto is definitely the layer one space. The next gen layer one space. I believe Solana and Sui are going to be really big winners ultimately. You know, Solana, you know, in terms of our research, you know, really I think Solana did so well based on all the meme coin activity and pumped on fun late last year. But just how fast it moves, the user experience, how many developers are building on the chain. We've got a lot of adoption on Solana. Like if you were to look at, you know, even the ETF that's potentially coming in, you know, for Solana, like there's so many more people building on Solana because of how easy it is to use. And I think that's why the next gen layer one chains are doing so well. SUI is a big favorite of mine. I made a big investment, you know, last year, but also recently I shared that with our platinum members recently about $2. They had a big upcoming potential catalyst with the Pokemon partnership. But SUI is really crushing it in terms of user experience. Their ability for you to just utilize their platform. Like you can literally sign up with your Google account, which is really cool. They're really going hard on gaming. I think gaming is another big area that I am bullish on. Gaming and AI is a big sector, but also just the growth of the TVL and the active addresses, you know, early on has been, has been really, really exciting. You obviously have Raoul Pal who's very bullish on it. I think the speculative value and the community behind SUI is really, really positive. And I just think SUI is going to continue to grow, you know, over the coming months and years. Will SUI be around in years and years to come? I'm not sure. Again, I'm looking at this cycle and how I can get the most return out of my portfolio this cycle. I think SUI is a part of that. Look. Eth. Eth has been obviously not that great over the last four years. I've been buying eth since 80 bucks. You know, a lot of my ETH is, you know, very low in terms of investing amounts and that average buy price. However, since the big retracement, I do think ETH is a good risk reward play. That might be controversial. I think a lot of people throw down the tower for ETH. However, the foundational infrastructure layer for DeFi Web3 art. I do think that Ethereum from a blockchain perspective is the most secure, will have the most secure clients data and in terms of that sort of censorship, resistance is the best across any blockchain. However, from a marketing perspective has been shocking in really trying to differentiate itself in the market. I think that's where it's really struggled over the last little period. So I think ETH does deserve a little bit of allocation your portfolio if you don't have any or if you're coming to lower your buy price. I do think at that sort of seventeen hundred dollar level we are now eighteen hundred is a decent entry. Next is syrup. So syrup is a DEFI project I've been very, very bullish on for a long time. Syrup is used to be called Maple continues to grow in terms of its DEFI capabilities. Obviously Defi has not had A lot of time in the sun over the last few months or last couple of years. However, just the performance and growing TVL of Syrup has been phenomenal. I think it recently hit over a billion dollars in tvl. Continues to be a leader in the space, you know, really focusing on more institutional lending and has a lot of different yield products which is really exciting. Does have some competition with the more centralized players like Coinbase. However, I think Syrup continues to be a leader in sort of product development and for those DEFI projects that made it through the winter of the last bear market, had to really define itself and be nimble and be lean and to get to where we are today and have over a billion in TVL and I think the market cap is maybe a couple of hundred million is really, really exciting from a tokenomics perspective. All that revenue coming back in and driving revenues up. Very excited about where that's headed. And I think Maple will be a big or Syrup will be a big winner in the back end of the bull market when you start to get a lot of projects and protocols. Wanting to generate some more income after syrup. The last 5% that I would look to allocate in some more risk on plays. Again this is really depending on your portfolio and like different areas that you want to play in. For me I think the other, you know, really bullish sectors outside of the next gen layer ones are AI as I mentioned, gaming and I do think Meme Coins will still have a great run. We've started to see even the AI meme coin market caps over the last few weeks double from the, from the lows. I think Jupiter just is a play on Solana. Very, very excited about that. Had a bit of a falling out or their founders had a bit of a falling out late last year which put a bit of downwards pressure on the price. But they're continuing to build and I think Jupiter from, from an integration standpoint in Solana. I'm very excited about Pepe is my Meme Coin play. I do think Meme Coins will have a run once the we start to see retailers come back and all that speculation and excitement. Obviously memecoins was such a huge sector late last year. Only a small percent of my portfolio is in Pepe and also Hype is another next gen layer one. It's actually derivatives platform so it's generating revenue. Again, very exciting play. I think these sectors, you know, will continue to grow over the coming 12, 24 months. Beyond that, I don't know. I. I'm really looking to play at this cycle, majority of my wealth I want to accumulate in bitcoin, right? So my strategy really is to accumulate these altcoins, sell them near the top, and then build my bitcoin stack over time. That's really where I'm going to grow my, you know, grow my portfolio. And as I mentioned, I think building bitcoin and when you're adding more capital to your portfolio, being able to split it across different sectors and not just pumping 50k into one coin, obviously you can do that if you want, but you're playing a lot higher risk than just diversifying and having a good portfolio structure. I see a lot of people that overanalyze or over index on a certain altcoin, pump a bunch of money into it, then they end up having 40, 50, 60% in an altcoin that retraces. Now your whole portfolio is down, right? So as I mentioned, my ultimate goal here is to set good targets across my altcoins and sell them