The content features Beverley Simpson as the sole speaker sharing her personal experiences and insights on building a profitable online personal training business. She discusses the challenges health professionals face in scaling their businesses, the importance of a pressure-free sales system, and her own recent health and family struggles that reinforced the need for sustainable revenue streams. The episode also offers practical advice on sales mindset, value delivery, and managing expectations for fitness professionals looking to grow their business.
If you're a health professional who is looking or serving clients at any capacity, whether it's one on one or one to many, then you are running a business. The problem so many smart and struggling coaches face is that they don't teach you how to start and scale a profitable business in school, in PT certifications, in education. They just don't really teach you how to do that. So the real issue for a lot of smart coaches is they end up only getting paid when they show up. And the real issue is that if you don't have a way to generate revenue every single day, then your business is far more volatile than you might even realize. Because what are you going to do if you get hurt, if your kids get hurt, if someone that you love gets hurt and you need to take care of them, and if you don't have a way to generate revenue as a business without being present, what are you going to do?
Hi, I'm Beverly Simpson, former fitness manager turned online personal training business owner. And this podcast is where smart fitness professionals, including trainers and clinicians, discover how to increase client performance and movement, package and position their products and services and get out of their own way so that they can increase their revenue to live a life that they love without sleazy sales. Welcome to the PT Profit Podcast.
What's up coach? Thank you so much for joining me in another episode of the PT Profit Podcast. I'm your host, Beverly Simpson, a former district fitness manager for a Nashville gym responsible for bringing in $2.1 million per year just in my region alone. In addition to building two multiple six figure businesses online. I have learned a thing or two and today we're breaking down how I brought in $14,973 in seven days now. Full transparency. I have been in the industry for a minute. I have skill. I share this with you for educational purposes. But what I can do, you can do. In addition, that revenue is pretty consistent and sustainable. There are times where I've generated $7,000 in seven days. The point and what we're really diving into today is how we can keep healthy profit margins in the business so that you generate revenue without sacrificing clients success and results without you being present so that when life lifes, you can still life. If this is the first time that you're hanging out with me today, welcome. I'm super pumped that you're here. It'd be a huge favor to me if after this episode you literally screenshot this. Share this on your socials Tag me at B. Tell me what your biggest takeaways, ahas or even questions are. I love to hear from you. I want to help you and I want to help more people. Help more people. So when you share, it helps me get the message out to more people. So let's find it. I have a completely free training that I've created that has nothing to buy. So watch it. There's nothing to buy. At the end of it, there's no pitch. It's literally just a step by step protocol on how we use a combination of free low ticket and high ticket offers in a ascension model in our offer stack. Meaning we give people results in advance, we shift perspective and provide a clear path to take someone who's never heard of us before and convert them into a customer or client so that they can help more people. So if you want to learn more about how specifically to do that, then just check in the show notes because there's a training called simple scaling and it will really, it'll walk you through the step by step process. Otherwise we'll just be here on this episode today for ten hundred years and I don't definitely don't want to do that. So make sure that you have have heard that training and it walks you through like what specific offers we do, so on and so forth. So with that said, just know that we use a combination of free offers. So our free training specifically here on podcast YouTube, there's almost four episodes, so that's over 400 hour of literal step by step. This is exactly what you do. If you take this information and you implement it, then you could generate, you could build your own multiple six figure business just with the podcast information alone. However, the problem that so many coaches face is that it's really not about information. In fact information we're so inundated that people are just completely left confused used because there's so much conflicting information out there. In this phase, it's really a matter of implementation and making sure that you are getting through that stuck point and out of that valley of despair and going through and that really requires implementation and support. Whether it's going to be support from a coach to help you identify blind spots and roadblocks, or it's going to be support from your family, friends, colleagues. There's