The #1 Thing All Traders Really Want - and no, it's not profits

Brian McAboy argues that what traders really need isn't profits but confidence. He talks to a client named Dave about moving from inconsistent strategies and low confidence to a disciplined, confident approach that leads to consistent success.
Probably the number one thing the traders say that they want when they come come to me for help. When I first started asking the question, you know, it's like, okay, what do you want out of this coaching? You know, I expected, when I first started asking, I expected the answer to be, you know, I just want to make some money. And I still, you know, I still hear that, you know, some traders, you know, say, well, you know, I just, I'd really like to get profitable. But the number one thing that I hear way more often than anything else is Brian, I just want some confidence. I am so tired of, you know, trading and just feeling anxious and stressed out and not knowing if I'm going to make some money or if I'm just going to, you know, you know, make money and get it back or just, I'm just complaining, lose money. And I've been at this for so long. So many traders have come to me, they've been at it for years, and they just are so beaten down. They just want to have some confidence in themselves and what they're doing. And I can totally relate to that. I mean, my first year, I was on such a stressful ride because I didn't know what I was doing. And even when I was making money, I felt like I was having a heart attack. My confidence level was not nearly where it should be even when I was making money. I mean, yeah, of course it felt good, but I knew that a lot of it was luck. And so, you know, with trading, you only get to the point of confidence when you really do have a solid handle on what you're doing. That's really think about it. That's what confidence truly is. It's that knowing that you're good and not just, you know, you're okay, it means that you're good at what you're doing, you have a handle on it, you're competent, and you can deal with whatever the realities are. That's what true confidence is. A lot of traders are trading with courage where it's like, you know, gosh, I hope this, you know, I hope this works and, but I'll, you know, I'll brave, I'll overcome my fears, and, you know, I'll go for it anyway. That's. Courage is acting in spite of fear. Confidence is when the realities of the markets and everything that hasn't changed, but you're coming into it knowing that you're solid, you know that your system works, you know that you're good executing it, that you can trade it well and you can go to the markets, and it doesn't matter what the markets do, you know, you're okay. And you also know that you don't need anybody else. You know, you're not, you know, on webinars every single week, you know, looking for the new strategy and all that kind of stuff, jumping around from one of the next, looking for that magic strategy that's going to fix everything, let you win all the time. I mean, so many traders that I talk to, they're just so busy chasing things. You know, it's like, well, you know, what I was using. It didn't work last week. So I gotta, you know, I gotta find something that, you know, would have worked last week. And. And then, you know, this week goes that way, and that's like the next week. Oh, you know, it didn't work last week, so I gotta find something new. And, you know, the other day, you know, just, you know, the markets just weren't agreeing, and I gotta find, you know, I gotta find something new. And so they're constantly chasing strategies. And the thing is, that's not a confident position to operate from. You can only truly get settled down with your emotions when you have the confidence and the competence in yourself and what you're doing. Of course, you have to have faith in your strategy, of course, and that's part of it. That's one of the skill sets, that's part of being a competent, confident, truly independent trader is knowing how to take a strategy and, you know, establish the confidence with that strategy and the confidence with yourself trading that strategy. That's a skill set. It doesn't just happen. There's a way to go about it so that, yes, you can take a strategy, develop the confidence with it, the competence, and take it to the markets and trade it truly confidently and at peace, you know, with peace of mind. And the thing is, when you're going to the markets with true confidence in your system and yourself, that's when your emotions fall away and they just calm down. You don't have to turn them off. You don't have to fight them. They've calmed down because, you know, you're good. And you know why you're good. You're not. It's not just, hey, I got a cool strategy. And, you know, that's why, I mean, it's like, for me, I love using the golf analogy. It's like, I could go, you know, grab Tiger woods clubs, and that's not going to make me a great golfer. And I'll, you know, I'll still, you know, I might have a little more courage going to play golf if I'm using Tiger woods clubs, but I'm still not going to be truly confident that I could be a great golfer. And the same thing is true of trading. The confidence comes from focusing on yourself. I mean, success in trading comes from the inside out. It really does. It all comes from you. And so, you know, when you develop and grow, broaden your skills, your abilities, your competencies, your understandings of, you know, as a trader, the game gets easier and your emotions calm down. You don't feel the need to chase trades. You can be okay knowing that, yes, there are a thousand trades in any given second going on in the market. So they're literally probably millions of trades happening that you're not in on. And you, but you don't feel a need to go chase them. You can see the market moves and not feel the need to go chase them. You're very comfortable sticking with what you got because, you know, you're solid. You know, you know your system is solid and you're solid trading it. And when that confidence comes, that's when the peace of mind comes and it's really cool. And so that's really where you want to be operating from, is with that confidence where you've had the training to now, you know, yes, where now you truly are prepared for this. I mean, think back to your training. You know, as far as, you know, being a trader, was somebody teaching you how to be a trader or were they just teaching you a method? Probably just teaching a new method and, you know, maybe some, you know, how to be disciplined, you know, that kind of stuff. And those, you know, those things are important. You do still need to have a decent strategy. You do have, there is some psychology. And of course you can't just be undisciplined and random in what you're doing. But those are not where the magic happens. Magic, again, is in you. And as you become a more skilled, you