But for insecurely attached boys, the story is different. They don't feel safe emotionally, and that means this instinct is always on. Insecurity has ingrained in them that love isn't dependable, don't count on it. Affection can quickly disappear, so don't need it. And safety can vanish, so stay on guard. So So he shuts down his emotions as a survival strategy, not because he doesn't care, but because his patterns tell him that's what keeps him safe, and in fact is the only way to make his life bearable. And then if you add in a chaotic childhood that was maybe filled with inconsistency, unpredictable moods, and broken promises, if you add all that on top of the evolutionary patterns and the attachment wounds, Well, now you have someone who doesn't ever feel safe and only knows one way to deal with it. Safety equals control plus emotional detachment. He's not consciously choosing control. His nervous system actually demands it. He has abandonment wounds that he doesn't understand and never will unless he seeks the awareness. He cannot fail. Because that will tell everyone around him that he's weak, and if he's weak, he's not worthy, and if he isn't worthy, he will be left behind. He doesn't want to be abandoned like he felt as a child, so he adapts. He's not going to admit weakness. He needs to stay safe, and he wants to belong, so he doesn't show too much, he doesn't need too much, and he doesn't feel too much, because control is what has kept men and society safe for all of time.
