For consistent trading profits, which should come first?

Brian McAvoy from Inside Out Trading argues that consistency matters more than profit when building a trading career. He draws on quality assurance experience to explain why getting the process right first leads to better results later.
Hi, Brian McAvoy with Inside Out Trading here. And I've got a quick question for you. If consistent profits is your goal, which of these two things should come first? Before we get started, make sure that you subscribe to this channel, and if you're on YouTube, make sure you go ahead and click the notification bell, okay? Every trader's goal is consistent profits. That's what we all want. Everybody does. I mean, if you're wanting something else, you're wanting excitement, then you're not a trader. You're just a gambler having fun over here and probably not making any money. But for those of us that want to make money, consistent profits is the goal. Right? Okay, so here's the thing. Okay, so see, here's what most traders do. And I did it myself when I first started trading in my early days, so I'm not bashing anybody. I did the same thing. But anyway, most traders follow this train of thought. First, you know, they say, well, you know, I want to make money. And so they go looking for, you know, a strategy system, an indicator, whatever, but some way to make money. And then. And then like, oh, cool. Yeah, it seems to work. And now they, you know, then the whole thought process is, you know, I want to do this over and over again. But the thing is, if you're just focused on profit first and then consistency, that's the hard way to go. And that's what everybody seems to do in trading. You know, it's like, you know, you find a system that works and then figure out how to be consistent about it. I mean, that's. And it's not unreasonable, you know, for the majority of people on the planet. Okay, that makes sense as far as, you know, approach to something that you're not already familiar with. But see, here's the thing, and this I learned from my days in quality assurance. In manufacturing, if you have a process that's all over the place, it's really hard to get consistent output out of that process and just get it running right and not have a lot of defective product. But if you have a consistent process, even if it isn't exactly where you want it to be, it's a whole lot easier to adjust, know, make adjustments for a consistent process that's a little out of whack than it is a process that's all over the place. And here's a couple of examples that make this easier for you to visualize. Okay, so let's say you're, you know, an archer, and, you know, you're looking at your target over. Across the range there. And if your arrows are all over the place, that's really hard to make adjustments for, to, you know, be hitting the center of the target all the time. But if you have a nice consistent. If you're consistent in what you're doing with, you know, with shooting the arrows and you got a nice tight pattern over there, that's easy to adjust for, to get it centered up. Well, it's a real similar analogy. Well, or golf, you know, if you're, you know, trying to get on the green and you just mean you're all over the place getting on the green, that's gonna be tough to make adjustments to improve your game. But if you can get on the green consistently, even if you're not near the cup now, you can make adjustments to get you closer to the cup consistently. While we're trading, it's kind of the same thing. If your trading's all over the place, it kind of really doesn't matter what you're doing because you're all over the place. It's hard to adjust that. So you want to focus on the consistency first and then make adjustments. Now the big challenge. Okay, so how do you get more consistent? No, it's not just be more disciplined. No. Or, you know, thinking that, you know, you have some psychological issues. No, that's not the case. You don't have a bunch of mommy daddy issues. You don't have. Honestly, you don't have issues with money, with success, any of that kind of. Or discipline. You don't have issues with those things. And here's the proof. If you had true issues with those things, you wouldn't be in a position to trade. If you had issues with money, you wouldn't have the money to trade. If you had issues with success, you wouldn't be in a position to trade. You'd be off doing something else. If you had issues with discipline, you probably wouldn't be here, period. Just because there's so much in life that requires a certain amount of discipline and you've mastered it and all those important areas, going out in the world safely, driving on busy roads safely, all that kind of stuff. So you've mastered discipline in all kinds of areas of your life. So it's not that you have all these other issues and you're just chasing the wrong, you know, the wrong goose. If you're thinking that that's the case, that's not the issue. As far as getting consistent in trading, there is a specific method to it. I mean, that's What I love about quality assurance is quality assurance is all about taking, you know, a given process or practice or activity, getting it dialed into the best practice and then making it really consistent. That's what quality is all about. And in my time as a quality engineer, I loved it because it's how to take human beings and get consistent results. Cool. But there are tools and practices that go with it. And when I applied them to my trading man, I mean, that quick, it was almost like overnight things just got easy. And I've been, since I've been doing, I've been teaching this to people for well over 10 years, almost 16 years. And it works for everybody. Everybody that comes to me, they apply it, they're like, wow. And all of a sudden they're turned around, they're making money, they're confident, they're calm, they're relaxed. Like, this is the one thing I was missing. Trading is not that tough. The consistency part of it's the tough part. But you're not going to find the answer in all the trading forms and psychology books and all that kind of stuff. That's not where the answer is.
