Ep 156 | Jim Carrey and The Law of Attraction

In this solo episode of the No Days Off Podcast, host Brian Gubernick defines the Law of Attraction as a belief that thoughts, feelings, and emitted energy attract similar experiences. He breaks the concept into four core components—positive thinking, affirmations, visualization, and gratitude—explaining how each works to align mindset with desired outcomes. Brian illustrates the practice with two Jim Carrey stories: Carrey’s habit of spending hours on Mulholland Drive visualizing his future success, and the famous anecdote of Carrey writing himself a post‑dated $10 million check for “acting services rendered,” which he later cashed when he earned that amount for The Mask. Brian connects these anecdotes to psychological ideas like the reticular activating system, emphasizing that mindset, talent, and unconventional habits together drive achievement. He ends with a reflective question prompting listeners to identify which of the four components they should focus on to shift their energy and attract desired results, while reaffirming his belief that the universe conspires in favor of positive intention.

Thank you for joining me today. It's Brian Gubernick and welcome to the No Days Off Podcast, where we believe that every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. Let's get into it. Today I want to talk about Jim Carrey and the law of attraction. Now most of us have probably heard about the law of attraction. Some of us are probably very familiar with how it works and think about it on a regular basis. But I think most of us that do know of it do not think about it regularly. And so I hope today to define the law of attraction, describe what it is, talk about what it all is comprised of and how you can make it work for you. And then we'll talk around Jim Carrey and how he leveraged the law of attraction to lead to some of the, some of the great success he's had. So The law of attraction. What exactly is it? Law of attraction is a belief or a philosophical concept that suggests that your thoughts and your feelings and your energies, the energies that you put out in the universe, they attract similar thoughts and similar feelings and similar energies and therefore influence the outcomes and experiences in your life. So think positively, feel positive, emit positive energy, and attract like thoughts, feelings, and energies your way. Now, when you think about the law of attraction, it's really influenced by 3 or 4 different components. First, positive thinking. Okay? Positive thinking. So if you believe in the law of attraction, you know that positive thinking must occur. It's important to maintain a positive mindset and visualize your goals and your desires. So you think positively around where you want to go and you visualize where you want to go, which leads to affirmations, right? The next component of the law of attraction, affirmations, positive affirmations or statements reinforce your goals and your beliefs. And the idea is that with repeated affirmations, you can influence your subconscious mind. So when you think about the law of attraction, leveraging affirmations, and this may be affirmations in terms of spoken word, like maybe you're speaking your affirmations, maybe you're writing down, or maybe you're writing them down, or maybe you're just simply thinking about them in your mind and repeating them over and over again. But these positive affirmations, these positive statements reinforce the direction you want to go. And it influences your subconscious mind. You speak it into existence. So when you think Law of Attraction, you think positive thinking, you think affirmations. You also though, and I mentioned this a bit already, you think visualization. Visualizing your desired outcomes as if they've already happened can help you align your thoughts and your emotions with your goals. So closing your eyes and picturing what's going to happen tomorrow, or what's going to happen in that conversation, or what's going to happen next week, or maybe next decade, or maybe decades from now. If you're visualizing your desired outcome and you're placing yourself in that moment, you're repeatedly doing so. It's really helping you align your thoughts and your emotions with your goals, and you will attract that which you are visualizing. Lastly, the last component of the law of attraction is gratitude. Expressing gratitude for the things that you have in your life is believed to attract even more positive experiences. So being grateful, being thankful, the energy that comes with that, it's believed that you attract more things for which you should be grateful, right? So Law of Attraction is about positive thinking. It's about affirmations, about visualization. It's about gratitude. It's about your mind. I mean, it's about your mindset. It's about your belief that you're going to get to where you want to go and you thinking about it all of the time. Now, Jim Carrey, I mentioned him earlier. And what does he have to do with all this? Jim Carrey is someone, someone that believes deeply in the law of attraction. Jim Carrey has been interviewed many a time and, and Jim described years back, he described how before he was who he is today, before he became the famous actor and the successful, wealthy business person and actor that he is, he talked about how he used to hang out on Mulholland Drive in Hollywood, in LA, which Mulholland Drive is, is this famous road where, you know, celebrity after celebrity owns homes. It's got this amazing view of LA. And Jim would sit up there looking out at LA, close his eyes and visualize not for minutes, but for hours, what success would look like in his chosen field. Now, mind you, this was Jim before he was Jim. This was Jim when his jokes were falling flat. This is Jim when he probably had a fair amount of doubt as to the career choices he was making. But Jim would sit up there and he would visualize. He would tell the stories, like when he talked about his, his experience of sitting on Mulholland Drive, He would spend hours up there and he wouldn't leave until he literally had transformed his mind into believing that he in fact was a successful actor. Now Jim's got, you know, a unique ability in that, you know, he does have the ability to warp his mind. And that's one of the reasons he, you know, he really transformed himself and played some amazing characters over time. But, uh, you know, any of us can do this. Now Jim went one step further though. There's a great story, one I just recently heard, and I researched a little bit. Jim talks about it in an interview sometime in the '80s with Barbara Walters, or he talks— it was an interview with Barbara Walters, but it was about something he did in the '80s where, where Jim, I think in 1985, he wrote a check to himself for $10 million. And in the, uh, in the notes column or section of the check, he put for acting services rendered. He wrote himself a $10 million check for acting services rendered. And he took that check and he put it in his wallet. And roughly 8, 9, 10 years later, I think it was about 9 years later, Jim, uh, Well, he finds himself doing The Mask, the movie The Mask. And what did Jim get paid for The Mask? No surprise here, $10 million. So Jim, Jim put this, this check in his wallet. He wrote this crazy number on a check when he was a nobody in the mid-'80s. He postdated the check. And by 1994, The Mask came out. Jim made $10 million for doing it. This check served as amazing motivation. It helped him visualize his future success. It actually probably triggered his RAS, which we talk about the RAS, you know, reticular activating system, in, in episode 132. He would look at that check and it would make him think about where he wants to go. So he was struggling in, in the industry at the time. He was not a well-known actor, but he believed in the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction. This check is what pushed him, you know, along with many other things, of course, his talent. But this check reminded him where he wanted to go. Now keep in mind, there are thousands, tens of thousands, if not, you know, millions over the course of time of people that want to be famous actors just like Jim. But so few of them make it. So you got to ask yourself, yeah, talent of course plays a substantial role in all of that. But there's also some things that are outside the norm that the best of the best are doing. I gotta believe that Jim leveraging his positive mindset and the law of attraction has got to be one of those things. So the focusing question for you today, you're familiar with the law of attraction. You've probably even applied it in some ways, maybe not as purposefully as we're talking about here today, but you're aware of it. When you think law of attraction, the focusing question for you is, of these components, positive thinking, affirmations, visualization, and gratitude, which one or ones of the, uh, of this group do you need to focus a little bit more attention on? And in doing so would change your energy, change your mindset, and change what it is you're attracting to you. The universe conspires. I believe that. And while the law of attraction is not scientifically proven, there are lots of examples of across the globe that we can look at where positive mindset and affirmations, visualization, these things created an environment conducive to achievement of positive experiences and attainment of goals. That's all we have for you today. The No Days Off Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. And remember, every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. So let's get after it.
