Hi, I'm Beverly Simpson, former fitness manager turned online personal training business owner. And this podcast is where smart fitness professionals, including trainers and clinicians, discover how to increase client performance in movement, package and position their products and services and get out of their own way so that they can increase their revenue to live a life that they love without sleazy sales. Welcome to the PT Profit Podcast. What's up, coach? And welcome to another episode of the PT Profit Podcast. I'm your host, Beverly Simpson. And let's go ahead and dive in. So I'm laughing because my team is honestly, they're going to hate me because it's currently Sunday and I have recorded this particular episode three times. This is the third time. Now, for those of you who know me, you know that I operate from this place. 70% perfect is done. If you're going for a hundred percent, you're too late. And this is because perfection usually comes from this place of fear. But this is not what that was about. I wasn't like, oh, I'm afraid people. I didn't, I wasn't feeling fear, but something was just not sitting right with me in this episode. I felt like I wasn't getting what I really wanted to say out. I felt like it wasn't clear. And I like to give you some tangible, hit the ground action steps to do in each episode that you could actually walk away and start implementing and seeing results. And I felt like, I just felt like I didn't do that. So here I am on Sunday recording it. My team is like, beverly, what are you doing? Because this episode is coming out on Tuesday. And for the record, I try very hard not to do work on the weekends, but my husband's home and so I just thought I would squeeze this in and redo it. And because I'm coming from a place of clarity, it's going to give you some more actionable steps. But if you hear some noise in the background, that's why. So let's dive in. Four things I did to grow my business past that six figure mark. Number one, get into alignment. Now, I really searched for different ways to say this, and I've said this in a couple of episodes. Like when I talked about the five mistakes that I wish I had gotten faster. But friends, for me, what happened was that, and I'll keep this short because I think I've shared This before, but for me, I have a background in personal training, but also in sales. And what happened is I got a job. Well, first of all, I came here for musical theater. And so when I was in musical theater, I had just this belief that my perfect job was on the other side of fixing my body. So it led me to fitness. And what happened was that I had this other belief where I felt like the theater industry was just a narcissistic industry and that I'm laughing because I got into fitness. Like that somehow wasn't. But it wasn't in the sense that I had this experience of helping somebody else and seeing how that felt. And so. So I felt like I need to switch. I need to do personal training. This is what I'm meant to do. And it was funny because someone had told me when I was studying for acting, they said, if you love something else, do something else. And what I realized now, what she was really saying is that if you don't love the process, you won't be. And so what I realize now what she was really saying is you have to love the process more than the outcome, because you're going to spend more time in the process than you are in the outcome. And so what happened was I just dived into personal training. And anyone who know who's ever worked at a gym there is a huge sales component when it comes to working inside of a gym. And so I was the fastest personal trainer to go from personal trainer to assistant fitness manager to fitness manager to district fitness manager, player coach. So by the end of my career at corporate, I was running five Manhattan gyms in the. In the New York and New Jersey area. And I was responsible for hiring and developing personal trainers and fitness managers and helping them become better leaders. So then I came into the online space and all of a sudden I just felt like I can't translate my skills. I can't translate what I love to do and what I love to help people do. And so it just took me a long, long, long time. And I kept resisting it. I kept resisting, I kept getting signs and I kept resisting it. And I think that this is, you know, one of the paradox that happens inside business and inside any type of goals is the sense that there is there, there's a difference and a fine line. And sometimes it's hard to see the difference between being stubborn and continuing to do what you are resisting because you have these beliefs and think that supposed to look a certain way versus giving up when you're three feet from gold. And it can be hard to distinguish. And if someone were to ask me, well, Beverly, how do you. For me, it ultimately came down to what I wanted to do, what was going to get me up in the morning when it felt hard. Because no matter what you decide, even if you're doing what you love every single day, you're gonna have moments where you don't like it or you have to do something that isn't fun. This is where discipline is gonna serve you and you have to ask yourself those questions. And this is where, you know, I was gonna put this in here, but I couldn't because I've said it so many times. But this is where detachment and looking at your work correctly is going to be play a really key, important role because you have to ask yourself some hard hitting questions about where you