But if you're here, you likely want to start and scale a profitable business in the online space, specifically using Instagram. So by the end of this training, this video, I'll walk you through 10 easy, real ideas that you can do, some in less than five minutes. Let's dive in.
Hi, I'm Beverly Simpson, former fitness manager turned online personal training business owner. And this podcast is where smart fitness professional professionals, including trainers and clinicians, discover how to increase client performance in movement, package and position their products and services, and get out of their own way so that they can increase their revenue to live a life that they love without sleazy sales. Welcome to the PT Profit Podcast.
If you're new around here, welcome. Thank you so much for tuning in to another episode of the PT Profit Podcast. I'm your host, Beverly Simpson. I'm a former district fitness manager. I've grown two multiple six figure businesses online. In fact, one has now just crossed that seven figure mark. I've learned a thing or two and I've done it even with a handful of followers. First by growing this account to 17,000 followers, and now this account just under 4,000 for now. But I sold my first 500k with less than 2,000 followers. So today we're diving into how people like you, who might not feel like a content creator actually reeks through the noise. Because if you've been following me on Instagram for a while, you might have seen that I love to do fun editing visual hooks like this. And while it's fun for me because I'm a creative and this is how I'm, I'm unleashing my creative ability. That doesn't mean you need to do fancy visual effects and polished content like that in order to generate revenue online. But before I get into those 10 real ideas, which are amazing, I need to give you some context around how I think through content. So the way that I think of content first starts from the top. Pillar content. Now, I'm sure I've broken this down for you in previous trainings, but in case, just in case for refresh, repetition is the mother of all learning. So pillar content is going to be what your methodology is about. What, what are the pillars of content that you like to talk about? So for me, in my method, there are three main pillars. We have product, we have position, and we have plan. For a lot of my clients, they're usually a variation or form of mindset, Meals, movement. These are the core pillars of your message, not pillars of content like motivation Monday, workout Wednesday. Not like that. I'm thinking pillars of if you. This is, these are the core topics that you or these are the core essence of what you talk about. And underneath those pillars they're going to be different topics like nutrition, carbs, fats, habits, culture of eating. Lots of different topics underneath that pillar of content. So that is more about your methodology and what it is that you are here to talk about in relationship to your ideal client. And so then underneath the pillars you have the different topics. Now underneath the topics, once you have those two core components, we can really position the content into three main categories, which is shifting perspective. Because remember, all of your clients are operating from mistakes or misconceptions. So you need to shift perspective. Bucket one, bucket two is results in advance. So this is your educational content. This is your how to. This is your value. Add your, your educational pieces of content. These are the ones that demonstrate you are an authority. The difference between telling and showing. This is where if they take this action, they'll get a result that is good that they want and think, oh, this process really works. So this is results in advanced content. This is your say yes content. This is the content that you are, your promotional content that is a clear path to taking the next step. Whether it is buy something, whether it's DM me, it's it's say yes content. So you have your shifting perspective content, you have your results in advanced content and your say yes content. Those are the three categories. Now what's amazing about these different categories is I can take a pillar content and one topic and create a topic piece that's going to go into each one of these categories. Then underneath it we have the content type. Now for me, I like to teach five pieces of content which is you've got your polarizing piece. So this is the one that is shifting, limiting belief, shifting, shifting industry norms. This is the one that is your. Where you are really helping people identify that you think this is the problem, but this is the real problem. Sometimes people will think of this as call out content. And what I notice a lot after working with hundreds of coaches online specifically, but also in person in in over my 10 years career, what I see happens a lot when people are trying to get onto this trend of calling people out for the good of others. Typically people accidentally will call people out without backing up their claims. So there's a big difference between trying to be right and trying to help people get results. There's a big difference between trying to to be, you know, call out annoying pet peeves than actually shifting people's perspective. And people get this wrong. And even a lot of popular people who have risen to popularity through call out content use because I said so as a reason for their stance. That's dangerous in my opinion. Why? Because the, the as fast as you rose to the top, the people you met on the way up are going to be the same people that you meet on the way down. And just as fast as you can go up. Just as fast as you can go down. Also, this is how I sleep at night essentially is that my intention