Merry Christmas, everybody! I can't believe that this year is already coming to an end. I've been reflecting on 2024 and just thinking about how grateful I am for each and every one of you. So I decided for Christmas I wanted to play Santa this year. I will be doing a giveaway for anybody watching this video. I have picked out a few of my favorite books and we will be giving away 10 books to our subscribers. So make sure to watch this video until the very end because I will give all the details on how to participate. I've taught many different students throughout the years and I always hear that one of their New Year's resolutions is to read an English book, but they have a hard time reaching their goal. They often tell me that it's because it's too difficult or they don't have enough time in their schedule, so they just eventually give up. I personally am a huge reader. I even started my own book club. I've encouraged and helped many of my friends improve their English reading and work on their reading skills. After this video, you'll be able to finish one English book, and I will give you some tips on how to improve your English reading. One of the biggest mistakes that a lot of my students made was choosing the wrong book. Even my very beginner students chose novels that were very thick and had advanced vocabulary, and it was just too difficult for them, so eventually they gave up. I think one of the most important things to consider when you want to start reading English books is choosing a book that is suitable for your level and also choosing one that you're interested in. That way you look forward to reading it. How can you choose a book that is appropriate for your level. For beginners, I would recommend graphic novels because not only is the text usually a bit more short and simple, but they also provide images. You can understand the context and what's happening in the book a little bit more easily. For intermediate learners, I recommend choosing chapter books or shorter young adult novels. These are definitely a step up from the graphic novels because they usually don't have images, but the text is written for teenagers or for first readers, so the language is usually a little bit more simple and approachable. Hi! Bye now! Young adult is actually a whole genre in the US, so if you search young adult novels, you will get so many options, but in a bit I will share some of my favorite recommendations with you. And for advanced learners, you really need to choose something that is interesting to you. You could also find something that you relate to. For example, maybe something related to your job. One app that I really recommend using is called Goodreads because I can research different books that I'm interested in and see what other people are people are saying about it. I would say if there is at least 4 stars, then you know it's a great book because book critics are very harsh. So if it's got 4 stars, it's bound to be good. Now that you've learned how to choose the correct book, I'm going to teach you how to read to help improve your English. When you're reading and you come to a word that you don't know, don't look it up the dictionary right away. I think this is a mistake that many people make. They overuse their dictionary while reading. So if you come to a word that you don't know, first I would try to guess what it is based on the context in the book alone. Once you've highlighted it, forget about it for a minute. Continue reading, and when you finish reading for the day, Then you can go back and look at all of your highlighted words. Sometimes when people read and use their dictionary, they have to go back and forth between the book and the dictionary. They can easily lose interest. It's just too much work. Next, I recommend whenever you finish reading for the day to write at least a 1 or 2 sentence summary about what you've read. This will help you retain all of the information that you learned from reading, and it will also help you preview and think about what will come next. Finally, if you want to take it a step further and practice your English listening and speaking along with your English reading, I would recommend doing the following things. First, you can practice reading the book aloud. It helps train your mouth to say these things out loud. Number 2, try downloading an audiobook. This will improve your listening as you follow along in the book and pay attention to the pronunciation. This is also a good chance for you to improve your speaking as well because you can shadow. So listen to the audiobook and say it out loud as you follow along. So this is an excellent method because you are reading listening and speaking all at the same time. And third, if there is a movie or TV show adaptation of the book, I recommend watching that as well. This can improve your comprehension, give you some visuals of the book, and it's just a really fun way to enjoy what you've read again. Let's get started on those 20, 25, Reading goals, everybody. I am going to recommend 5 different books and we will be giving away 10 books in total. So to participate, I want you to write the number of the book and why you chose that book in the comments below. For beginners, I have 2 books to recommend. The first book I want to recommend is a graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier. The title is Smile. It is a very popular book these days for beginner readers. This author, Raina Telgemeier, is also very trendy in the US these days. She's written many graphic novels and they are all bestsellers. It is about a girl that gets braces at a young age, and even though it is aimed at a younger crowd, I've heard So many adults say that they even enjoyed reading this book. The second graphic novel that I want to recommend is The Baby-Sitters Club. This one is a little bit close to my heart because it is an adaptation of an older book series. I grew up reading The Baby-Sitters Club. These books talk about a group of girls that babysit kids in order to earn money. So I think it's not only an interesting read, but kind of a good introduction to this culture of America as well. I myself was a babysitter, and I think it's very common for young American kids to babysit for their first job. So maybe you can learn a bit about American culture as well. Book number 3 is for intermediate learners. Holes is about a group of boys at a detention center, and their punishment is to dig holes every day, all day. It sounds strange, but it's very entertaining. I read this book when I was in middle school, and I fell in love with it. Almost all American students have read this book at one point in their lives. The wording is very simple and approachable, and the plot is so interesting. It's such an entertaining book that they have even turned it into a movie. Highly recommended. Book number 4 is Matilda by Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl is probably one of my all-time favorite authors. I think he is a very popular author globally. I've used Roald Dahl books in many of my classrooms teaching, and I think that they are very fun and whimsical books. Matilda is about a very smart girl with special powers, and the novel tells about her life and how she has terrible parents and how she uses these superpowers in her everyday life. Book number 5 is A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. I actually read this book very recently. This book is very heartwarming and touching. It's actually a New York Times bestseller and stayed on the list for 42 weeks. Ove is about a grumpy old man and how he interacts with others in his community. They made a play out of it and they also made a film out of it. So it was extremely popular in the US. Just make sure to have some tissues with you when you read this one. So again, remember to check out the pinned comment below for more details about the giveaway and comment the number of the book that you want to receive and tell us why you chose that book.
