Tall, handsome, kind of more old-fashioned name.
All of these names are very girly, kind of a bigger guy.
My 3 favorite girl names would be—
What are the best English names according to Americans? Let's find out. I recently posted about English names and we got too many comments. I couldn't respond to all of them, so today I'm asking Americans how they feel about the most highly requested names in the comments and what their favorite English names are. Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Jem.
I'm from Hawaii in the USA.
I'm an English teacher here. And how long I've been here? Oh, 10 years or so. Long time.
Hi, my name is Hongji. I lived in New Jersey for most of my life, and I've been here for now 6 years studying at university, and I'm soon to be headed back to the States.
Hey, what's up? My name is Zae. I'm from Texas, grew up in South Carolina. I've been here for about 7 or 8 I teach, I model, I do a lot of running, and I host events here in Korea.
My name is Ren. I'm from Texas. I've been in Korea for 11 years, and I'm a freelancer and an after-school English teacher.
My name's Jacob. I've been in Korea for almost 5 years now. I'm originally from California. I'm a teacher here.
I'm going to give you a series of names. I want you to tell me what image or what vibe each name gives you, and be totally honest, don't filter. First name, Olivia.
I think Olivia has a really good image. Olivia is gorgeous, but she's also very smart.
Olivia is such a classic name. I think it just reminds me of a very sweet little girl, very pure, very feminine. It's a very common name too, but I think it has overall good connotations.
I think of someone that has like a very bubbly personality, very outgoing, very friendly, very kind, and it's just always down hang out.
Olivia is a girl girl, you know, she thinks she knows it all.
A know-it-all.
A know-it-all, yes. She wants everyone to know she knows it all as well.
I didn't know too many Olivias growing up. When I hear the name, I just think like maybe pretty, very into fashion, probably wears a lot of makeup. I guess that's what I would think of when I hear the name Olivia.
Ethan.
You know what, I have a lot of friends who named their son Ethan, so it's a popular name. I think Ethan is tall, maybe handsome, and cute at the same time.
I have known Ethan in my life. So one Ethan that I know was a jock, like a typical, you know, athlete, maybe doesn't study so much. But then the other Ethan that I know is a complete nerd. And so I have those two images. I think it's like one or the other.
When I think of Ethan, I think of someone who does like sports, kind of jock, that's kind of a strong dude who was very active, very much so in the gym, and just kind of a bigger guy, you know.
Ethan, oh, a little bit rambunctious. They want to be the funny ones in class.
Class clown?
Yeah, a little bit class clown, yeah.
As a teacher, I've had a lot of Ethans. However, I'd still think of Ethan as like a smart, intelligent, sometimes can be maybe like a trickster, kind of get into mischief, but in a smart, witty way.
Riley.
I automatically think of the movie Inside Out. Riley is kind of cute, maybe a teenager. In Hawaii, this kind of aloha vibe, very chill, very relaxed kind of person.
Riley gives off a little bit of a more athletic, maybe slightly tomboyish vibe. It might be influenced because of the character from Inside Out. That's the only Riley that I know, but it's definitely more of like a tomboyish name.
When I hear Riley, I think of a woman who's like really down to earth, very outdoorsy, likes to go camping, kayaking, might do a little bit slacklining, but someone that you can just hang out with and not really care too much about what you talk about, like very open person.
Riley, Rileys are usually very quiet or they can be very social, but They're not going to be the loud ones in the classroom. They're not going to take over.
So they're like a people person, but on the quiet side?
Yes, more on the quiet side.
Actually, Riley is one of my favorite names even for girl or boy, 'cause for me it can be like unisex. It could be a boy's name or a girl's name. Sweet person, nice, very kind, also intelligent, smart.
Jay, I imagine he, if we're talking about a man, is very athletic, maybe tall. Já tall, maybe huge, so really good at sports, especially football. I don't know why football comes to mind.
J also kind of feels like a little bit of a player or someone who likes to have fun, someone who isn't too serious about life.
When I hear the name J, I think of a guy who's very chill, relaxed, doesn't really take life too seriously, is very open to meeting new people, and just is always a good vibe. There's always a J that's out with you.
The J's are the cool kids. They're the cool ones. They're very chill, but they also like to bother other people. They like to, you know, tease people and they enjoy it. But they're usually also very smart.