is not to hurt other people. It's not to bring other people down. My intention is to shift perspective of my people who are suffering, suffering and struggling and need a new, better, different way. So I'm not trying to make other people wrong. I'm trying to get my people result. So you can be polarizing and kind. And the way to do that is to be convicted in what it is that you are here to share and to say back up your claims and reasons so that you can hold space for the fallout. Because if people get mad or upset or irritated at me or say things like I look like Ms. Trumbull online, which they have said that to me, I, I can laugh that off. I don't personalize that or think, oh my gosh, they're right. Because I'm not insecure. I am certain in what I am posting in the, in the online space. I also give myself a ton of grace to change my mind, to grow to say I'm sorry and, and be wrong. That takes courage. Acting with fear, not mitigating or leaving fear, which could be a whole nother episode, but polarizing. Now your results in advanced content. This is your educational content. So, so I think of these as how tos and value adds. Now the other thing I also want to say is in your polarizing pieces, you could also, you could also layer in educational pieces of content. In a polarizing piece, you could also layer in connection content. So connection content is your story content is your case study content. This is also your content that, that demonstrates your authority and expertise. This is also content that, that that demonstrates your relatability. So you have polarizing connection pieces. You could have educational education, you can have educational connection pieces. So instead of how to X, Y, Z, you instead say how I did X without Y, how we do X without Y. Or you have a polarizing piece that I wanted to quit, but then I realized I was doing all of the things I'm supposed to do. But then this happened how I stopped dieting and did blah blah blah. That can technically be considered polarizing because it goes against the norm of what people traditionally do. People learn through the story over time. We have seen this time and time again. So your connection pieces also demonstrate that you get these people they that you understand your clients deeply. So this speaks a little bit to the last the algorithms episode that I created about what are the pieces of content that you can create that are relatable that will be shared. So typically people see relatable content that is shared and relatable and entertaining. So how as a professional can you use that type of relatability content that instead of just being vulnerable for for funsies you can actually use like a funny meme or a funny video and put context around why taking the next step is really important. Or let me show you how for free stuff that gets shared. So and if you're not sure, think about what you share because remember from the algorithms episode, Instagram is really looking at how you show up as signals so of the content types polarizing connection educational which is your how to and then you have your value add. So these are your educational pieces of content that aren't necessarily Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 How to get vegetables at breakfast Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 versus the nutritional differences between a sweet potato and a white potato. Now something I want to also share and offer to you is that you might find that one piece of top like one content topic is going to be better suited for one type of piece. So you could in theory take one topic and create all different types of content pieces, all five types in that one topic. You might find that your content topic will will yield a better result with how to versus a value add. Maybe. So for example, if I'm going to teach how to get more protein at breakfast or how to stay fuller longer when I'm on a fat loss journey, my value add that compliments that topic is going to be the truth about protein no one talks about or the truth about protein you might not realize. So is an educational piece with a curiosity driven hook then your motivational pieces, your inspirational motivation type pieces. One of my accelerators asked me about this the other day and I laughed because I was like listen, I'm terrible at that piece but I have to put it in there because it is they are pieces that work. But they said can you give me an example of a motivational piece you used? No, I cannot.
Why?
Because I'm Terrible at them. I feel so cheesy when I do them. But you see them all the time. People love them. And oftentimes those motivational pieces get shared a lot. Me personally, I'm not particularly good at them. Listen, I can own my strengths and my weaknesses, okay? And so then when you have the types, those five main types, now we can start to layer in the actual creative and caption and how they work together. Now, hopefully, if you've been following along with me, that feels really exciting to you because it actually means that creating content is easier now than ever. You could take literally one topic idea and turn it into a gajillion pieces of content. So let's get into 10 easy, real ideas for more views, more leads, and more customers and clients foreign coming in at the easiest. Number one is B roll. So what is B roll? B roll is any type of scenery footage where you literally are just living your life and you've got the camera up and recording. I love B roll because B roll, you can literally create a bucket of B roll and literally just film your doing your life. Like just you're working out. Put your phone up and work out. Now, if you don't work out and if you work out in a gym in a public space and you don't feel comfortable