Boyd Hayward demonstrates a warm-up exercise on a San Francisco bridge, based on Don Famularo's single-stroke roll from It's Your Move. He plays opposite hands in unison first, then leads with the weaker left hand, with his assistant Colette on pad support.

Hey guys, how's it going? Boyd here, coming to you today from San Francisco. As you can see, we have the wonderful Golden Gate Bridge here, San Francisco City in the background, and just over to our left in the water, Alcatraz. Just a quick exercise today for you guys before I head off to the Napa Wine Valley. This exercise was inspired by setting up the single stroke, which is in Don Famularo's book It's Your Move. And basically what we're doing is getting the hands set up so that when we go into a single stroke roll, we go into it cleanly. Because it's all very well and good playing the roll itself quick and Even, but we want to make sure that actually going into the roll is even. What I've done is put my own twist on it, and what the twist is, is to add the other hand playing as unison before we go into the exercise. So I'm going to call in my lovely assistant Colette, who's going to be providing pad support today, and I'll give you a little demonstration, show you what I mean. We're going to use the left hand as the leading hand, so it really works out the weaker side, and obviously if you're a left-handed player Yeah, off you go. Basically working a few things here. We're working our control of unisons, making sure they're nice and clean. And obviously our single strokes, making sure they're nice, even, and smooth. Any questions, guys, do drop me an email at info@drummerboy.com. And keep checking the website for some updates, and we will see you soon. Take it easy. Just playing my cards.