They get up in other people's business, kinda.
Yes, yes. They enjoy, you know, bothering others, but they also get their work done.
I think I really didn't know too many J's until coming to Korea. I would say rambunctious, high-energy, outgoing. Probably into sports, likes to be the center of attention. Yeah, maybe long hair.
Got that long surfer hair.
Yeah, exactly.
Sue.
Sues are very prim and proper. They follow the rules. They study very hard.
Sue to me feels like a very, like, old name. It's so traditional. I think I would imagine Sue being my friend's parents, but maybe not so much my friends. Maybe like knitting or something like that.
I think of the sweetest, kindest person you ever know. Someone that really takes care of you and and vice versa, you take care of them, and just very friendly, someone that you can always depend on.
We love Sue.
We love a good Sue.
Sues are the ones who want to be the best in the class, but they're usually not the best in the class. Sorry, Sue.
A little perfectionist.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Goody two shoes. Goody two shoes is better. Goody two shoes.
Maybe it's just me, but I think of it as kind of more old-fashioned name. They're all like my parents' generation. When I think of the name Sue, I think of somebody that's older, professional, had a family, kids.
Joe. Joe is Joe is probably a farmer. Joe wears a hat all the time. He has a tractor instead of a car. That's who Joe is to me.
There's this like famous or typical phrase in English, average Joe. To me, Joe just feels so plain. Joe is Joe.
Just a normal guy.
Yeah, exactly.
Joe is your guy. Like, he is the handyman of handymans. Like, he knows how to fix anything. If he doesn't know how to fix it, he knows a guy. Joe is very resourceful. Just a guy who's like super helpful.
Yep, I can picture it.
Joe's chill, just a chill person, chill kid. Joes don't really cause problems, they just enjoy where they are.
Joe, I actually have people in my family named Joe, I have close family friends named Joe. I guess I would have a good image of the name Joe. The Joes I know have always been very nice, caring, good listeners.
What are your top 3 favorite girl names?
Lily, Daisy, Rose. Some people might feel Rose is old-fashioned, but you know, roses are always beautiful, so I think that kind of name will always be popular. Flower names.
My first one is Emma or Emily. I really like that E-M sound. My second one is anything with Belle or Bella in it, so Isabelle, Isabella, just Bella on its own. And then my last one is Chloe. I think all of these names are very girly feminine names, and I don't know why, but they just remind me of pink. So yeah, I like those 3 names.
I like Victoria. Isabelle is a nice one because it's similar to my name. I'm gonna go with—
Callie Anderson.
I was gonna say one of my sister's names, but I have 5, so I can't pick one. I'm gonna go with Elena. That's my mom's name.
My 3 favorite girl names would be Lily, Luna, and Joy.
Lily is your daughter's name, right?
It is my daughter's name. It is after the flower. I think flowers are so beautiful, and I think that's a little special.
Hidden beauty, you know?
And Luna, same Sailor Moon, you know, Sailor Moon's cat was Luna.
I knew you'd say Sailor Moon!
Beautiful name. And then Joy, you know, you hear the name Joy, you think about joy, it just brings you a smile. So I really love those names.
Riley is on the list. Well, it's actually on the list for girl or boy. Other girl names, probably Emma, Emily.
How about your favorite boys' names?
I do like a strong name like Anthony, Antonio, Antoine. For me, it just kind of brings up a positive image. So all variations of the name Anthony always make me think of a strong person or strong character.
I really like the name Caleb. I knew a kid named Caleb in school and he was the sweetest boy. And then I also really like the name Josh, which I think is a typical athlete player type name. Josh or Joshua, you know, Josh for short. And then my last favorite is a very classic boy name, which is Matthew. Any type of person can have the name Matthew and it works.
I'd say number 1, Ezekiel. I like Sean. Sean's a fun name. And then 3, Joseph.
Robin, Jake, and Kevin. There's someone special in my life named Robin. For Kevin, Home Alone. I feel like all the Kevins I've met, they can be a little bit intense, but they are very highly intelligent kids. For Jake, I just like all the Jakes. No problems with any Jakes.
Ooh, boys' names are a little tougher. Noah, Caden, Henry. I think these days Noah is a popular name. I never knew a Caden, but I just like the name because it's very unique.
All right, thank you so much.
No problem.