down. My goal here long term is to build Bitcoin and also to build my property portfolio to generate positive cash flow. I think bitcoin and property are the best two assets in the world and I'm using altcoins to grow that faster. Now it is very hard to pick exact times to sell your altcoins and also to sell at the peak is very, very difficult. You know, we did some research on how long, you know, the top of the market actually stays there. It's very, very, very, very short. Right. We're talking days for, you know, lower cap weeks for some of the higher cap stuff. But you know, when it comes time to sell, when I sold a lot of my Metaverse projects back in 2021, it felt nauseating, it felt sick, it felt wrong. The market just seemed to, you know, never go down. And looking back was the best thing I ever did. So when it comes to selling, make sure you have a proper structure, a property, proper plan. I would not have taken profits unless I actually had a quality plan. And again, if it feels wrong, you're probably doing the right thing. All right, so next thing I want to talk about is, you know, with that being said and what I've invested in and the how I think about that, if you're holding a bunch of crap altcoins, how to consider what to sell, what to hold, what to buy in, there's a five step process that I like to use that I'll share with you now. So, you know, these decisions can be very, very difficult. And I've done all of them. Right back when I first started, I held a bunch of altcoins, 20, 30 different coins, held them all the way down, all the way up and all the way down again. And one thing I really realized about holding altcoins is not necessarily how many you have or that, you know, that is a big indicator, but the percentage or allocation you have in those altcoins is really important. If you have a really small amount of money in a certain altcoin, then when it grows, even if it does a 2, 3, 4, 5X, it's going to make such a non material impact with your portfolio which will equate to you not actually selling it because it doesn't make any difference. Right. So I talk to a lot of our platinum clients where I sit down and look at, you know, their portfolio and help them with their assets. And a lot of them have, when they first start, a bunch of like, you know, low cap coins or coins I've held forever, that are down 70, 80, 90%, that are so small in terms of their portfolio allocation that it would have to do literally 100 or 200 extra it to make any difference. What I recommend doing or what I've done in the past is actually look at those altcoins and rather than having, you know, 20 or 30 with this amount in it, let's reduce that, let's like synthesize it and let's reallocate into two or three altcoins and have a larger, deeper, you know, investment in each. That way when and if it does actually grow based on our conviction, then we're going to actually make quality returns and it's going to make a material difference, which means we're actually going to sell. Okay, so if you're holding a bunch of coins and you're not sure what to sell, let's dive into that. So ultimately, you know, the big thing is remembering that like any technology, any new asset class, there is going to be changes in the ecosystem. And if you look back, you know, historical prices based on like, you know, coins that we used to have in the top five, top ten, none of these are around anymore. And I guess the big point here, I want to, you know, reiterate is that if you're holding coins from previous cycles, that doesn't, it's not guaranteed they'll be back again this cycle. Right. I remember, you know, Dash, Neo, Eos, Terra, Namecoin, a lot of these that were like, you know, massive on high in the, in terms of the, the market cap list and a lot of them are dead now, right? A lot of cryptocurrencies have actually died off. Okay. And a lot of projects, you know, just basically, you know, leave it, don't develop anymore. It will never be actually dead because they're on a blockchain. Obviously it's out there forever. But a lot of the development and distribution and marketing, a lot of people have sort of given up. So the key questions are basically, I have a bit of a checklist here, right? So first of all, you know, timing. Do they actually solve a growing need? Is there something that's coming up that's going to actually help them drive back in the market based on something that, you know, the world actually needs? Are they updating and releasing new products? Like literally, you can go on GitHub or you can go on their Twitter and actually see are they actually developing new things or they've just given up? Is there a community of developers or active growing ecosystem? That's a massive one. If there's a big increase in growing developers or ecosystems, that's why Sui's done so well. That is a big winner. Is there like content being put out? Are they active across events? Are they putting out good quality content across socials, ecosystems? And community is such a massive part of crypto and if they're not doing that well, that is a big red flag. Have they actually achieved anything? You know, the speculation only gets you so far. Are they actually getting any adoption from, from their consumers and users? Are competitors surpassing them in their product? And we've seen this massively in the, in the layer one space where we've seen older chains like Polkadot, even layer twos on Ethereum, like, you know, Polygon I sold about a year ago. We're just seeing better use cases for crypto and better products coming out. And these older products that have been been around for a long time and not getting the attention of the market because there's just better products in the, in the ecosystem. There's so much more competition this cycle, right? So you need to be aware of that. Do they have enough money left? That's a big one. A lot of projects die in the winter. You know, do they actually have a token economics that grow their revenue, that grow their market cap, or is a lot of it, you know, situated to just helping the founders and the initial investors? We see a lot of altcoins that are, you know, potentially pretty good. But you know, the way they're set up is not to actually grow their market cap. And even if they generate revenue, a lot of it Just goes back to, you know, early investors. A lot of those unlocks and things like that are huge in terms of sell pressure