so many different ways to get the support that you need to implement. I just want to offer that to you because that's going to definitely be number one. And then to avoid the pitfalls, the three main pitfalls are really, I'm going to say four main Pitfalls that we are going to uncover today inside of this episode. Because listen, I don't know about you, but for me, 2025, and I'm laughing because it's already February. It's only February 23rd. There's so much time on the clock. But I'm going to tell you, life has lived. I have felt that 2025 has handed me my ass. I don't know if you follow me on social, but if you do, then you'll know that just this, this year, had, this winter has been just a brutal winner. I came down with COVID right at the end of 2024. So I had Covid and that just knocked me off my ass like for seven days. I just was so sick. I literally could not do anything. I mean I, I'm. I'm telling you just from the depths of my heart, I am so grateful to have this pressure free permission based sales system set up inside of my business because if my business only relied on me when I was not there, then I'm. When I was, when I was there, then I literally would just, I would not be here today talking to you. Like this is, it's just absolutely. I was so sick I couldn't even go to the bathroom. So that is a couple of things that have happened me to me this year. So. And so I went into 2025 sick and then my husband, we. He was cooking food and he cut off his fingers with the mandolin. And I am not kidding you, I've shared this with some of my friends and my clients. I was standing there looking at, watching him do it and fit. Fifteen minutes before he cut his finger. I was looking at him and I had this thought in my mind. I thought that thing is like really like janky. I wonder if it's supposed to be dangerous. I wonder if it is. Is sharp enough to actually cut off his fingers. And then God, universe, whatever you know, whatever you believe went, went. Okay, let me show you. And they sliced off his fingers. So when he sliced off his fingers, that put my husband out of work for two weeks. That meant that we were out of. He was at home. He could not do anything. He only had one access to one hand. We were in the er and we were in the ER for the whole day. In addition to that we. He couldn't do overtime. So we lost about four grand of his revenue coming in. Thank goodness the business is doing well and it was fine. But it was definitely an unexpected ouchie that we needed to deal with. Then the kids all got the flu. So now the kids are sick, my husband is sick, and then. I'm not even kidding you. Like, I couldn't even make this up if I tried. The next week, literally a week later, I was in the ER with excruciating back pain. I mean, the back pain that I was just bending down to tie my shoes before the. The workout ladies came over, came over, and I. It just seized. The way that I can explain it is that it felt like I was giving birth. It was like a contraction. But when you give birth, your contractions usually release. Like, you have a contraction and then it really contracts and then it release. Mine was not. Mine was contracting and then staying contracted, and it was just so painful. I mean, it was unbearable. I was literally screaming. There was a moment where I. It seems just so hard and so long that I couldn't get to the bathroom again. My husband, now my husband with a woman. I mean, it's comical. It was literally probably a comical, comical show. He's, like, holding me with one hand to get me to the restaurant because I am excruciating. I mean, I was crying. We went. We go. We had to go to the. Back to the er. We go back to the er. The er. They. They're like, there's nothing wrong. It's got to be muscular. And then they're like, just, you know, they. They tried to give me, like, pretty intense pain meds, but I am not a medication person. Just for the record, I don't like to put narcotics in my body. I don't even want narcotics in my house. When I was pregnant. And when I was. When I gave birth, I did not have any narcotics. I did not want them in my house. I. I just. I don't want them in my body. And they were, like, trying to get me to take it, and I was like, no, I don't want it. And so then they. I. I left. Then the next day, I was feeling better, so I was like, all right, let me just walk and maybe I will feel better. And then the next day after that, I was, no, I had to go back to the er. Now they do CT scans, and they did two kinds of CT scans. I had. Luckily, I have access to incredible clients who were telling me to ask these questions, telling me to do this, look at this. And. And I was in a lot of pain. And so. But basically, at the end of the day, then I went back to the ortho, so now I just have to go to pt. And, like, they're just basically saying, it's muscle tightness. And I'm doing much better. Thank you. And thank you so much to those of you who have reached out. You have sent me healing vibes, you've offered to help me, you've given me help. Like, I, I'm so grateful. I'm so, so, so, so grateful to you because I was just in excruciating pain. The point of me sharing this part of the story though, is that that pain was so bad and so painful, there was literally no way that I could work. Literally, I literally was in the. I had no access except pain receptors in my brain going off. Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain. And I was, it was excruciating. So then, so, so I was laughing because between, luckily my kids were not in school. Like, we had winter break this week, President's week, and so we were just a hot mess in the Simpson household. And I said, between me and my husband, the two of us, you know, we had two hands. So anyway, I was so grateful, so, so, so grateful that we have created this pressure free, permission based sales system because otherwise our clients would suffer, my team would suffer. Like, just all these things would have gone by the wayside and it would have been a really stressful experience. Luckily, we have that sorted. And so I want to share with you today the importance of having this because so many people get the selling stuff twisted. And I really, I really do. From like the depths of my heart. I really understand. And here's why. Like, I literally, I don't have my phone on me right now, but I literally had someone slide into my DMs the other day and tell me something about my YouTube. They were like, let me help you with the YouTube. And I just ignored it. Like, literally my DMs are flooded. And I know I've shared this before, but I have a lot of DMS that I'm navigating and the time that I block for, for Instagram specifically is a very low. So usually if it's not pertaining to my clients or work, I just like, delete, delete, delete. So anyway, this person slides into my DM and I ignored her. Then she sends me another dm. But it was like, really nasty. It was like, I can't believe that you as a business owner would ignore me and you are just that type of person and just like me really going after my character because I didn't respond to her unsolicited dm and I was like, just really blown away. And I was actually not mad at her and I was not mad at her or irritated at her because I, it just really like, I took a step back and I realized, oh, you were taught that someone taught, taught you and told you that this is how you generate business. So of course you have a horrible experience with DMing and, and I thought to myself, okay, so if she's doing this, she was taught that someone else is teaching them to do that and to some capacity. That stuff works because that's just given psychology at play. So it, it's kind of this, you know, when I, when I bring clients on board and when we're talking about sex selling just in general, of course you have fear around communicating the values and selling because no one wants to be sleazy and nobody wants to make someone feel bad. Okay? So of course you feel naturally apprehensive because you've likely experienced it yourselves. And it's just like any other tool on in the world, right? You could take a hammer and use a hammer to build a house. You could also take a hammer and take that and use that hammer to destroy the house. So it can be very confusing and convoluted when it comes to how you use a tool like specifically DMing and selling in general. So number one, you really need to be able to take a look at, like, a cold, hard look at your relationship to selling. Because the truth is that when you go into the grocery store or when you go and buy something, or even when you're in a natural conversation with your friend and they're like, oh my gosh, I just really love this cup. This cup is so great. And I love it. And here's why I love it. Those kinds of conversations are technically selling, but we don't think of it like that because we're just sharing value or we're just sharing our experience. And so that isn't selling to us because we have or we have experience or skewed views of what selling looks like. And not to mention the fact that people sometimes will even say it to you. Like, I can't believe that your page is so full of selling. You need to add a ton of value and build no, like, interest before you even ask me to buy something. And I, I always laugh when I hear that because I'm like, well, how do you know when you've added enough value? And what do you determine is valuable in that moment where I was just so blinded by the pain that I was in, if I had gone into the ER and they were like, oh, sorry, like, we, you know, we just met you, I need to Build mold I can trust before I admit you and then help you solve your pain. Oh, my go. I would have literally, like, blown a casket. Okay. I mean, I was already just in. In such excruciating pain. So you need to look at your relationship to selling. That's just number one. Because if you. And this is something I tell my clients all the time. And this is like, it just, it burns me. Like, I feel this pit in my stomach because so many of the smart and struggling coaches undervalue what they bring to the market space. There's this, this convoluted, you know, experience and, and mixed experience about what it is you bring to the market space. Because business is personal. Like, you cannot pour the majority of your time in your craft and in what it is that you do into your work because you love. Because, because, because you just wouldn't be able to do that. Like, you wouldn't be able to do that consistently. So of course it's personal, but it's not your worth. Your worth isn't determined by