Ep 211 | You are a Magnet of What You Model

In this solo episode of the No Days Off podcast, host Brian Gubernick expands on the idea that "you are a magnet of what you model," a concept he attributes to Tony Robbins. He argues that the thoughts, beliefs, and actions we consistently model shape the environment we attract, influencing leadership, talent acquisition, business decision‑making, health habits, financial growth, and personal relationships. Throughout the monologue, Brian asks listeners to examine what they are modeling in each of these domains—whether they are demonstrating the leadership behaviors they wish to see, managing their P&L with rigor, committing consistently to health, pursuing financial knowledge, or embodying caring relationship traits. He ties the principle to a Charlie Munger quote about deserving a good spouse, emphasizing that attracting positive outcomes requires modeling the qualities one wishes to draw into one’s life. The episode ends with a motivational call to use daily opportunities to improve the models we project.

Thank you for joining me today. It's Brian Gubernick, and welcome to the No Days Off podcast, where we believe that every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. Let's get into it. Today I want to talk about modeling. You've heard me say before in previous episodes that the single greatest way to to improve your leadership is to model the behavior expected of those around you. Model the behavior expected of those around you. So yes, there are so many different leadership tactics and strategies to deploy, but if you want to be a better leader today, then show up the way that you want others in your world to show up. I say that quite often. Again, it's been a theme here at No Days Off. Recently though, I heard a quote from Tony Robbins. That guy has a few of them. I heard a quote shared by Tony Robbins. I don't know if he's the originator of it or he borrowed it from someone else, but heard Tony say, you are a magnet of what you model. You are a magnet of what you model, which is a, a slight twist on what I was sharing earlier about modeling the behavior expected of those around you. That's a function of influence. But when you think about you are a magnet of what you model, what— where my head goes is what you model creates your environment. You attract those in your world based on what it is. In fact, you're modeling. You are a magnet of what you model suggests the idea that the things you focus on, the things you model in your life attract similar things. In other words, it emphasizes what I think to be the power of thoughts, the powers of— the power of your beliefs, the power of actions in shaping one's experiences. Tony advocates for the importance of mindset. He's nonstop about mindset and the influence of our mental patterns on our reality. So this quote of Tony's, encourages us to be mindful of our thoughts, be mindful of our behaviors and the examples that they set, and use these elements as ways to draw corresponding outcomes in our lives. So let's think around this a bit more. You are a magnet of what you model. Let's talk about business. You are a magnet of what you model. A big component of business, of course, is leading others. If you're the owner of a business, You are either leading a team, you are leading your customers towards a direction they'd like to go. You are leading day in and day out. What sort of leadership are you modeling? Being that you are a magnet of what you model, are you attracting other leaders into your world? Are you attracting others that aspire to lead in the way that you do? If you are in fact not attracting people that you believe can rise to leadership roles within your world, then it might be a place to start, might be to look in the mirror and ask yourself, what am I modeling? What am I showcasing to the world? When I think about talent attraction, so bringing great people into our world, what are you modeling? Are you modeling? Are you displaying the type of person that deserves to attract talent? Do people see you as an energy source or one that would take it away, take that energy away? Do they gravitate towards you because of how you show up, your work ethic, the way that your, you know, whatever your results are showcasing for you? Are you modeling a behavior that attracts talent? How about those that want to increase their business? They join you to do so, are you modeling behavior that makes that person who's attracted to you, that, that you're a magnet for, does it make them believe that they in fact can also increase their, their business? Are they seeing you do activities in your business world that are attractive to them? Maybe a better way to ask this question. If you're not recruiting the right talent into your world, Is it potentially because you're not modeling the right behavior and therefore not functioning as a magnet for those type of people? A couple other business things to think around. What about your management of your revenue and specifically of your expenses? Managing or, or analyzing your, your P&L, your income statement. If you are modeling a business owner that understands the numbers of their business, understands the drivers of their revenue, and what right-sizing your expenses might look like. If you are somebody that's a student of that game and everybody around you knows that in fact you are somebody that studies your P&L and makes business decisions based off of it, you are likely a magnet then for people that want to run a very similar way. In other words, if you're not attracting business-minded people to your world, maybe it's because you're not modeling somebody that— you're not displaying those things that a business-minded person would display. Lastly, as it pertains to business decision-making, best business, uh, business owners out there are making decisions quite frequently, but they're making the right decisions more oftentimes than they're making the wrong ones. In terms of, you know, you being a magnet of what you model, are you making good decisions? And are you attracting people into your world that are also making those right decisions? Are you doing ethical and moral things and therefore attracting ethical and moral people into your world? Interesting thing to consider. Now let's pivot. Let's pivot to health. When you think about health, I think about commitment, commitment to being healthy. You are a magnet of what you model. If you model a commitment to being healthy, you attract an environment that is committed to being healthy. How about your consistency around your health? If you are consistent, if you're modeling a behavior of consistency, then you are attracting, as a magnet would, consistency into your world. Financial wealth. If you are modeling the, uh, the behavior of somebody that's growth-minded around their financial wealth, knowledgeable, or aiming to become more knowledgeable, you will attract a circle of those that are on a similar path. If you track, if you goal set, if you calculate, If you vision a financial future and you model someone that is interested in this, that's constantly reviewing it, you will attract as a magnet would those that are on a similar journey. Lastly, relationships. If you model the behavior of someone that's caring, of somebody that listens, somebody that's interested in others, somebody that's dependable, If you model this, then you will likely attract it into your world as well. In summary, I think about a quote we recently shared from Charlie Munger about the best way to find a good spouse is to in fact deserve one. The best way to attract a spouse, a good spouse, is to deserve one. When I think around this quote, you are a magnet of what you model. You will attract into your world what in fact you deserve. So how you show up and what you put out to the world creates this, this, this magnetic force for the good or for the bad. We can run through the same list all over again and show somebody that is a poor leader, makes poor decisions, isn't committed to their health, doesn't care about their financial wealth, doesn't manage their relationships. And what you'll find is they are likely attracting, as a magnet would, others into their world that follow a similar path. That's all I have for you today, the No Days Off Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. And remember, every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. So let's get after it. [MUSIC] [MUSIC]
