Trading Psychology: Limiting Beliefs? Best Way to Deal w Them

This is a YouTube video titled "Trading Psychology: Limiting Beliefs? Best Way to Deal w Them" created in April 2023. The content features a single speaker, presumably Brian, discussing common limiting beliefs traders have about themselves, particularly the misconception that there is something inherently wrong with them. The speaker offers insights into changing these beliefs by altering experiences, taking breaks from trading, and seeking coaching or outside help to improve consistency and emotional resilience in trading. The video serves as a motivational and educational talk aimed at traders struggling with psychological barriers and inconsistent results.
So when it comes to trading psychology, there's one matter that you really have to attend to because it's kind of at the core of just about everything. And if you don't address this, you know, your other efforts are really going to be, you know, just, just filled with frustration. And so what am I talking about? Well, we're talking about your beliefs. And the thing is, when a lot of traders come to me, you know, they're carrying a few beliefs that are just plain wrong and very unhelpful. The first one is that, you know, the belief that there's something wrong with you. You know, a lot of times trader company traders will come to me and they say, you know, Brian, you know, it's trading so simple. I get it and I've got a decent strategy, but I just can't, you know, seem to stick to it. And, you know, I just keep, you know, shooting myself in the foot and making all these stupid mistakes. And, you know, so the problem has to be me. What I need to fix is me. And so, you know, that's what they're thinking, but that's very incorrect because you, as a person, you're okay. You really are. Just the fact that you're in a position to trade is proof that you're at least sufficiently okay with money, with success, and with discipline. You know, so thinking that, you know, there's some, you know, disconnect that, you know, somehow, you know, you've got, you know, a bad relationship with money or, you know, maybe you have a fear of success or whatever. It's like, no, those are actually incorrect because simply, I mean, if they were true, you wouldn't be in a position. Position to trade. That's the thing. If those were actually true, you just plain, you wouldn't be in a position to trade. You wouldn't have the money. You wouldn't have the level of success required to be a trader. And so again, it goes back to the, you know, the proof, you know, simply the fact that you're in a position to trade, you know, that you've got, you know, 10, 25, 50, $100,000 to fund an account with is proof that you're okay with money, that you're okay with discipline, that you're okay with success, at least to a sufficient degree. So you, as a person, you're okay. And that's one of the big limiting beliefs that a lot of traders are carrying. And it's an understandable belief. I mean, you've been at it for a while. You've been Beating your head on this rock and you haven't figured it out and you're used to being successful and many just can't seem to be trading. So it's an understandable belief because it's logical. But the thing is, you're missing information, and that's why it's flawed logic. Just because you're struggling doesn't mean there's something wrong with you as a person. It means that you're struggling because there's something needed with you as a trader. Okay, so what are we talking about? I mean, you know, we're talking about, again, beliefs. And so. Okay, so what is a belief? Well, a belief is something that you hold to be true, right? You say, yes, this is, and that's a belief. But where do your beliefs come from? Well, your experience. Right. Because, I mean, that's going to be like your most cemented beliefs. You know, somebody might say something to you, you might read something and you say, oh, okay, and you take that as truth. But that's one that can be easily swayed. But when it comes down to, and I love this because I was, you know, sitting in the group one day and somebody asked the question, you know what? Okay, so what is, you know, what is truth? And the, you know, what is your truth? And somebody spoke up and they said, well, it's your experience. And so that's absolutely true. So, yeah, you know, if you're believing these things, as far as, you know, with trading, you know, yeah, you know, I'm just having to, you know, struggle and I'm struggling. I'm having a tough time staying disciplined. I keep shooting myself in the front. Okay, that's been your experience. And so, yeah, that's why, that's why you're believing. Otherwise there'd be something wrong with me. Because you're used to being successful. Again, that's been your experience outside of trading, but with trading, struggling. And so again, that's been your experience. So. But if you believe that there's something wrong with you, then that's going to stay in your way and cause you to sabotage yourself. So how do you change your beliefs? Well, you can do affirmations. That's one thing. You can do subliminal hypnosis. Those are both effective. But one of the best ways to address your beliefs really is to change your experience. Oh, wow. Okay. So now you're saying, okay, Brian, well, how do I do that? Because my experience, it mostly sucks. Of course, I've had some