I proposed to a married woman. Huh?
We've been married for 3 years and together for 12. How come we didn't get married sooner?
Don't blame me.
Explain yourself.
We moved a lot, even countries. We met in Hong Kong, we moved to America, we moved to Seoul. I feel like we didn't really settle down.
Excuses, excuses.
Why do you blame me? You can propose to me.
That's true, I could have, but would you want that?
No.
I didn't think so. To be fair, for a long time I wasn't sure if I wanted to get married either. I was very certain about him, but marriage in general just kind of freaked me out, to be honest.
So I freaked you out?
You didn't freak me out. Marriage freaked me out.
Actually, we both thought marriage is a little bit of a social paperwork document.
We were rebelling against the system. We're gonna do our own thing.
Both of our parents And grandparents want us to married.
I remember one time your grandma is like, "I don't need you to get married, bring us a baby." At that point, I think she had given up on us getting married because we were together for like 10 years before we got married. Everyone was kind of pressuring us to get married on both sides of our family. And the funny thing is even my friends were kind of asking me about it because actually I had been in a relationship the longest but I was the last friend out of my friend group to get married. A lot of my friends, I would say at a younger age, got married, bought houses, had kids. We weren't doing any of that. We still aren't doing half of that, to be honest.
They're so grown up.
I know. When I see my friends having babies, I'm like, but I'm still a baby myself, I feel like.
Yeah, I can't even take care of myself. How can I take care of a kid, you know? I feel like I was not really prepared to take care of the whole family financially or mentally. So I wanted to be a little bit more prepared as a husband, I would say.
I understand. I think there's a lot of pressure on people to be prepared, but to be fair, no one is ever prepared for like starting a family.
I think we have a trigger though. COVID hits.
Yeah, I think COVID kind of changed our perspectives because everything was just so uncertain. I wasn't sure if anything were to happen, could we go to each other's country? Would we be stuck in our own countries? And I know a lot of people going to the hospital and they only allowed family into the hospital rooms with people. And it was just kind of a wake-up call for me, I guess. It is a piece of paper, but maybe it's an important piece of paper.
We gotta move.
So during COVID we just had a talk in bed one night. Should we just get married? Let's go for it. And we decided to go down to City Hall first you know, sign the papers and get legally married before any wedding plans. I feel like in the US usually there's a big proposal, someone pops the question, and you get photos, and it's a big announcement. So when I called my family on the phone, I was like, "Hey Mom, hey Dad, um, I think Hong and I are finally gonna get married," and they were like, "Oh my gosh, congratulations! How did he ask?" Um, we were just talking about it and decided to do it together. But my family did not care about that. They love Hong, so they were just very excited about it. And my dad especially, he's a little bit more traditional. So with us living together, he was very happy to hear that we were finally going to actually get married. We went down to the city hall, and I just remember how fast it went.
And then they give us this paper. There's a warning on top. There's no going back.
Caution! Do you know what you're doing? Are you sure you want to do this?
We took a photo in front of the building and then we posted on Instagram like maybe a week later. And then I got so many DMs from my friends. "Hey, you're trying to do the same thing as BinJinoh!" I love BinJinoh. I'm a big fan of him. But you know what? We did it like a couple days before that.
Earlier that day you had told me to pack a bag.
Yeah, because my family are visiting. So I asked her to, oh, let's go to a hotel so they can stay at our house as an excuse, actually, because I was preparing my proposal.
We ended up going to a super fancy hotel, like 5-star hotel.
You didn't have any idea that I was going to propose to you, right?
No, I didn't. I didn't. I would never suspect that because we had just gotten married, and I just thought it was a sweet gift. Maybe it's like romantic. It's like a little mini honeymoon, hokkans thing. And we got there and I opened the door and there were like rose petals, our photos like all over the place. He got down on one knee and he was like, will you marry me? Well, it's kind of too late to say no now.
It's a strategy. You saw the paper, there's no going back. Were you really surprised?
Yeah, I was really surprised.