what it is that you do. And that gets so mixed up. And you're not alone. Of course, of course. Me too. Okay. So what happens is, is people undervalue what it is that they bring to the market space because they have so many feelings of like, I'm not ready, I'm not enough. And that's usually shows through in the high achieving high achievers curse. Me too. So it kills me when I, when I see these health pros that are pouring into people. Nobody's listening, nobody's paying attention, no one's saying yes to themselves. And instead they're falling for, falling for those pills, tricks, quick fixes, and, like, drinking their urine and eating orange peels with cinnamon on it. And they're literally doing all these things that are potentially harming them instead of listening to you. Which is exactly how parents feel when they're telling their kids, put your shoes on, put your shoes on, but your shoes on. And they just, like, don't have it. They're not listening. And then all of a sudden it's like sonar hearing when it's like, hey, should we take the kids to the movies today? So it's funny, but it's not funny. Right? You need to be able to. I want you to look at your relationship to selling because what you bring to the market space is valuable and it would be easy. It's far easier to listen to the noise in your head about how you're not enough, you're not ready, you need more certifications. You need to work harder, you need to add more value. You need to build, know, like, and trust. It's far easier to fall into that trap. It's also far easier to fall into that trap of feeling like what you do is invaluable because there's so many other people on the marketplace, but yet the majority of Americans are. Are struggling, are metabolically inflexible. And so, And. And they are succumbed to the nonsense on the Internet that people are not. That they have no problems sharing that. Of course it's nuanced because people start to think about, you know, intention and impact, and they wonder, oh, my gosh, am I part of the problem without realizing it. So that's one of the traps that people get into, is you just need to look at your relationship to selling. Okay, so now I've kind of talked about, number one, one of the common traps, which is they need to add value and build. No like and trust. And I kind of talked a little bit, and I just want to give you some tangible takeaways so that you know exactly. You know, what it. What I actually mean when we're talking about adding value is for me, and what I teach my clients is that value, you know, because I asked, how do you know when something's valuable for us? And what I teach is you need to shift people's perspective, because all of your people are in a problem, and they're either don't realize what the real problem is, and. Or they're doing all the wrong things to fix it. So they're operating from mistakes and misconceptions. Otherwise they wouldn't be in the problem, and they would assault it, just plain and simple. That's how humans are. So it becomes your job to provide the clarity. And I also shared earlier in this episode that people are so conflicted with information, they're inundated with information that they don't know the truth behind what's gonna work and what's gonna work for them. And so when you shift perspective and back up your claims, meaning you identify the real problem and you show them the real problem, then show them why this is the real problem, then they can lean in. Okay? Then you can educate them, which is give them results in advance. The majority of the Internet I've coined this term is edu. Splaining, meaning they're just explaining, explaining, explaining, teaching, teaching, teaching. And either it's coming from a hubris position, meaning they already have created an audience of people that. That are. Are the bought into what it is that they do so, so they can just say because I said so. But that's very dangerous because that as fast as you went up is as fast as you can go down. So I always want to back up my claim and this is how I can be polarizing in kind because I'm always shifting perspective. You want to know someone who does this really well, read the book by Dan Carnegie, how to make Friends and Influence people. Read that book because that's what I'm talking about. Making a case for what it is like for your perspective. Then you give them results in advance instead of just explaining, explaining and teaching where you show them instead of just tell them. Most of the Internet is edge explaining. That's why people don't listen. There's no context. They don't know. There's no context for is this going to work? Is this going to work for me? Is this going to work? Now why should I listen to you answer those questions in every single thing that you do? And I promise he was rebooting in won't matter how big your following is. Okay, the other trap that I fell into too in along that line of just adding value and building trust is I was launching. I launched on front. And I get why people need to make a buying decision and they need to make a buying decision now. Whether that buying decision is no, not yet, or yes, I'm ready. And so urgency and deadlines really help with that. But because I was kind of trapped in this like a feast or famine cycle where it was like, okay, I'm