Why Does Self Help Make Me More Confused?

Self-help advice contradicts itself: Jordan Peterson says get disciplined, Brené Brown says be vulnerable, Matthew Hussey says get close, Esther Perel says keep distance. You need to know yourself first, heal your wounds, then the skills actually fit together like puzzle pieces.

Have you ever noticed that the more advice you hear about how to grow, the more confused you actually feel? The truth is, it's called a growth industry for a reason. The advice may be good in theory, but since they don't have to meet you and get to know you and be accountable to you, it's less about your actual growth and it's likely more about your wallet. Because all that great advice often piles up and clashes And it leaves you feeling more confused than clear, more frustrated than free, which is exactly why you keep reaching for the next program, the next book, the next quick fix. Everywhere you turn, someone has advice for how to live, how to love, and how to grow. And it all sounds so inspiring, yet it ends up leaving you feeling frustrated with yourself. You start to say to yourself, this is all great advice, but I can't seem to make it work. So I guess I'm just not good enough or strong enough to do it. Because you tried to follow it all. You read the books, you watched the videos, you listened to the podcast, hoping that this time you'd finally figure it out. But it's all just so confusing. One day Jordan Peterson tells you to get disciplined and bring order to your life. The next day, Brené Brown insists that real strength comes from softening, being vulnerable, and embracing your flaws. So am I supposed to be tough or soft? Then Matthew Hussey tells you relationships thrive on closeness and consistency and emotional safety. But Esther Perel says that desire and passion only survives with distance and mystery and space. So which is it, closeness or distance? It seems like the more advice you listen to, the more confusing it gets, and the more stuck you feel. All these great people with loud voices are saying powerful things, and you're trying to listen. But with no one to help you put it all into context, it feels impossible to figure out how it applies to you. And that's the point. The information is powerful, but it's not in context because they don't know you. You can't talk to them and get feedback. They can't listen to you and help you understand what it means based on who you are. That's why Discover U is different. You get the ability to interact with the host, to ask questions, to challenge ideas, and to explore context. If you attend one of my events, you can ask me questions. The truth is, when you're reading a book or listening to a podcast, you're perceiving the information through your filter. And that filter is often clouded by old emotions and unhealed wounds. Without interaction and understanding, the advice can feel confusing. All these voices are telling you different things, and you're trying to change patterns and adopt principles that don't feel natural. And that's because you haven't healed yet. You're listening through the perspective of your wounds, but the advice is being presented for someone who's already healed enough to use the information effectively. For example, someone tells you to set firm boundaries, but if you've never healed the wounds around the guilt and fear of disappointing people, that advice isn't empowering. It will likely even make you feel worse because you can't implement it. The advice isn't wrong, you just aren't ready for it yet. That's why the words make perfect sense in your head, but it feels impossible for you to put into practice. You don't need more advice. What you really need is to know yourself first, to uncover your patterns, your unhealed wounds, and your emotional triggers. Because it's only once you can see yourself clearly that the advice that you hear will finally make sense. Growth isn't about choosing who to listen to, because they're all good. They all give great advice. But that advice lands differently depending on where you're at in your growth journey. Think of it like a puzzle. Each piece of advice— setting boundaries, loving yourself, taking responsibility, healing, developing emotional awareness— they're all an important part of the whole picture. But without the other pieces, the picture will always be incomplete. It's only when you understand how all the pieces connect, how each skill supports and reinforces the others, That the full picture begins to appear. Boundaries, self-love, responsibility, healing, and emotional awareness all work in tandem, creating a strong, stable foundation, like puzzle pieces snapping into place, and finally giving you a life where the advice you've been hearing actually begins to work. You can't just learn to instantly set boundaries. To do it effectively, you need communication skills. so that you can express your limits clearly. You need self-love so you actually believe you deserve those boundaries. It helps to have kindness and empathy so you can hold your boundaries without pushing people away unnecessarily. You need emotional awareness so you can recognize when your boundaries are being tested and can respond rather than react. Each skill is a piece of the entire puzzle, and if you don't have all the pieces, there are going to be gaps. The picture won't ever be complete. Growth only works when you have all the pieces and understand how they all fit together. Once again, each one supporting and reinforcing the others. Real growth happens only once you begin to understand that you need to see the full picture first, and that's knowing yourself.