know, trader with deeper understanding, good know how, ability, all that kind of stuff, that's when the game gets easy and your emotions calm down. The psychology gets easy, what strategy to use gets easy. Making money consistently gets easy because now you have become the trader that you need to be to trade with confidence and, and your subconscious will also recognize, yeah, you've got a handle on this. You know what you're doing, you're good, and it will leave you alone and stop sabotaging you. So long as you are still just an amateur with a good system, your Subconscious is going to keep correcting your level of success and your profits and make sure that you're not getting what it, you know, it believes you deserve based on, you know, your skill level as a trader. As long as your subconscious knows that you're still an amateur, you know, trying to buy good clubs to, you know, to be a great golfer with, your subconscious knows and it will keep resetting you. It's only when you grow and develop as a trader. Now here's why it takes so blooming long for so many traders because you're not focusing on you, you're focusing on strategy and making money. Your, your development as a trader is going to be very slow. You're going to learn through trial and error and, you know, losses and beatings and that kind of stuff. And that takes a lot of time that way. It really does. If your primary method of learning is trial and error and getting slapped around by the markets and how to take your money, that's the long, hard, expensive road to get there. When you get training and you actually have somebody, you know, that can show you, yes, this is how you do these things and here's the understanding behind it. And now you, you grow and develop as a trader. That's when it gets really cool. Now you're becoming the trader that you need to be for this to get, you know, become pretty straightforward in very matter of fact, very business like. And that's when it's really cool. So, you know, if your confidence isn't where you're at, I mean, ask yourself right now, you know, on a scale of 1 to 10, where is your confidence? You know, from 1 to 10, 10 being, yeah, I'm solid, 1, I can't make a dollar, you know, put a gun in my head, you know, 1 to 10. Where are you right now with, with your, with your trading? You know, your confidence level to go to the markets and know that you're solid, that this month you're going to make money. Where are you at right now? If you're on the lower half of the scale, understand it's not because you need a new strategy or, you know, some way to, you know, you know, repress, you know, suppress your emotions. You need to skill up and get the training that was missing from, you know, when you first started. When you get that training and you become the trader that you need to be, you'll find that your confidence goes up and up and up and up. If you and I'd like to share this, here's a good example. I like to share this short clip with you when I was talking with one of my clients. So I'd like to share this with you right now. And I'll let you hear it in his words, what it's like when you get a handle on this, on this occupation, and you really become who you need to become. It's really worthwhile. Do you mind if I just ask you a couple of questions? Just answer them candidly? Sure, yeah. As far as before we started working together, what we. What were you. What. What kind of stuff were you struggling with, with your trading? What kind of. What kind of obstacles or whatever were you running into?
I think that the biggest issue for me was having a consistent approach to trading. Every day I might trade Fibonacci one day, I might try support and resistance another day, I might try this another day. And if it didn't work one day, I'd go on something else the next day. So just no consistent approach to the markets as you and I have been working on.
Now, how long had you been trading before we started working together with futures trading?
About one year.
Okay. Had you had profitable months or mostly no.
Up and down, big swings in the equity curve. One month could be great. The next month could be totally different.
Okay. Okay, fair enough. What all had you done as far as trying to, you know, get your trading working right? Like I said, prior to us working together.
The biggest thing was really just to. To look for the next, you know, the next holy grail.
What's the.
What's the next best system that I should try? Maybe this is the one that works. So I'd say just searching and, you know, getting emails about, you know, watch this webinar, learn about this system. You know, try that for a week or two. Watch for the next email. Try that for a week or two. Just again, you know, constant searching.
Well, where would you say your confidence level was that on, like, on a scale of 1 to 10, where was.
It in the past?
Yeah.
Oh, it might be a two or a three at best.
Okay, where are you at now?
Same up to about. I'd say 8, 9 now easily consistently 8, 9.
Cool. And so feeling pretty solid as far as going to the markets every day.
Yes. I have a very, very patient approach. Now. I know what I'm looking for, I know what I'm not looking for. And I've disciplined myself to only trade when I'm supposed to trade based on the work that we've done together.
Cool. So your comfort level is pretty good. Motion levels, pretty pretty where you want it yes, absolutely.
Both are, Both are rock solid right now. Yes.
Excellent. Excellent. Well, cool. Well, thanks for sharing your thoughts on that. So that just gives you a little look at what it's like, you know, after, after you've had a chance to establish that confidence, you can compare that with how you feel right now and take a look at it and say, is that how I want to feel going to my trading, you know, where, yeah, I'm solid. You can just hear it in his voice. You can see it on his face. He's not where he was now he's solid. He knows it. And, yeah, it's just really cool. And the cool thing is it can happen for you. You're closer than you think you probably are. And so it's just a matter of, you know, you've already been trading for a little bit, maybe a while, so you got a handle, you know, on a fair amount of things. Now it's just a matter of filling the gaps that, you know were there from your training when you first started trading. And, you know, what hasn't been filled along the way. When you fill in those gaps and you skill up and you get up to here, you've seen with Dave, that's what it looks like, and you can have that, too. Like I said, the number one thing I have traders come to me with is, hey, Brian, I just want to have some confidence. I'm so tired of trading and just feeling anxious and defeated and all that kind of stuff. I just want to have some confidence, confidence in what I'm doing, and you get to see it in Dave's face, and it's really cool. And you can have that too. So.
