Mastering Market Uncertainty Changes EVERYTHING For Traders

Brian McAvoy from Inside Out Trading argues that consistency in executing your strategy matters more than having a great one. He shares how a process-driven approach reduces anxiety and improves results for traders dealing with market uncertainty.
Hi, Brian McAvoy here with Inside Out Trading. Today, we're going to talk about a fun topic. This one. It is. It's a lot of fun because we're going to take things from a kind of a negative and dark place that a lot of traders struggle with to how to make it better and help your trading improve. And what we're talking about, talking to almost any trader, and they say, yeah, one of the big challenges of trading is dealing with the uncertainty of the markets. You just. You never know. You know when it's going to turn against you. You never know when you enter the trade. Is this another one going to blow up in my face? And for a lot of traders, that uncertainty leads to almost an anxiety about it. And over the years, I've had a lot of people come to me and they're basically just sitting there saying, I just feel like every time I enter a trade, it's like there's somebody on the other side of the screen that's just waiting for me to place my stop so that they can move against me and stop me out. And they're getting so beat up that, again, they've got an anxiety about it because with every trade, it's like, I really have no idea if I'm going to make money today or not. And so it's this big unknown for them, and that sucks. It really does. I've been there. I know what that's like. You probably have to. You know what it's like where you almost get the feeling of futility. It's like things just plain aren't working and you feel like the markets are just out to get you, and that sucks. And for some traders, that's how they've been operating for a while, sadly. Now, the sad thing about it and what I want to help you affect, if you can relate to this, is it's not normal. It's not in. At some level, yes, the markets, they don't care. They don't care about you, they don't care about me. The markets are the markets. They're going to do what they do. It's not a personal matter. And so if you can relate to that, this hopefully will be helpful. A lot of times a person winds up in that position. For me, I wind up in that position because I tried a variety of different things and I finally had grabbed hold of one, one strategy that I liked and I would use it. And occasionally, yeah, I hit the winner. That got me all pumped up again about it again, got my hopes up, get my Faith kind of back. But most of the time it was just, I'm taking a beating. This is one of the things around the decline, my first year and it. But it felt. That's what began to feel normal. I was getting very. I was going into despair about the markets where it's like, yeah, it's just. Is anybody making money? Because it seems like no matter what I try, I'm having a hard time making money. And that sucked. What I learned when I turned things around is the biggest problem that I had was I didn't know how to take that strategy that I had and address it properly. I didn't know the right way to take it to the markets so that I could do it in a knowing fashion, not hoping fashion, because I liked the strategy, it made sense, but I just, it wasn't producing. When I took what I was doing in my quality assurance job in the corporate world and I applied it to trading, where I could now take what I thought was a process. See, where a lot of traders get screwed, get tripped up, is somebody will sell them a strategy. And I say, yeah, just try our strategy. Look at those consistent profits. Consistent profits. That's the sticker you see on everything in the trading world. It's like, buy our new tennis shoes, they'll get put on our shoes. They'll get you those consistent profits right here. Buy this desk, it'll get you those consistent profits. It's like, stop. And just because you have a clever strategy doesn't guarantee consistent profits. What does guarantee consistent profits is consistency. And where this is like the big stumbling block for so many traders. I. I'm the only one I know of that teaches specifically consistency because that's what that was my life in quality assurance, the foundation of quality is being able to identify best practices and then you get everybody. Executing consistently according to best practices was perfect for trading. It's what allowed me to turn things around because I know how to take an activity in the business world. I had 183 people. I was responsible for seven different departments, four different shifts, all kinds of people, all kinds of activities. And it was my job to take every one of those activities, those jobs, and define them into a process that produced consistent results. Stuff that was executed over and over again. That's why it's so perfect for trading. The strategy. It's important that you have a reasonable strategy. But see, here's a simple truth I learned a long time ago. If you think about it, this, you've experienced this and you've witnessed it. Here's the simple truth about trading. A decent strategy doesn't have to be great. A decent strategy executed consistently will outperform and make more money than a great strategy executed inconsistently. You've probably experienced this. So consistency is the key, not so much the strategy. I can take almost any strategy and make money with it because I know how to execute consistently and I know how to teach other people how to execute consistently. So the strategy, that's not a magic strategy. There are plenty of good strategies run around decades of people developing good strategies that work. It all comes down to can you execute it consistently? And so what's cool about it is when you learn this. And it's a skill set how to take a strategy and make a good methodical process on it so that you get consistent results again, you turn it into a process so that now it the consistency's there. This is one of the biggest things I try to get across to people. It's like focus on consistency first. Everybody says I want consistent profits, but what everybody does is like, I want to find a good strategy, I want to get profitable. Then I'll figure out how to get consistent with it. It's like, no, get consistent first. It's easy to make a consistent process more profitable. But if you're, if you don't have the consistency, if your trading is all over the place, that's hard to fix. The cool thing is when you get the consistency down, you go from dealing with anxiety and this feeling of futility and pessimism to now I'm dealing from knowns because I have the consistency. I know what to expect as far as a winning percentage. I know what to expect as far as a profit loss ratio. I know how much money to expect on a given month. If I've got this many trading opportunities, I know what to expect as far as my profits for the month. I go from knowns and probabilities and confidence, from the anxiety and the not making money and that uncertainty. And that's what's really cool about it. And see, here's the thing. The markets have enough variables in there. If you're bringing a whole bunch of variables to it because of the way you're trading, because you don't have that consistency. That's why things are so tough. That's why it seems so futile. Because it's like, yeah, man, I never know what to expect. But when you are a constant and trading has the markets have their own set of aerials. But if you're a constant and you have a good process, that's when you get a handle on this. That's when you truly have an edge. Because now not only do you have a decent strategy that, you know, works, you have the consistency and the execution. So yeah, now you got that good strategy. You can go execute it over and over and over and over again and it's going to work a sufficient amount of the time that you're making money. And that's what's really cool.