are, about what's causing you to feel like you're not where you want to be. And then once you say yes, because that's what happened to me. Once I said yes to what I wanted to do, what I've always wanted to do, when I finally took my skills and translated it into the space in the way that I wanted, my business blew up. And it was easy and it was light and it was fun and I really helped a lot of people and continue to help a lot of people. There's so many beliefs that just roam around the about, you know, we see it all the time time and time again. People say things like, oh, you know, I can't work with, I can't be a trainer because I don't look the part of a trainer. I don't have a six pack. And it crushes me when I hear stuff like that because A, your body's not a business card. And we're going to do a whole nother episode on that. A, your body's not a business card and B, what you can do for your own personal body skill, hormones, it has absolutely nothing to do with your clients. And I think this is where clients get into a lot and where people get into, into trouble because they, they purchase and invest in people that, that they think are going to help them get the same results as them. But then it can't happen. It doesn't happen because your body's not a business card. And just because a person looks a certain way doesn't mean that they can, they can get their client the same result. I mean, I think of it like this. If you're a mom and you're a having a baby, are you going to go to your girlfriend who had a baby and ask her to deliver the baby just because she had one? Or are you going to go to the OB GYN who's skilled and spent years of study and education and knows what they're doing? But what if your OB GYN is a dude, he's never had a baby, so are you not going to trust him to deliver your baby? No, of course not. Or I look at things like Steven Spielberg, right? He is an incredible director, but he's never been the star actor inside of his. Inside of his films. Does that mean that he shouldn't be directing actors and we could even go another step further. Actors. Chances are they haven't been shot at, killed, knifed yet. They play that part all the time. We believe him. So really, ultimately, at the end of the day, it's not about you and your skills. It's about what you can do and what you can demonstrate and show for your clients. But we get into so many misconceptions, beliefs and feelings about what it should be and what it shouldn't be. And that was true for me. So it took me a long time to translate my skills and get it on online and to do what I ultimately love and wanted to do. The second thing I'll say is declare it. Declare your goals out loud and then go for it. And I was going to say, you know, go for it at all costs, but that's not true. I'm not saying like, sacrifice your mental health. And I also think that a lot of, of trainers, we have to really work against our hustle mentality. And we have to work because we are used to grinding and we're used to going all out. But at all costs just means that at the face of anyone who says you can't is really what I'm saying, because it's going to come up. People that you're hanging out with, people are going to say, no, you're not supposed to do that. People are going to say, what are you doing? This is craz. Or people are going to push evidence of your failures in front of you and say, oh, see, you've tied it. It didn't work. See, look what's happening. You, this didn't work. But you're either going to get the lesson that you need or the success that you want. Now listen, this doesn't mean, you know, at, you know, at all costs, meaning your mental health, your physical health, your financial. I'm not saying get into, you know, financially underwater. You need to be able to. And every business person will tell you this. You know that you need to be able to have this. Discretionary. Discretionary. Or you need to be able to take calculated risk. Don't put yourself in a. You know where you're going to get underwater. But. But you are. Or don't put yourself in a position where you know you could potentially lose your house. That's not what I'm saying. You want to be able to take calculated risk. But you want that. But risk is the pivotal word here. You want to take the risk because your brain is going to fight you. And this is what's going to get me into number three. So you must declare it, say it out loud with conviction, even if it is hairy and scary. And then surround yourself with people. This is going to lead me really to number three. So I'm going to give you a bonus one. Or this is like 2.5. I'm going to say 2.5. But surround yourself with people that say yes. And because you're going to have people tear you down, people are going to say, no. This isn't right. You need to be able to surround yourself with people that say, yep, cool, let's get you there. We can do it. Surround yourself with those people. It's so important. And which is going to lead me to number three, which is now that you've committed it, committed, you have to level up. And another way to say level up is to, you know, start figuring out the how. And then. And the only way that you're going to know that you've gotten here is if you get uncomfortable, because as I'm sure you know, as a fitness professional, is that your brain is going to protect you. It's going to protect you. It's going to send you fear, urgency, urgent urges. It's going to say, no, no, no, this isn't safe. This isn't who we are. This isn't what we do. This. You