Ep 220 | Life is for Living, Not Just Surviving

Brian Gubernick argues that staying comfortable is dying, drawing on Mac Newton's baseball wisdom and David Goggins' story of relentless self-belief. He says adopt a winner's mindset, adjust your body language and energy, and act like the star you claim to be.

Thank you for joining me today. It's Brian Gubernick, and welcome to the No Days Off podcast, where we believe that every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. Let's get into it. Today I want to talk about a message from my buddy, my mentor, Mac Newton. Mac is a friend of our show. I quote Mac quite often. He's a mentor of mine, a guy that's just had a massive impact on my life. And recently we did an episode about going from good to great, about good being the enemy of great and the steps you need to take in order to go from good to great. If you haven't listened to that episode, it was just yesterday's. So make sure you take a listen. 'Cause I think that it sets us up well For today's topic, I kind of want to double down on what we've been discussing about going from good to great. My buddy Mac says that life is for living. It's not just for surviving. Mac is not a fan of the comfort zone. He describes a comfort zone as really a rut, as a valley somewhat of despair. And when you're in a rut, when you're in a comfort zone, when you're in the valley of despair, Mac would go so far as to say, you're dying. You're dying. In other words, if you're not growing, you're dying. So he's not a fan of the comfort zone. Why? Again, because life is for living. It's not just for surviving. It doesn't matter what we are talking about, according to Mac. We've got to step out of the shadows. It takes a lot of courage to move out of the shadows, to move out of the comfort zone, but it is our responsibility as a human on this earth to max out our time here. And the way we go about doing that, the way we go about living instead of just surviving, is to step out of the shadows, is to have the courage to move out of the comfort zone. You got to step up, as Mac would say, and you got to become a star. You got to become a star, the star that you've always been. Mac loves baseball analogies, probably because he's got a World Series ring and a Super Bowl ring. And he would tell you, he would talk to farm baseball players, minor league baseball players, and he said he'd find so many of them that were unwilling to step out of the shadows. Unwilling to step out of their comfort zone and not become the star that they were meant to become. Recognize that every guy playing minor league baseball, when they go back to their hometown, they're a star. They were the best baseball player in their hometown, but then they get to the minor leagues and there's a degree of comfort. Yeah, they all want to get to the pros, but do they? Do they really? Do they have the mindset, the work ethic, the focus, the commitment, Most of them all have the skill level, but it's all the intangibles. That's what Mac's saying when he's saying get out of the shadows, get into your, you know, get out of your comfort zone. Now, the first person that must recognize that you're a star is you. You've got to recognize that you are a star. You've got to look in that mirror and say, I am that guy. I am that girl. David Goggins says it well. You know, Goggins would tell you, and I don't know if you're a big fan of Goggins, uh, but you know, most all of us know him by now. Goggins, you know, is a maniac. Of course, he was also 300 pounds. He was also going nowhere in life, and he decided he was going to change. And he tried to become a Navy SEAL and he failed, and he tried to become a Navy SEAL again and he failed, and he tried to become a Navy SEAL again for a third time. And he sort of got through, but he got an extension and he was able to get through BUD/S to become a SEAL. He would tell you that he knew he had it in him. He had to pull it out from deep, deep down inside. Initially, he may not have thought, but he had to look in the mirror and say, I am a star. I am capable, not just of becoming a SEAL, not just of winning, you know, in the military world, But then when he broke out of the military world to now go on and change the lives of so many others, he had to tell himself he was that star. Those playing it safe, which is code for trying to avoid failure, are more damaged and exposed for who they are and what they are far more often than those living freely and boldly. Let me restate that. That's a direct quote from our buddy Mac. Those playing it safe, trying to avoid failure, are more damaged and exposed for who they are and what they are far more often than those living freely and boldly. Wow. So how do you convince yourself that you're a star? It's simple. Act like it. You know what to do and you know what to say. You know what a star does. You know how a star behaves. You know what a star looks like. How do you convince yourself you're a star? Start acting like it. And if you feel you're faking it, so be it. Fake it till you make it. Get your head right. Right? Think like a winner. Speak like a winner. Carry yourself like a winner. What's your body language? What's your energy? How are you contributing? How are you showing up? Are you sitting in the front row? Are you, are you in the back? How do you convince yourself a star? Just start acting like it. Stars are ordinary people. Stars are ordinary people. That just happen to stand up and say, I got this, I got it. Ordinary people just making a decision to rise. That's all I have for you today. The No Days Off Podcast. Thank you so much for listening. And remember, every single day brings a new opportunity to get better. So let's get after it. [MUSIC] [MUSIC]