gonna launch, I'm gonna pour into this launch. There was on this pressure. And then in addition to the pressure, I was feeling ungrateful if I didn't make my targets. Like, oh man, I only got 10 people. Instead of really focusing on the 10 people who made a big investment in themselves. Wasn't a small investment. And I was like, right, my attitude. And of course I, I poured into them. It wasn't like I intentionally was being snobby about it. I was just left with my own high achieving nature. And then I was living in this like, okay, well I didn't hit that. So now I had to do this. And I wasn't living in the end. And it was causing me to put so much pressure on myself. I was losing sleep. I was, I had built my, my own prison, I had built my own job. I had built a closeout life which I, you know, was getting out of in the gym, in my own business. And that was not, it's just not what I Wanted there had to be a way to take the pressure off to generate sales every single day. And there had to be a way where I could do it and stay focused on my client's success. Now in addition to that, this is why we also started to institute low ticket offers because our or SLOs, I use LTO and SLO interchangeably. Self liquidating offer. Because the idea is that we build an email list of customers, people who said yes to themselves, even to one degree, and then we invite them to become a client where we can expedite their experience and help them get results faster. And so when I did this, it helped me actually generate more revenue for clients because it took off that pressure of like I need to make money now. It also, it'll. I also knew that I had a bunch of offers down from free to accessible, that I could help anyone at any accessibility option that they had at any level, at any. And, and I could actually help more people because even if I was a nonprofit, I would need money, time, energy and effort. And a nonprofit there, there you have two tasks, get volunteers and, and generate revenue. So now my business had the revenue and the profit margin and the health to actually help more people. I also want to have the. This caveat too is, is that, you know, this, this pressure free sales system that I created was a combination of skill. Everyone want to say, oh, it takes time. It takes time. It's not about time. It's about the reps and how fast you can acquire skill, how fast you can move through disappointment, how fast you could pay attention to yes and not no and then how you can manage your expectations. This is something I shared with my accelerators in, in their emotional regulation call, which I'm about to do now, is that people who are super successful, they're not exempt from disappointment and from failures. I don't really like to use the word failures because, you know, it's really just combination of lessons. Get the lesson, extract the lesson, learn from it and go through it faster. But we're humans and when we get bogged down by the human experience, which me too, of course, me too, you're not alone. So successful people are not exempt from that. They just move through it faster. That's it. And so sometimes for me I have to remind myself that my expectations of what it's going to take me to do something is going to be different than someone who might not have the skill that I have or the speed of skill or the speed speed of how fast it takes me to acquire a skill and so that I have to always constantly remind myself. Like for me, if you told me and you put my back against the wall and said, your kid is not going to eat unless you generate 10k in the next seven days, I, I'll do it. And I know exactly what to do, how I would do it, and I would make sure it gets done. Now, some people, they don't have the skill to do that. And that's fine. It's not critical. I'm not saying that to be critical. It's just something to remind you that expectation management is part of how you're going to move through something faster. Okay. And I also wanted to offer and say, when we're talking about expectation management as well, is that sometimes, at least for me, I had a, an ego. I used to say arrogance, but I'm not necessarily, I'm not arrogant. It's just my ego. Something I took pride in the, like, my work ethic. I had an expectation that I was going to somehow go through something or, or be somewhere where I, I, you know, be somewhere different. And it's not that that's bad, it's just that that's. That I needed to be honest about that. And so what that caused me to do was throw the baby out with the bathwater or take for granted what I did have. And I need to look at that and I need to shift that. I also have built a very lean, mean machine who, who, you know, this is the other thing about revenue is that my business depends on other people getting fed, so I don't have room to mess around. And we're all in it to help raise industry standards for the, for the fitness industry. And so that's, you know, very powerful and a responsibility that I do not take lightly. And so thank you to them. Right. It's not big, big massive team, but it's a lean team to get to keep this machine working. Now, if you want to go deeper and learn more about how we did this and what to do, then definitely check out Simple Scaling. Otherwise, I'm going to catch you on the next episode.
