How can I improve my English speaking? The answer is to speak. Luckily, you don't have to go to the US or the UK to practice your English speaking. Now I am in Itaewon and there are many foreigners here, so you can come here and practice your English speaking. Today I am with my husband who is Korean and he is going to complete some missions here in Itaewon to see if he can can practice his English without ever leaving the country. First mission is to order coffee, and you must ask 3 questions while ordering. How do you feel about doing these missions today?
I usually don't talk while ordering, so I'm a little shy.
Maybe by the end of the day you'll get more confident. Let's go get some coffee. We just got a table at Plant Cafe. I'm going to stay at the table while Hong goes up to order by himself and ask his 3 questions.
Can I order? Yes, yes. I'd like to have a pumpkin spice latte.
Pumpkin spice latte, hot or ice?
Ice.
Oh no, sorry, hot please. Hot.
Is soy milk okay with you?
Uh, do you have almond milk too? Almond milk, yes.
Do you want whipped cream on top?
Uh, no thanks. Callie, do you want whipped cream on top or no? Uh, okay, okay, sorry. Yeah, whipped cream please. And I would like to have a dessert. Do you guys have any good dessert recommend with the pumpkin spice? That's so difficult.
Yeah, everything you see here, we make it.
Oh, homemade?
Yeah, homemade. It's really difficult question because everything is so delicious.
You sound like I need to order more than one. Okay, maybe I'll choose one and you can you choose one for me then. Yeah, I'll choose, uh, the blueberry Berry almond crumble. Yeah, it's really good. I think so.
I do like chocolate. Do you like something fruity?
I like fruity one.
The lemon Earl Grey is really good.
I'll do the lemon.
Lemon?
Yeah, yeah. Can I have one iced coffee too?
Just iced Americano?
Yes. Do you have different beans too, or just one bean? Just one bean. Okay, okay. Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
Nailed it. Yeah, nailed it.
You nailed the recommendation.
Mission 1 cleared, passed with flying colors. Good job. I was actually really impressed. So I was sitting there and could hear him asking all these questions.
I tried.
So now we're on to our second location for mission 2. We are going to Callie Kitchen, which is a popular American bar and restaurant here. And the next mission is to try doing a bit of small talk with the owner or some of the staff.
I usually like delivery better.
No interaction.
I don't like interaction.
I'm letting the bird out of the nest here. Going in by yourself and in English.
You can do it. No, no, no. Challenge accepted.
Go.
Bye.
Hello. What's the most popular menu here?
Most popular? Yeah, this one is like bun, patty, and then slice of butter.
What about taco?
Taco, we have like Okay, I would recommend anything like carnitas because our carnitas are good.
Good. Okay, maybe just a burger and 2 pieces of carnitas. And do you guys have any chips or dips?
We have nachos, chips and dips.
I'll have nacho chips with guacamole. Yeah, and Coke Zero, please. Thank you. I was wondering, the guy from the TV was having a burger.
Hector?
Yes. Which burger was out of this?
That's a butter burger.
Butter one that I ordered.
Special butter Korea.
So I need to be in here. You graduate from here?
Wow.
Brought you here, uh, Korea. The patty is evenly cooked. That is sophisticated, you know, cooked to perfection.
What the heck, this is so good! Wow, it's like salty but in a way that like pickles my brain. It's so good. I never thought of butter as a topping for a burger. That's the one So it's right, you know, he was really right.
Yeah, it was really good. Would you mind if we get a box or take out or something? Yeah, thank you. Bye.
See you.
Bye. So lovely.
I wanted to be her friend.
Well, I am her friend, so—
wow.
I can't say for sure because I wasn't there the whole time, but I think it was a success. Was it awkward, like, starting the small talk?
I think at first a little bit, but she was very friendly for the small What was the opening line?
Always, "Can you recommend?" That's good though, because small talk changes so much depending on the context. I think it's good you're starting conversation based on the situation. Good job! Big success! Now we are heading to a bar, and this is the hardest challenge. Your mission is to make a new friend. So not the staff, not a worker there, but just another customer. You have to just approach some other customers and make a friend!
I haven't done this for like— I don't know 10 years?
Drink a beer and get your liquid courage!
Maybe I need alcohol... Hahaha!
I'm scared to see what condition you're gonna be in when I pick you up! Alright let's see how it goes!
You leaving me in the dust?!
Go go go go go go go! Oh my god!
Why am I going!? I'm too sober for this! Man there's no one around here! Hey, uh, just me.
You can sit wherever you want.
Can I sit at the bar too? Of course. Yeah, thank you.
