I'm a teacher in South Korea and I'm trying to do YouTube and teach English. I'm not doing YouTube. No? Okay, okay. Would you mind answering like 5 questions for me?
Sorry, I'm not from here.
I'm from Germany. Could I give you a very short interview? Like 5 questions? Sure!
Yeah?
It's okay? Thank you so much! So first, can you tell me your name, where you're from?
Oh no, sorry. That's New York.
Yeah, there we go. Can you tell me your name, where you're from, and what you do in the city?
I'm Joe. I'm from Westchester County, New York. So it's not too far north of here. I work in technology.
Very nice. If you're starting a fight with someone or someone comes up to you and insults you, like, what will you say in a fight?
Oh, I guess it depends on the situation, right? Like, if they're instigating or— yeah, I'm not usually trying to instigate any fights, but—
Say they're instigating it. Someone off the street just comes up and says, "Fuck you." Like, what would you say?
You say, "Fuck you back." You gotta protect yourself and stand up for yourself.
If you're going to hit on someone at the bar, you see someone very attractive sitting at the bar, what kind of pickup line would you use? Or how would you hit on them?
I think you just say hello and you try to be yourself and, you know, just ask how they're doing and what they're doing, you know, what's going on. And I think it's most important to just be authentic. I think if you go with specific lines, then you know it's not gonna work too well for you. You know, you try to be casual and you say, "Hey, how are you? What are you doing here today?" And, you know, like, just be yourself.
What would you say if you're trying to decline an invitation?
Well, I guess either one, not responding to that invitation.
What if they ask you to your face?
Well, I guess you just say you're busy that day. You have some other plans, or you know, respectfully decline, I guess.
Good, good. How do you compliment somebody on their outfit?
You say, "I like your fit." Yeah, you just say, "I really like that color on you," or "I really like the way that looks." You could say, "I'd wear something similar." It's like you compliment guys or girls, doesn't matter. It could be just being nice to somebody on the street. You know, we try to be nice to people too here in New York.
That's good. And last one: What do you say to break an awkward silence?
Ooh, break an awkward silence. I don't usually keep a lot of silence. I mean, you can just ask a question. I think you just kind of like turn the conversation around, so you ask, something different. Use something in your surroundings, be like, "Oh, what's that?" or "Have you been to that place before?" or "Oh, have you tried this thing before?" Right? So just posing a question to just get the conversation started again.
Okay, that's a great tip. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
So you're living in Korea, you said?
Yeah, yeah, we live in Korea. So we're just visiting here for the week.
For the holidays.
Yeah.
This is like as cold as it gets in New York City.
I'm like, this is the day we're doing the street interviews too. Like, come on. Okay.
Well, good luck to you.
Thank you so much.
Stay warm.
Yeah, thank you. Merry Christmas. Take care.
Hi. Hi, my name is Yoni and I'm a fashion designer slash creator in New York City.
Nice, where are you from?
Oh, I'm from Korea, the city called Daegu, not Seoul. I'm a Daegu family.
Daegu, represent! If someone was starting a fight with you, what would you say to them in English?
Fuck off! Because in New York you have to be like aggressive because people sometimes approach you like aggressively and then you just, you just like need to show them like you're not easy target.
True, New York It's tough. You gotta be tough out here. What would you say if you were trying to hit on somebody at the bar?
Oh my god, that would never happen because I'm such an introvert.
You see a cute boy and you want to shoot your shot.
Oh my god, I'm gonna be like, "Hey, what's your digit?" Like, "Can I text you?" I think that's good with the like— Yeah, a little bit like shy.
Make him come to you, right? Yeah, mysterious. I like it. What do you say if you're trying to decline an invitation? Like an invitation to a party and you don't want to go?
I'm more like a couch potato. I'm more like introvert. I really enjoy myself like indoor, not to party. And then my close friends knows, and then they don't usually invite me to like big party. But if they ask me, I'm gonna be like, "I have things to do." And then sometimes I do give like specific reasons, like, "Oh, my dirty clothes piled up.
I need to do laundry." The more specific, the more believable.
Yeah.
Or like, "Oh, I have to wash my hair." "Today is my wash day." Yeah, "Today is my wash day, I'm sorry." That's a good tip.
Be specific. Noted, noted. How do you compliment someone on their outfit?