can't do this. And so you have to get yourself comfortable with being uncomfortable, because that's when the leveling up is going to change. That is when the growth is going to happen, is when you are getting uncomfortable. You need to show your brain this is who you are, and this is what you do is imperative. And so what does that look like? It can look like many different forms. You know, listen to podcasts, you're here, it's already here. It's already happening. Read a book, start figuring out the how. Purchase a course, start figuring out the how. Start getting uncomfortable with being uncomfortable and then with the how. It's really important That I want you to know this because I don't want you to make the same mistake as I did, is that I used to. There's a difference between knowing something and understanding something. Realistically, I knew. Oh, oh, yeah. I'm not a victim. Life is happening to me. Not for me or life has happened. See, you know, realistically, I, you know, I understood. I understood analytically. The concept of life is happening for me, not to me. But I didn't operate my life from there. I really operated from. I can't believe this is happening to me. Why isn't this working? I'm doing everything right. These are all things that I would say to myself. And not recognizing a. That that's not true. Because if it was true, it'd be working. There's always something to uncover. And even if it is working, listen, life's gonna change. Marketing landscapes, things change. There's always gonna be a puzzle to figure out, which is why you have to love the process. Because the pro, because that's the fun part, is figuring it out. But you have to be able to know what you're looking for. That was one thing that took me a really long time, and that was why I was operating from a place, is because that there's always gonna be something to learn. But if you don't know what that is, then it's going to feel like life's happening to you. Now, when I got a course and that really laid out for me, exactly what is, you know, what to look for if things aren't, you know, what are the targets that I'm going for that I get to create for myself? That's the best news. I get to create and do all of this myself. Once I knew that, then I was able to, to look at my business and, and start mapping it out and looking at it from a place of detachment, looking at it from a place clinically, that was the key factor for me. And then the last thing I'll say is getting a coach. Because once you knew, once you know the how, right. A coach can help you see things that you can't see. And I want to say coaching, you know, it's not just about one on one, right? Having you can. And that's because, you know, kind of leads to my bonus tip, which is that 2.5, which is get yourself around people that are doing what you are, want to do. And I know it can be scary because you're thinking, oh, I don't want to compare myself or their competitors and I just want eyes on My own paper. But listen, there's plenty of opportunity out there. Your clients are going to resonate with you. And if you see someone who's doing what you want to be doing, that is a good thing. Why? Because it is evidence that what you want is possible. And what they can do, you can do. And when you put yourself in a room of those people, it's going to change you. When I got into my mastermind, I met some of my best friends in there. And when I look out into this space and I look at our colleagues, right, doctor, Dr. Pat Davidson and Dr. Ben Hows, they met at a fitness conference that they were sitting next to each other and now they've done tons of, of collabor networking. And you know, and I get it, it's, it's, we're in, we're in Covid times. If you're listening to this now, in 2020 or when this comes out, we're in pandemic time. So it has been challenging, but there are ways to do it, which is why I love the Internet space and the online space, because it is so magical. Okay, so those are my tips. So let's just go ahead and recap your big takeaways. So the four things I did to get past that six figure mark and it's ultimately what's going to be that $1 million financial year, that's, this is exactly what I'm going to do to do that 2021. It is my mission to help thousands of fitness professionals generate the revenue online that they want to make inside of their business by helping them build sales systems inside of their business. Now what's awesome is that the process and the plans, it's all laid out there for you. You just get to repeat it, repeat the process, fine tune it, test, tweak it and just know what you're looking for. So here are the four things. One, get in alignment. Just make sure you're doing what you love to do. It's going to help you get out of bed, do what you are called to do. Number two, declare it and declare your goals and then figure out the how. The 2.5 was you get in the room or surround yourself with people that are going to support you and help you get there. And then number three, figure out the how level up. This is the how to. And then number four, which was get a coach. And also this is kind of your 2.5, get a coach and community. Because we get so close to our stuff that you can't change what you can't see. Okay, so there you have it. I'm so happy that I rerecorded it. I feel so much better. This is exactly what I wanted to get out to you. So if you're here and you're still curious about okay Beverly, this is awesome. How can I implement this in my life right now in November, November of 2020?
