My Most Valuable Trading Lesson

Brian McAvoy reflects on his first year of trading, arguing that taking personal responsibility for your outcomes matters more than chasing the next strategy. The real work is self-development, not finding the perfect system.
Hi, Brian McAvoy here with Inside Out Trading. And today I want to share with you one of the most valuable lessons in my first year of trading. This really was this. This was one of the tougher ones, but definitely, definitely, probably the most single valuable lesson that I got out of all of it. And I wanted to share this with you because it's one that so many traders, they still aren't getting, and it's causing their. Their struggles to continue for a long time. And this relates. Seriously, this, this comes down to, like, just the one thing or. Yeah, one. One specific thing that really can make a huge, huge difference for you. And what I'm talking about is, you know, when. When I first started trading, you know, I. It's like I looked at trading, get it, I. I know what I'm supposed to do. I jumped into it figuring, you know, I'll figure it out as I go. And I struggled. It was an emotional ride. I want to. Blowing out my account. And one of the epiphanies that hit me, though, for that whole year, at the end of that whole year was the fact that it was really easy for me to blame the markets or blame my broker or, you know, the guy, Ken Roberts that I bought the book from. The guy first, you know, introduced me to trading. It was really easy for me to blame everybody else or other things or circumstances or the markets or the world or whatever. And it was really only when I had said, hey, you know, I'm responsible, and I'm the one that's in control of where I'm at. I'm here by my own decision. So really, all this mess that I'm in, blowing my account, all that stuff, almost losing my marriage, it's my fault, and I need to take responsibility for it, because so long as I'm sitting there pointing at other things, saying, oh, you're the one, you know, you're what messed things up, I realized I was giving my power up to those things and my ability to do anything about it. But it was only when I accepted full responsibility for every aspect of, you know, what was going on with my trading and, and especially, you know, where I was at the, you know, success and. Or failure. And I just took responsibility for all of it, even, you know, as far as, you know, saying the uncertainty of the market. So I can't be responsible for the behavior of the markets. Well, I can't control the markets, but I can be responsible for how I respond to them and what I do. I mean, here's the thing. If you Think about it. It's only. There are plenty of people that do get into trading to get in the market. They get into the markets and they make money. Same markets, you know, that you might be struggling in. That I struggle in. There are people that, you know, get into it and they make money. And so it really is because they took different paths, they made different choices, and they took different actions. So, you know, whatever. Whatever situation you're in, and this isn't to make you feel bad. I'm not bringing this up to make you feel bad. This is actually an empowerment thing. Because as soon as you say, yes, it's my fault, I'm the one responsible for all this, now you can actually respond to it and say, all right, well, if it's up to me, if I'm the one who created this mess, I can create something else, but I need to do something different. I can't just keep pounding my head on the rock and saying, I'll just keep doing it the way I have been and, you know, think that somehow, miraculously, someday I'll wake up and everything will start working right. No, you have to say, well, what I've been doing hasn't been working, so what can I do differently? You know, maybe I've been watching YouTube videos, looking at the guys, you know, who, you know, sitting in front of the Lambos and the rented realist, you know, rented real estate, saying, you know, how I turned $100,000 into $20 million in four trades this afternoon. You know, stop watching those videos. Stop constantly looking at new strategies and jumping all over the place. Just basically take a look at what you've been doing and say, all right, well, consuming all this information, looking at 100 different strategies, you know, that hasn't been working. You know, thinking that, you know, this particular approach, that all I need is some magic strategy and, you know, focus on my psychology and being more disciplined. Maybe that isn't working. And if that's what you've been doing for the last three years and you're still not where you want to be, okay, there's evidence that says maybe that approach doesn't work because it shouldn't take three years. Maybe you just need some good training. Training on how to be a trader. Not just training on a strategy, but training on how to be a trader. And so, you know, if you can do that, if you can, you know, just be humble enough to say, okay, yeah, I'm, you know, I'm in. I'm in this mess because what I've done, but I can choose to make different choices. I can choose to pursue a different path. I can choose to get help. I can choose to seek out training. And instead of focusing on chasing strategies and chasing profit, I'll focus on myself as a trader and developing myself into a more skilled and capable trader. And I'll seek out the things that I don't know yet, that I don't yet understand. But, you know, a part of this and, you know, part of that might be, you know, just understanding that, yes, this is a business, it's repeated activity for profit. And so you need to, you know, maybe understand there's some business acumen that goes with this. Maybe there's some things about being a trader and, you know, the daily placing of trades that is, you know, that you've been missing, you know, like focusing on consistency before profit. And so, you know, like I said, just understand when you take responsibility for it and you say, yeah, it is all my fault. I'm the one who got me here and I can choose a different course now, starting right now. That's cool. That's empowering. You can leave the past behind and, you know, get a fresh start. So, anyway, I hope that's been helpful. I publish these videos every week, you know, and I hope to help you become a better trader so you can be successful at this.