working out in front of people or filming in front of people because you don't want Joey Swole coming at you, I get it. Me neither. I wouldn't either. So here's what I would say. Can you, you don't have to film your whole workout. Can you film a section of your workout and ensure that you are not, you know, being a jerk and you're actually kind and that you are filming in an area where not other people are going to be in your footage. And then also don't call out other people and make fun of other people that are in your footage. So if that, you know, as long as you don't do that, then you probably are going to be a okay in Joey Swole's book. Book. But listen, I get it. And I also don't like, as a content creator, I don't particularly love being in other people's footage. So just be courteous and treat others the way you want to be treated. But if you're worried that people are judging you, I'm going to say this. I get it. Me too. I don't like to be judged. But here's the truth of the matter. You're going to be judged 100% of the time, whether they like you or don't like you? And isn't it more important to do what you love than it is to worry about people who are not not going to be paying your visa bills and your mortgage? And besides, people are so focused on what they're doing, they might not even notice that you're filming. But if not, then pick a different place to, to film your workout. You know, even if it's not your particular workout, can you do a workout movement at home that, that you can use for B roll? Remember, we're not, we're not ne even necessarily creating a roll types of content where it's direct to camera speaking. We're just filming day in the life pieces of content. Once you have your B roll actually collected, what I like to do is create an album that has a B roll option. So I literally just have tons of videos of me doing a whole bunch of nothing or just living my every single day life. Some of them are 13 minutes, some of them are shorter, some of them are longer. And then what I do is I will edit my movie or edit my piece of content to have quick movements in my piece of content. Well, let me show you how. I would take a long piece of content and turn it into a reel and edit it to have those fancy quick jump cuts that restate people's attention less than five minutes. Then I'm going to show you how to save it so that you can do later down repurpose your piece of content and do it all within the Instagram app. And you don't even need other fancy editing tools. First, you're going to select your B roll. You're going to upload it into the Reels app. Let's make reference. You're going to upload it into your actual reel. You're going to hit next, Then you're going to hit edit and you're going to just use, you can just take your piece of content once you've hit edit and you can go 1, 2 seconds and then do a edit and you'll hit split and then, you know, delete it out. Split and then you know, delete this middle clip, okay, this card. And then you'll do another two seconds or one second even and you'll hit edit and then split. And then if you're not, if you're not, list. If you, if you're tuning into this episode on the podcast and you can't see what I'm doing, what I'm essentially doing is I'm taking long pieces of content and I'm Going a second and then I'm clipping it or cutting it, splicing it on Instagram and then I let it run for two seconds and I splice it again. So then what, what that ends up doing is it creates a jump cut so it's not just one continuous long video. Okay. And then I jump cut it all the way up to seven. So you know, seven to nine seconds. Okay. Now the reason I'm doing this is it re. And the point of this, okay, is to just reset people's attention to make it visually interesting. Okay. And then so I can have a visually interesting piece of content of B roll underneath what I'm about to create. Okay. So now and, and on top of that, if I've created a 13 minute clip, I could have a hundred different pieces of B roll clips from that 15 minute or 13 minute clip just by doing this. Okay? So Now I have 11 seconds of jump cut B roll underneath it. And now I'm going to write my text. I'm in the app. Okay. Now for the record, just so you know, if I don't want to use the text and I just want to use this clip and have this clip multiple times, then before I put in the text, I'm going to slide over until I see save. I'm going to select save and I'm going to save that to my camera roll. Then I'm going to put that video into a edited B roll folder so that I have hundreds of B roll that's already jump cut that I could just reuse it when we get later on. Okay, so now I've saved that piece of edited B roll. Now I'm going to go over here to text and I'm going to put in my hook. A POV hook my depending on whatever those above category types are. Now if you are listening to this and you're like, wait, how do I do this? Can I see this? I'm more visual. Then definitely grab 90 days done for you. Content. I have this document that will help you keep organized this organized and show you how you can take this one piece of content that we're creating. Listen, we're on number one. Okay. And create multiple pieces of content. So that'll be in the show notes. So click the link around the video. So pov, you're a trainer. You're a trainer who wants to grow online. Okay, I'm gonna put that there. Okay, Then what I'm gonna do is I'm going to save that. I'm gonna save that clip and now it's in my rule, it's in my camera roll. Okay, so now I'm going to hit next and then, now I've got a reel and then I'm going to go to volume and I'm going to just turn down the clip because I was talking in that clip and now I. And, and, and then what I'm going to do is when I hit next, it's going