Trading Psychology : Undoing The Damage

A trader explains why most people fail: not bad psychology or market conditions, but lack of proper training. He argues mentorship and coaching are worth the cost to avoid expensive mistakes and build the right mental habits.
You know, one of the biggest challenges most traders have really isn't even trading itself. And no, it's not some psychological issue that you're bringing to trading. One of the biggest challenges that you have as a trader is lack of good training. And so, like, my first year of trading, I didn't know what I was doing, but I was trying to learn it on my own. So I'm training myself somebody that doesn't know what he's doing. And so, yeah, for several months, all I was doing was practicing bad trading because again, I didn't know what I was doing. And yeah, I'm trying to train myself. So what happens is during this period is a whole lot of bad things happen mentally. And so we're talking about, again, the practicing bad trading, the making a lot of mistakes, getting used to trading in an emotional state, state of confusion, a lot of hesitation and anxiety going on. And so it's the biggest challenge really for traders. Again, it's not trading itself. It's not the markets. It's the period where you go where you're lacking the good training because during that period, all you're doing is reinforcing any bad stuff that's gotten established and perpetuating the less than helpful cycle that you've gotten into. And so when I work with traders, one of the first things that we do is, as part of the mental conditioning is undoing the damage that's already been there. And we do that by, with the coaching that I do, we change your trading experience so that now, you know, we're going to undo some of the damage that's been done by changing your experience and also very intentionally giving you some positive training so that, you know, yeah, you can get used to operating in a proper mode, one where your emotions really aren't even an issue. But really, I mean, the biggest challenge trading is not that tough. It's not. But it also does require skills and knowledge and understandings that you just can't figure out by sitting down and starting to trade. The markets don't lend themselves to that. And so it can be really difficult to try to figure this game out on your own. And of course, all the noise and misinformation that's out there and everybody's saying, hey, just buy our strategy. Look at this chart we got in here, we got out over here. Look at all this money we made. You can do it too. No, that's garbage. It's not that simple. You know, where it's, you know, buy on green, sell on red, not that Simple. This job does require certain skills. And if you get into this, you know, this occupation and you don't have any related prior experience that you can draw on, like maybe, you know, if you used to be a professional gambler or something like that. Yes, it is a similar, similar game. Speculation. But, you know, if you jump into this occupation and you don't get the proper training, this is not an occupation that can just be figured out. It's tough. That's why it takes so long, because the markets don't tell you what you're doing wrong. It just takes your money. So, again, the biggest challenge really is the lack of training. And so the answer is, instead of just trying to figure it out on your own or learning on Reddit or a handful of YouTube videos, get yourself a good mentor or coach that, you know, resonates with you and they can speak to, you know, whatever it is that you're needing, whether it's, you know, to the tangible skills of, you know, being able to put together a strategy and a system and properly test it out and, you know, deploying a strategy or, you know, is it, you know, on this psychological side where you just, you know, you got to get the right mindset about it, maybe, you know, getting your business organized, whatever, whatever it is you're needing, you know, go ahead and get the help that you need. Because as long as you're trying to train yourself, you are your own limitation. Because you don't know what you don't know and you can't see what you can't see. And so long as you're trying to do it all on your own, you're limited by that. And that's where a good mentor can really help you. Because, you know, they had that outside perspective they can bring to you. They can, they can have the, you know, they have the experience that they can share with you and give you the direction as far as, yeah, you need to focus on this. No, don't focus on that. And they give you the feedback and guide you through the process of developing into being a consistent trader. And so I just wanted to share that with. Because, you know, some traders, they think, you know, gosh, if I could just find the right strategy. And they're thinking that's the answer. Or, you know, the, the fact that they don't have a strategy, they're comfortable with that. That's their biggest hurdle. Or, you know, maybe it's the uncertainty of the markets, you know, that's the biggest challenge. No, there are tons of traders. I mean, we've been doing it for years where, yes, we are trading successfully and comfortably and confidently and making money. And it's so long as you know what you're doing, you have the right skills and knowledge and it's not that tough. And so that's the whole key is go ahead and, you know, learn from the experience of others instead of trying to figure it out on yourself. Because I mean, if you think about it, you're going to pay for your education one way or the other. You can pay a coach or a mentor or you can pay with your time and whatever losses you incur along the way. And I guarantee your time and your life because time is life. If you try to just figure it out on your own, that is the long and expensive way to pay for your trading education. It really is. You are so much better off to shortcut the learning curve, get the help you need, get the outside perspective and you will be so glad that you did because the markets are a harsh taskmaster and a mean teacher and they'll beat on you for years if you let them. You know, just try to take them on one on one. Get to help make your life easy, make it more profitable and fun. You'll be glad that you did. Hope this helps.
