Trader Coaching: Helpful Question to Make 2023 a Great Year

A trader coach shares a self-reflection question designed to help you improve your trading in the year ahead. The focus is on adapting your strategies and taking action to get better results.
So here we are at the beginning of 2023, and here's a really important question to help you get things in perspective. If you're not exactly thrilled with where you're at right now, here's the question. When you first started trading, or maybe even as recently as, you know, say this time last year, how far along did you figure you would be by now? I mean, did you really think that this is where you would be or did you maybe think that you would probably be further along? And I'm not bringing this up, I'm not judging. I go through this routine with myself all the time, every year, actually, more than once a year. You know, it's kind of a check in. But the thing is, if it's really easy as you know, the year goes along to get caught up in just the day to day routines and grind and let the year kind of go by. And as you go through the year and lose momentum, you know, just because, you know, things wear you down over the year. But that's why it's really important to have goals and not just resolutions. And so it's just critical that every now and then you step back and you say, you know, am I where I wanted to be by now or was I thinking that I should be further along? Well, maybe I should take a look at what I've, what, you know, my strategy that I, that I employed. Did I even employ a strategy or did I just kind of, you know, do stuff and did it work? And if it didn't work, that's okay. That's feedback at least. You know, okay, I need to change something. Something needs to change. Because here's the thing. If you don't change what you're doing, your results are not likely to change. We all know this, but we have this fear. There's part of us that has a fear of change. And so we need to just say, hey, you know, change is actually a good thing because, you know, we're hardly ever going to be right all the time. Matter of fact, most of the time, yeah, we're wrong. I mean, even like, you know, home run hitters on a baseball team, you know, somebody who's batting.400 is considered doing it really well. And that means that six out of ten times they, you know, don't get on base. So that's okay, just so long as, you know, you keep swinging and you pay attention to what's going on so that you can keep your average up there. And if things aren't going the way they have been, if it's gotten kind of a, you know, kind of a crummy routine. It's not great anyway, or you're still not where you want to be, even if things are going okay, you know, really, you, you want greatness. You don't want things to just be okay, you want them to be excellent. Right? So now's a really good time to say, well, I'm going to put in, I'm going to apply a different strategy and I'm going to approach things differently. I'm going to do some things differently that I haven't done before because what I've been doing, it's gotten me this far, but it's probably, you know, what's gotten me here. You've heard the phrase, what's, what got you here won't get you there. Totally applicable in trading. This is an evolving process as first being a trader, you're not the same person you were the day you started trading, and you're going to be different a year from now. So hopefully, you know, hopefully not just the same, you know, the same person, same trader getting the same results. Hopefully, you know, yeah, you will grow and evolve into somebody more capable, more successful, more, you know, enjoying your trading more. And just like I said, it's, you know, you'll evolve and grow, but it's only going to happen if you actually take some steps toward the growth. So if you need outside help, which most of the time traders do, because especially if you've kind of exhausted your own resources as far as what you can see as far as solutions, it's really important that maybe you look to other people for solutions, people who are further along than you and are addressing or have figured out how to address the issues that you're dealing with. And so, you know, I can help you with a lot of it, especially like it's consistency or, you know, the psychological stuff with trading, you know, getting a lot of things sorted out from the, you know, business perspective of it. So if you'd like my help, great. If you don't get my help, get help from somewhere. But don't just sit there and have another year go by. Don't be sitting here, you know, January of 2024 saying, wow, yeah, nothing's really changed. And yeah, I wish it would. I wish it were better. Let's make it better. And so take some positive action. If, you know, if there's been some things that didn't work out, fine, you know, take what you can from them as far as lessons and apply those and, you know, keep moving forward, but that's how you're going to make this year a good year.