and. Yeah, do they actually have a narrative that's exciting? Is there a narrative that's coming up, you know, or catalysts they've got coming up to really grow and get their market share and get their community and socials back. So that's really important. Also remember that if your altcoin is down, it takes a lot more to go back up to break even, right? So if your altcoins down 80%, it needs to go back up 400% just to get back to break even. And that's not including any altcoins where they've actually released more tokens into the community. Okay, so not the community ecosystem. So a lot of altcoins, pretty much all of them will create and unlock more supply as the time goes on that the altcoins in circulation. So not only does it need to go 400% get to back to get back to break even, that's just to get back to break even to where it was when it started or when you bought it. A lot of these tokens have way more tokens. So the market cap needs to go up, you know, a lot more to get back to break even. Okay. And that's really massive part when you look at like fully diluted market cap and, and also you know, the tokens that aren't unlocked and that's, that's a big problem with these altcoins is that the sell pressure is huge. So that's just some questions you can ask yourself. The other one I would also look at is that like are you emotionally attached, man? I've been here, right? I think we've all been here. We're all emotionally attached to some coin. A lot of the poor decisions is going to be made off you being emotionally driven, not logically driven when it comes to buying or selling coins, right? So just be aware that some of you, maybe including me, have fallen in the trap or are falling in the trap of being emotionally attached to an altcoin. Remember, the market doesn't give a fuck about you or me, right? It doesn't care. The market will be the market. Whether or not you like something or not is not the point. The market is moving faster than ever and you need to really make sure that you're making decisions based off of logic and not emotion. The other big one is like can you actually save on tax by selling? So again, I'm not a tax advisor. Please speak to Your tax professional. But one of the things you can do, especially if you're in Australia, is you can lock in under certain structures, lock in your capital losses against future capital gains. So if you're down, you know, let's say 20 grand on an asset, you can take the loss and you can offset that against future gains. That is a big consideration. If you're holding something long term that's down, really be aware of your tax position because it can, I know it's a small win, it's minimizing your losses against essentially you don't ever lose that loss because if you make money in the future, which I hope you do, you can offset that, which is a big, a big positive. The other one is as well is a sunk cost fallacy. And I think this is another one that probably is more that emotionally driven piece is that, you know, you've put so much time and effort into it, you've held it for so long, you may as well, you know, hold onto it because, you know, why not? Again, hope is not a strategy folks. A lot of these old coins are not going to come back to fruition. Please ensure that you're really thinking about making the right decision and not just relying on hope and FOMO when it comes to it. So if you do need help with this, we do have a platinum program. I work with 100 high net worth clients. You do need to have a minimum of 250,000, your portfolio. But I actually work with you one on one. I help you with your strategy, help you with those insights and building a strategic exit plan and help you with those insights from the on chain analysts and other analysts we have in the team as 12 of us now. And you get all those. The research bit, the platform which I mentioned coaching with me, our private WhatsApp, we do annual meetups, all of our research platform, et cetera which I mentioned over here you get all of our token ratings dashboard and everything like that. But most importantly, you can work with me one on one and can help you with your portfolio. So we do only have very limited spots. I only work with certain individuals. So you can jump on a call, the link is in the description or you can head over to our website, jump on a call, see if it's a good fit and we'll try and help you out if we can. Now before I finish off, as I mentioned, the tax beat, but ultimately guys, what I want to leave you with is, you know, having that 50k, 10k, 20k, 100k, whatever it is, it is Pointless unless you have a strategy. There's always going to be opportunities in the market, new altcoins coming up. But really to to make money long term in this space you've got to be patient. You've got to get into the areas and the sectors that we do think that have big potential. That's where I made my money. My future projection as I mentioned before is really heavily in the next gen layer ones. I do think AI and gaming and also the meme coins will still be around this cycle but it's about portfolio allocation and not going too hard when the market's running because I know a lot of you probably barreled into the meme coin space, barrelled into the AI space and then you see these big 60, 70, 80% reductions. It really hurts the portfolio. So make sure you have that plan in place. If you also want to learn more about portfolio structure, strategy and everything I've spoken about today. We do have our upcoming high net worth summit coming up this on May 15th. This is a summit to five hour event. It's completely free if you have more than $250,000 in your portfolio. I've spent a lot of money putting this together. I've got some of the best speakers in the space and we're going to go through how to build a multi million dollar portfolio, how to build the strategy, you know, talking about bitcoin, the assets. We're bringing on a psychologist to talk about investor mindset. That's really important when it comes time to selling. And then we've got some epic speakers here so it's completely free. There's already 550 high net worths registered which is absolutely crazy. It's going to be an epic event. We've got a full production studio. Make sure to go over and check that out. The link is in my bio or it's over on our website. Thank you so much folks. If you like this video please leave a subscribe and I'll see you on the next one.