to show me the clip ready to put my caption in. So I'm going to save draft so that I can have it. Then it's going to pull me to my recent tab and so my new reels tab. So I'm going to come out of that menu, I'm going to go to the drafts tab, I'm going to select three, and I'm going to duplicate it, the three little dots and I'm going to duplicate it. That way I have the reel that I'm about to post and then I'm going to post it. But I'm going to have a draft also in my draft so that I can just easily access content when I'm on the go or when I need, when I don't. When I, when I want to create more content, I have it in there. Okay, so now I post the piece of content through my B roll. That's from doing just my everyday life. Other options for B roll pieces of content is opening up your notes app. Write your educational piece like this on your notes app and you'll have and, and you'll screen record, screen record your phone and you'll have that piece of content as B roll and you're not even on. And then when you save it, you'll put it in B roll. Now option two, take your B roll with text on top of it and you can add a trending sound. So people often ask me, how do you find trending sounds? I'm going to give you three quick ways that you can find a trending sound. Number one is I literally will just scroll for two minutes if I see a trending song that is that that people are doing. And I won't scroll on my home feed. I'll scroll in the reels tab and I'll just search for three. You know, I'll just like literally scroll and if I hear a sound more than three times, then I'm going to use that and save it as a trending aud. Okay, that's one thing that I'll do. The other thing that I'll do is I will go over to create A reel. And I will put the reel in there and I'll hit next and I'll see audio. It will give me three tabs. It gets me four traps tabs for you. Trending original audio saved. So I go to the trending tab and I scroll for a little bit and I see that little arrow down at the bottom that's pointed up. I can see that those are songs that are trending. So I'll select one of those trending audios. The third way that I select trending audios is I will go to my homepage and I go to my professional dashboard. On my professional dashboard I could go down all the way down to the bottom. I see trending audio, I select trending audio and it's going to give me a list of audio that's trending. So I also go to the inspiration tab and in my inspiration tab I'm going to see what is similar to my content and I'm also going to see what is popular with my followers. I'll also look at suggestions and I'll see what audios are there. And from there I'll save those audios so that I can access them quickly. Me the fourth way. Bonus tip. The fourth way is I'll go to the other short form platform and I go to Creator Search insights. And in the Creator Search insights, it's going to show me suggested and trending. And from there I can see what audios will be popular on Instagram. If not now, definitely within the next 48, 72 hours. Now people ask me and they have asked me, how do I keep up with trends? The truth is I don't. I don't keep up with trends. I am the trend. Be the trend. Have courage to be the trend. It's more important to stay consistent, get your content out there than to do a ton of Instagram hacking. I'm giving you some best practices, but literally it takes me the amount of time that I'm showing you how to do it to execute a piece of content. So I'm not gonna doom scroll all day. I'm gonna literally spend a Sunday kind of collecting viewing or if so if I notice something that I like or something that is trending, then I'm going to use it. Okay, the third option, it's going to be the collaborations and stitches. So, so when you find a reel that you want to stitch, you're going to go over to those three little dots, you'll pull it up and you're going to do remix. Now you can remix it, hit Next, add something to the clip and that's going to be your remix. You can add your camera where you are literally talking or folding down the reel and talking over with the, with the remix green screen behind you. The other thing you can do is when you hit those three little dots and you hit C sequence, it's going to show a clip of the reel you hit next. And then your, your video footage will be after the sequence of the collab. That's the second way that you can do a collaboration or stitch in an easy, fast, five minute way. Now there are other ways that you can do collaborations that is slightly, a little bit more advanced, but you can download the video, you can pull the video down and then do what you see a lot of people do, which is responses. But sometimes that takes a little bit more editing and may. And if you don't have the capacity to do that, no worries. You could do collaborations or stitches or remixes in the same way. Number four, I want to show you how you can do a fast, easy carousel type of post with photos. There are two main places that you could do it. The first is go to your Instagram app, go to Story, hit camera, and take a photo of yourself. Then you're going to go to those three little dots at the top and I want you to hit save. Just save this, this reel or this photo that you can use multiple times. Okay? Then you'll hit the little, the little text button and you'll write your hook, put it in the middle of your photo and then you'll go back to those three little dots and you'll hit save. So now that is slide one. Then you'll take that text, delete it, and you'll write your second, write your second line, put it in that same spot, three little dots and save it. So we are creating carousels through your actual story. So that's option one. Option two, if you have multiple different images is