So today we have nachos on special, and also we have 2 tacos for $8.
Do you have a drink menu too? Drinks menu?
Yes.
London Pride, it's a new beer.
I'll have that. Thank you.
Do you want to try any shots? I was experimenting for Halloween.
Oh wow, yeah, sure. Uh, what's This crazy looking, this one.
This one is Tabasco with vodka. You should drink it without thinking.
Okay, did you try?
Yeah, I tried it.
Yeah. Oh, thank you. What did you try?
I just had a spoon of dessert.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Wow, that was spicy. Yeah. What would you recommend out of this?
Oh, the beef.
Beef one? Okay, I'll take your recommendation. Can I have a beef pie? Do you come here pretty often?
Yeah, I love your process.
Oh, okay. You're kind of off today early?
Yeah, I get off like 4:30.
Oh, nice.
Happy hour too.
That's a good combo.
Not bad at all.
So you moved very recently?
Got to this area 2 years ago.
Uh, Hong, by the way. Nice to meet you.
Ryan.
Ryan, nice to meet you. How's living around here? I always wanted to live around this area but never had a chance.
This feels like Canada.
Oh, you're from Canada?
Close to Toronto.
Toronto. My wife's from Michigan. Michigan, not too far from Canada.
Also, we have pineapple margarita today. Do you want to try?
Sure. Would you drink margarita too? I'll buy for us.
I love working in the bar.
Yeah, UFC. Do you have any like favorite guy?
Pereira. He's just like a champion. He's like came in from kickboxing He has like the hardest punch in history.
Oh shit!
Do you know the Korean Zombie?
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That fight was his—
yeah, the last one when the whole audience is singing the Cranberries.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that was crazy.
This show's crazy.
I like it.
Have you watched?
I'm obsessed with it.
Yeah, I think they made it really well. Yeah, I've heard all the chefs here, it's like booked through until the end of the year, especially the semi-final, the tofu one. That's crazy.
Yeah, yeah, you're never gonna see that in America. Exactly.
Thank you. Ah, wow, it's good.
It's good, eh?
It's really good. My grandmother's recipe. Do you cook sometimes at home?
Yeah, I enjoy it.
You do? Nice. You have like your Special.
Uh, the Korean food is galbijjim. Yeah, dude, I've got a good recipe.
No kidding, really?
It's a lot of work. I made it for my ex. Yeah, like when I made it, I brought it over because her mom would send me galbijjim. Oh yeah, I sent galbijjim to their house, and then brother and sister were like, we like yours more, but we can't tell our mom.
Whoa, you make this slow roast?
Gochujang chicken.
It looks like from the restaurant. Yeah, Ryan made this experiment.
Okay, okay, it's experiment.
She said don't think, just drink.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Cheers! Thank you, thank you so much. Ooh, that was nice!
How was it?
Really good.
I'm happy.
Are you from Kazakhstan? Yeah. How long have you been in Korea?
3 years now.
That's cool. Have you been working at Sauce for quite a while?
Almost 7, 8 months. Okay. But I used to be a regular here before.
Okay.
We had a million won bet.
Really?
Not a million won.
Is it won or dollar? You heard him say won.
We got it, Ryan.
Ryan. Cheers.
Cheers. Cheers.
Cheers. Ryan, do you do Insta or any type of social media? Maybe we can grab. Yeah, for sure, for sure. Aisha, do you have any like Instagram or something?
Yeah, but my stories are dumb, so I don't mind.
You want to bet who's dumber? Yeah, come! Thank you, Ryan. Thank you, I appreciate it. Thanks for the shot, Aisha. Really appreciate it. I love all the food you gave me. Thank you, I appreciate it.
Your face is looking a little red.
All right.
That's it for today practicing English in Itaewon. So what did you learn from today?
I was really shy at first, but they are pretty friendly and open up to me. Eventually at the bar I made good friends, so I might go back to bar.
Do you recommend Koreans who are wanting to practice their English come to Itaewon?
For sure. A lot of people here are open to make a new friend.
I think too if you want to practice speaking but you're a little bit scared and shy, do it kind of how you did it today with levels. Take baby steps. Just try ordering coffee and asking a few questions.
Maybe a tip will be trying to find their interests. So for example, Ryan was interested in UFC and then a cooking show, so we were kind of talking about the topic and he talked more and more and more.
That's a good tip. Well, was today fun?
It was.
Yeah, I don't think I have to ask that question. I think it's obvious you You did so good today. I'm so proud of you.
Thank you. I feel more confident right now. I feel like I can do more.