wins along the way, but on the whole, I'm still Not where I want to be. And so that's one of the main things I do when I'm coaching somebody is I help them change their experience so that we can change their beliefs. And that's one of the cool things about it. Okay, so how do we change your experience? Well, just going through the coaching process itself is a huge pattern interrupt. And that's one of the main things. If you want to change an experience, change a behavior pattern, change associations, you have to interrupt the old patterns. One of the best ways to do that, really, is to take a break from trading. Stop reinforcing the experience every day and interrupt it with a break. Take a week or two or 30 days off and just plain change your daily experience. And then we can come back to it fresh. That's one of the best ways to really help yourself. And the nice thing, nice thing about trading as a business is you can step away from the markets. Won't hurt your business at all. Any other business, you know, you step away from the business for 30 days, it might, you know, really screw up business, especially if the business depends on you. But with trading, no, the markets are very forgiving in this regard. You can step away from the markets long as you want. Come right back, hey, they're welcome you back with open arms. Hey, like you never left. So a great way to, you know, to provide a pattern interrupt is to just plain take a break from trading. And if you're losing money, hey, cool. Take a break from losing money. Take a break from the stress, from the anxiety and, you know, the mental exhaustion. Give yourself a chance to recreate yourself and, you know, get refreshed and rested so that you can come back to it with a clear head and a clean slate or at least a cleaner sleep again. If you just keep. If you keep doing what you've been doing, all you're doing is reinforcing all the bad stuff. So you need to provide a pattern interrupt. That's step one. And then from there again, it's about changing your experience. And I have an entire process where we go through and we do it a step at a time, as well as training you on the things that you didn't get trained on that were missing from your training as a trader when you first started out, things that nobody's ever taught you and told you. And that's the other reason that you're struggling. See, you don't have emotional issues. You don't. You're struggling because you're trying to do a job that you haven't been Properly prepared for and no wonder. It's rough and it's a stressful situation and it's almost impossible for it not to be an emotional ride is because it is. Odds are 99 to 1 that you did not receive sufficient and really adequate training when you first got into trading, before you started trading with real money, which is a position position almost nearly all traders. And I was too when I first started, When I first started trading with real money, I didn't know what I was doing. I, I hadn't, I didn't have squat for training. I got bad training because I was training myself and I didn't know what I was doing. So one of the best things you can do for yourself is to get help, get an outside perspective, get a pattern interrupt. Outside help is another great pattern interrupt. Instead of you just wrestling with it yourself, if you get outside help, then you can get those perspectives. You can fill in the gaps and learn the things that nobody's taught you along the way, like how to be consistent beyond just force of will and discipline. There are specific ways to do this. I mean, I used to be a quality assurance manager. So what I did was take processes and make them consistent. And that's how I turn my trading around. That's how, you know, that's how you help other traders is I teach you how to be consistent. Because once you get the consistent part down, the profit part gets pretty easy at that after that. And it's really cool too because it doesn't take a year on a therapist couch, you know, trying to figure out what your mommy daddy issues are. You know, why you can't, you know, win at trading again, it's because you haven't been given the proper training. And the other thing about it is if you're, as long as you're trying to train yourself, you are your own limitation. You can't see what you can't see and you don't know what you don't know. And so you know you're going to stay stuck there because if you don't know what the problem is, you can't fix it. If you can't see what needs to be done well, you can't do anything about it. And so that's where again, the outside help really comes in. So helpful. And besides that, it's also just enjoyable having some help, having somebody to talk to that actually understands the trading experience and how to fix it and what it's like to struggle and what it's like to turn things around. So again, as far as the beliefs. The best way to change your beliefs is to change your experience, because your experience is going to be your truth from an experiential level. It's something that you've been through. And when you can change your experience, changing your beliefs gets easy at that point. And it's really cool too, because you're changing your experience. You're getting to enjoy something better. And that's exactly what you want anyway. So anyway, I hope this has been helpful. If it has, give me a like, go and subscribe to my channel.
