Bryan Johnson uses vagus nerve stimulation devices to keep his nervous system in a relaxed state, claiming a 12-year improvement in heart-rate variability. He wears the device for an hour each morning and before bed, arguing that staying in "chill mode" rather than fight-or-flight improves sleep and slows aging.

I've been spending millions of dollars on building an anti aging protocol. You may have heard me speaking about heart rate variability, which is a measure of your nervous system and whether you're in fight or flight stressed out mode or whether you're in chill mode. And the objective is to be chill all the time, to not get stressed out. And so we as a team have been exploring all kinds of devices that help you become more chill, which means you sleep better, longer, you feel happier. So this device, for example, which I've shown in the past, is something you put on your ear. I do this for an hour a day, every morning. And this device goes on the neck. But whatever the device, whether it's on the ear, the neck, the chest, they're all targeting the vagus nerve. And by doing that, by stimulating it, you improve its tone and its health. So I use this device one hour before I go to bed, and then if I wake up at night, I can use it again, and it usually puts me back to sleep immediately.