Nice.
And then I called my mom again and said, "Oh, now I got proposed to," and I showed the ring. And I think they were confused as well because they knew I got married that morning. They were like, "Wait, what? Isn't this a little backwards?" So yeah, you proposed to a married woman.
In Korea, most of the couples, like we did, discuss first about the wedding events, you know, because it's very competitive. You need to book an event hall first, and then guys have that pressure that when I'm going to propose. I asked my girl friends, friends who are female.
I'm just teasing, she's also my friend.
Do you think I need to propose? And then there's like, what the hell are you talking about? And then they were yelling.
Thank you.
They were yelling at me. That was like 2 days before.
Wow, this is new information. This is new to me.
And it was a weekend. I asked all the proposal event company, and of course they are fully booked. So I was like, damn, I gotta do it by myself. Damn it. So I asked some of my friends who can blow up balloons, and I asked another friends to hang some photos, and I went to the department store to get the ring. Everything happened in 1, 2 days.
TMI! You should have kept that to yourself. You should be like, "Oh, I planned this day for years." My friends, they saved my life. And you just ruined it again.
Well, we're married already, so—
Wow.
There's no going back.
But I will admit it was very sweet.
You were a little like mad, like, "Why didn't you come earlier?" I've never been in such a fancy hotel in my life.
We should have been here right at check-in time because we got there late. It was like 11 PM or something crazy. So actually, we didn't spend much time at the hotel. I was like, no, like, I want that pool.
Next time, next time you propose to me and then you can book the whole thing.
Okay, you're out of your mind.
The biggest challenge of this proposal was finding a right ring for you because I don't know about the fancy brand, so I just went to a department store and then there's a Cartier in the first floor, so I just go there and then Maybe this size, maybe? I don't know, just give it to me. It was pretty expensive. It was close to 3,000 baht. I was like, holy— And then I gave it to you. What did you say?
I didn't say anything at first, but then he was like, tell me very honestly if you like this ring or not, because if you don't like it, we can exchange it. So like, please be very honest. I was nice about it. I was like, oh, like, of course it's a beautiful ring and thank you so much. But it's not really my style. It was just like a plain gold band with a diamond. With the diamond. You shouldn't have spent that much money on it. I would say I'm pretty low maintenance in general when it comes to these kinds of things. I would rather spend money on like a honeymoon, traveling together.
So we went to Jongno, actually.
There's just a ton of different vendors there, and I had an idea of what I wanted my ring to look like. My favorite stone is turquoise. Turquoise. I like turquoise more than like a big rock, you know, a big diamond. So then we found a place and they said they could do it, and they just kind of were laughing at our story. Oh, she returned the Cartier ring for this. And they were like, what the heck are you doing?
They told me, oh, you find the right woman, because we bought hers and mine too, and then both of them combining was less than the one ring from Cartier.
And the even funnier part was I said I would buy his ring and he would buy my ring. That was the deal. And then they showed us the prices and his ring was way more expensive than mine.
Not way more.
It made me want to get more diamonds. But genuinely, I love my wedding ring and I do wear it every day except for right now. Show them your ring. Oop-sa! Where is your ring?
I lost my ring at LA, Osa Beach. Doing some stupid stuff. We recently went to the same shop and then got a new one. Unfortunately, the gold price went up so much. This time I paid.
So are you happy we got married?
Yes.
Why do you look scared?
What can I say? Of course I'm happy. Are you happy?
Yes.
Wow.
No, genuinely, I am very happy. That was a really happy time in my life, and even though we had some doubts before getting married. I haven't regretted it at all.
Did you have a doubt? I didn't have any doubt.
I mean, we waited for 10 years. Not about each other, but doubts about marriage in general.
So we signed the paper, I proposed to her, I thought it was the end, but my mom had other plans.
She really wanted us to have a wedding ceremony, but we'll talk about that in our future episodes, so stay tuned for that.
And actually two weddings.
Korean style and American style. Thank you for watching, and we'll see you next time. Bye!
