This is a YouTube video titled "Going viral is not luck..." containing a monologue or presentation discussing social media algorithms, their business-driven goals, and how they control content visibility to maximize user engagement and ad revenue. The speaker explains the purpose of algorithms in retaining audience attention on platforms. The content is from April 2025.
Today we're about to surpass 5 billion people on social media. So that's how many people are producing content on these platforms. And the reality is of how do we get views, how do we get followers, how do we get audience? It's all controlled on the algorithms. And most people, like you said, demonize the algorithm, say, oh, they're shadow banning me, they're suppressing my reach on purpose to pay for it. But that's not the reality. These algorithms have a fundamental goal and it's a business goal. And how do all these platforms make money? They make money by serving ads. So these, these algorithms are designed solely to find the content they can grab and hold attention as long as possible at scale to keep people on the platforms longer. Because if people don't spend time on their platforms, they go elsewhere and thus their profit dwindles. So first understanding the purpose of the algorithm, they want to partner with us.