you'll go directly to your feed, hit that plus hit post, select the photo and hit multiple and select multiple photos and videos that you want to use for your, for your footage. Okay? Then when you hit next, it's going to prompt you to put text, music, photos, effects, filters on the actual, on the actual text or on the actual photo. And you can create carousels right here. Okay? And you can do it for each slide. And that's how you take, that's how you can create carousels within the app. Then you add your music and you can use saved, you can use for you. And then your, your carousel Will or, or even your, your infograph will then be seen on the Reels tab or has potential to be seen on the Reels tab. Okay, option number five. So we're going from easiest to hardest. Now we're going to go into trending lip sync. So this is where you take an, an audio that has been used a lot and people are lip syncing with the actual audio. Sometimes they active and they're active in their skits. Now these take a little bit more time, sometimes costume changes. So depending on how more, how advanced you want to be, that's also an option. Now we're going to go into some of my favorite ways that you can create content fast. So number 6, 7 and 8 is repurpose, restate and reuse. So when I say repurpose, I mean that go into. Whenever you create a reel in the way that I showed you earlier, I save a draft so that I can have dozens and dozens and dozens of drafts that if I'm ever in a, in, in a tight spot or I didn't plan or I didn't schedule, I just hit from my draft. Now sometimes if I didn't do that, I'll go over to the, the Insta the Snap Insta on Safari and I will Download my own TikTok. I will download my own video clip so that I can have access to the audio to the clip so I can literally reuse it, copy and paste, literally. Why 3% of your audience sees your content, let alone new followers and every real or new potential followers and every, every reel. Now given the algorithm change which I talked about in a previous episode, you have more opportunity now than ever to reach non followers. So the chances that someone saw that post that you posted yesterday again is, is plight. Not to mention the fact someone might think oh I saw this already and they're just reusing it or they don't even register that they already saw this because every time you change one component, whether it is the hook on the the text, whether it's the first thing you say, maybe it's a voiceover, maybe it's the first line of the caption, it is a new piece. So that's what I mean when we're going to restate. So take the exact same piece of content that you just created and change one variable, whether it's the title on screen, whether it's the first line of the hip hop, maybe it's something that you voiceover that's a new piece of content. Maybe you take that exact piece and then turn it into a carousel that we just talked about earlier. So that's repurposing your content. So then if you're going to restate it, meaning, say it again. But maybe now this time it's going to be different. Maybe you. Maybe you have bigger changes than just one variable that you're changing. So maybe you're going to speak directly to camera the exact same thing that you did in a reel. This is going to be something that you're restating. Or maybe you're going to do the exact same piece again, but you're going to do it differently. Maybe the B roll will be different. Maybe the A role, what you say directly to camera will be different. So that goes to number nine. The hardest one for people is to just directly speak to camera. So that is challenging for you. Then do the other one through eight options. There's nothing that says you have to speak camera. Now, it's true. People usually connect with people when they see them. Okay, so if you want to practice getting your voice, if you want to practice doing a roll or getting your voice out on the Internet, I'm going to rec. And two things. I want you to hit record and I want you to be. Just pick a friend. Pretend the camera's your friend. And I want you to start with, hey, Sally, how are you doing today? Oh, yeah, me too. Oh, that's a great question. And then speak to your camera. Speak to the camera as if it's a friend. And then pretend the camera's asking you the question and you're going into the answer. And then just cut out all that part, the beginning part. Or, or. Or do what everyone does. And you know, oh, I'm not supposed to do that, but go, hey, Instagram family, Happy Wednesday. Today. We're. And then just cut all that beginning part out and go right into today we're talking about. So do whatever it is that you need to do in the beginning of the camera or the beginning of the part of the. The piece. And then trust that you will be competent enough to cut all that out. The other option that you could do when you are practicing getting your voice out is do the B roll option number one, and then just do the voiceover on top of your piece of content so that you can practice saying what it is that you want to say. Now, number 10 is a little bit harder, a little bit longer than five minutes. But these are your lives. These are your videos where you could go and collaborate with someone else so that you can borrow other people's audiences, where you can grow together. So you could go live. You could go live together, you could collaborate on a carousel together. But these are your pieces of content that are maybe a little bit more involved, but options that you can create to generate more leads, more sales and more clients. So if you need a little bit more support, then check out the links inside of the of the show notes. I have a ton of options for you. Otherwise I'll catch you on the next episode. Great job here.
