This is my sacrifice. I got a swollen eye so that I can teach you guys hospital English. So I hope you enjoy this episode and learn a lot from it. It's not even been one week in the US and I'm going to the hospital. I woke up two days ago with a very swollen eye. It's quite painful, especially when I blink or close my eyes. I can feel some pain and it's only getting bigger and bigger as time goes on. So I'm going to an urgent care which is open even though it's Sunday. So hopefully a doctor can see me right away, examine my eye, and give me some ointment or medication to help the swelling go down and relieve a bit of the pain.
Thank you.
Take a photo of my ID. Sorry about that. We're early, right? Especially on a Sunday. Geez. I'll do card. Okay, I think I'm all good. I checked in and filled out some forms, and now I'm in the waiting room just waiting to see the doctor. F-E-C?
Or T? T?
Wait. It hurts. It's a little bit sensitive.
And did that just start today?
Um, no, it started I think 2 days ago.
So what's going on today?
Woke up 2 days ago with, uh, yeah, this swollen eye.
Um, and it can be due to infection or just overgrowth of bacteria.
Okay, I'm just gonna take a look here. I'm just gonna look at the eyelashes.
And do you wear contacts or glasses at all?
No.
No? Okay. You've been putting any drops or anything in there?
No.
Okay.
Yeah.
Um, any redness, like, to the white part of the eye that you've noticed?
I felt like yesterday I noticed tiny bit inside, but nothing crazy.
Yeah. Okay. Okay.
More so when I like blink, I can just feel a little irritation.
Exactly.
It's not like it really hurts, but I can feel it.
Any allergies to anything that you're aware of? No. Okay.
Yeah, I can feel that it's a little sensitive.
Okay. And no cough, fever, chills, body aches?
No.
Any sinus pressure, headaches?
No.
All right, perfect. So yeah, usually this is pretty common. It can be due to either like an allergy or bacteria that can get in your eye.
Okay.
Uh, especially with the change of environment, you know, maybe a little intolerance to the wood stove or whatever you came into contact with. Okay. Um, being outdoors and stuff. So what I would recommend is a steroid orally, which I can send in for you. Okay. So Basically a higher dose in the beginning and then taper down.
Okay.
Take it in the morning, not at bedtime. Okay. Um, and then an eye drop, which I'll send as well, which is like an antibiotic eye drop.
Thank you so much. Yeah.
Okay, any other questions?
I think that's it. I'll live, right?
I think so. I think you'll probably see another day.
All right.
Any drug allergies?
No.
Your papers here. So this one I just printed with some information.
Awesome.
Um, and then this is kind of the after-visit summary.
Okay, perfect.
All right, so you guys are all set.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Thank you so much.
Feel better, safe travels.
Thank you.
Thank you so much. Yeah, you're welcome.
Ready? They do surgery? Yeah, quick one. I just finished up seeing the doctor and it was a really great visit. She said that it's nothing too serious and she diagnosed me with something called blepharitis. I've never heard of it before, but it's basically inflammation of the eyelid, and luckily it's not too serious, so I will survive. The whole visit cost me $100 because I don't have insurance, so they charged me $100 flat to see the doctor. They gave me some information on my condition And the doctor also gave me a prescription, so we will be going to the pharmacy to pick up some medication so that hopefully I can heal faster. In the US, sometimes pharmacies are even in the grocery store, so I came here to pick up my prescription so I can start taking my meds.
Hello.
Hi. I need to pick up a prescription.
Any allergies to medicine?
No.
But it looks like it's really costly, so you're probably not gonna want to have this one without insurance.
Can I ask how much it is?
$259. Woo!
For the eye drop? Yeah. How much is the steroid?
$12.
Okay, yeah, let's, uh, forget the eye drop for now and I'll go for the steroid. That's crazy. Yeah, I'll just take the steroid today then.
Thank you for calling Springfield Urgent Care in Saginaw.
Hi, my name is Callie Anderson. I was in there earlier this morning for a swollen eye. Hi, um, I just went to go get my prescription for my eye drops, and I don't have insurance, so the eye drop was really, really expensive, and I'm wondering if there's like a generic brand for it or something similar at a little bit of a more affordable price.
Okay, just one moment, let me ask the provider.
Okay, okay, thank you.
Send over something different for you.
Okay, okay, thank you.
All right. You're welcome.
All right, bye-bye. Dang, even $50 is crazy for eye drops.
Terrible.
If we live here, I'm still going to fly to Korea for medical care. It would have been 5 minutes in and out, and yeah, less than $10 for everything. Then I was just in there to pick up a prescription. I didn't get my eye drops, but my provider just called in a new prescription for eye drops. I wanted to see how long it would be when I could pick it up.
That was quick.
Yeah, that was fast.
Wow. Okay, let me see here. Oh yeah, much better. They should have done that the first time, right?
Okay. Yeah, huge difference.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Bye-bye. Thank you.
Bye-bye. Hi. Hello, here to pick up a prescription for Callie Anderson.
This one is $16, so far better. Oh, that's way better.
Yeah, that's so much better. Thanks for your work today. Success! That was an all-day operation. It was. Yeah, we started from 8 AM and now it's what, 4 PM almost? Gail dominated the day. Yeah, but I'm glad we finally got it, right?
Yeah, definitely.
We definitely had a few hiccups. Today. I felt like I had to jump through a lot of hoops just to get my prescription, but I finally got my eye drops and my steroids. We ended up going through a drive-through to pick up my prescription. So when you go to a pharmacy, it's very common to say, "I'm here to pick up my prescription." Technically, The prescription is the form or piece of paper that the doctor fills out for you, but in everyday conversation, this is a very common phrase that we use in the US, and it refers to the actual medication. So it took a bit longer than usual, but it was a success, and I got all of my medication. My eye is not contagious and it was actually a little bit cheaper than I expected. As you probably know, American healthcare is not the cheapest, so I expected to pay a ton of money, but I ended up paying around $130 USD for the doctor visit and 2 medications. So still pricey, but not terrible. I'm glad I got it all figured out, and I hope my eye heals quickly. I hope you learned something from this video and enjoyed coming on this long medical journey with me today. I will be making a lot more videos of natural everyday English that I use here in the US. So make sure to subscribe to my channel and I will see you next time. Goodbye.