Oh, that is easy. I just like, "Oh, I like your outfit." "I like your shoes." "Where is it from?" "It suits you." "It's your vibe." Yeah, I think I always say, "It's your vibe." Sounds very like Gen Z slang, kind of. It's your vibe.
It's your vibe. This one's hard. What do you do if you're stuck in an awkward silence?
That's me like every single day. Not a single minute, I think.
Right now?
Not right now.
Let's say with a stranger.
With a stranger, I'm just gonna be like, keep being awkward.
No breaking the awkward silence?
No, why? Why would I?
Okay, fair enough. What about with your customer?
Oh, with my customer, I'm gonna be like, oh, like, do you live here? Is it too cold today? Like a very like small talky thingy. I'm not a big fan of small talk. But with my customer, weather, outfit, or like I ask if they have pets, cat or dog person.
Very nice. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
My name is Sydney. I'm from Oregon originally, but I live in the city now. I live in Brooklyn and I work in sales.
Oh, very nice. What would you say if someone's trying to like start a fight with you?
I would say, "What?" It's like confusion. Yeah, confusion probably.
Okay, or if you want to like say something mean to somebody, what would you say?
Oh no, I don't know. I don't know what I would say if I was trying to be mean.
Um, "Sauf!" You're so nice.
I really don't know what I would say in that situation.
Okay, that's okay. Okay, what would you say if you're trying to hit on someone at the bar? Oh my God, like a pickup line.
Oh my God, this is, this is what I've done before, and it's not a pickup line. Necessarily, but it works. Just maybe a little hand touch, and then I always say is like, "Are you single?" Okay, that's literally all I have to say. And then usually you can either tell like if they're interested right away, um, and also you know if you're— they're single or not, because then it's like, what's the point of even flirting with them if they're not single?
Right to the point, right to the point.
And it works, the guys like it. Awesome.
How would you compliment someone? Like if you want to compliment compliment someone on their outfit, what would you say?
Okay, if I was walking past you, I love your outfit. That's all I would do. I'm very physical touch, I think. I like, I love your outfit, and then I just keep on.
What would you say if you wanted to decline an invitation? So if someone invited you to a party and you didn't want to go, what would you say?
I would just be honest. I would say like, I appreciate the invite, but I don't think I'll be able to make it.
What would you say to break an awkward silence?
Oh gosh, I would probably ask them a question. Like, if it's an awkward silence between like strangers, I guess, "What are you guys up to today?" Okay, probably just ask them any sort of question. People like to talk about themselves. Good tip.
Okay, thank you so much. Really appreciate it.
Yeah, you're so sweet.
Have a good one. Merry Christmas.
Uh, my name is Annie. I live in Brooklyn and I'm a producer.
Are you originally from New York?
I'm originally from up Upstate New York.
Oh, cool. So if you're getting in a fight with somebody, if someone comes up to you very aggressively and tries to start a fight with you, how do you respond in English?
I would probably cry.
Just like tears right away?
Yeah, just, why are you doing this to me?
What did I do?
Okay. What's your pickup line? How would you hit on them?
I would maybe buy them a drink and bring it to them and introduce myself.
Very smooth.
Hopefully, hopefully.
What if you want to politely decline an invitation? What would you say?
Aw shucks, I already have plans that day.
What if you want to compliment somebody on their outfit? What would you say?
I do this a lot and it's very straightforward. I love your pants, can I touch them?
Can you touch them?
Maybe not pants, but like jacket or something. It's the textures and patterns usually are what I appreciate about it. So it's always, I love this, and then a pause, and then consent. Can I touch it?
Do people usually let you touch it?
Oh yeah, especially if it's corduroy.
Corduroy, that's good.
Corduroy wants to be touched.
Exactly, it's just begging to be touched. How do you break an awkward silence?
A fart.
That would break the ice for sure.
Laughter, right?
Okay, yep.
Farts are always funny. Or a joke of some sort.
Can you tell me a joke? Do you have a good one?
Oh, since it's Christmas time, uh, how does Santa breathe underwater?
Oh, I have no idea.
He ho-ho-holds his breath.
Ho ho ho!
All right, that's a good one. That would definitely break an awkward silence. All right, perfect. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
My name is My name is Leon Lebesgue. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio, and we're here for the holidays.
Nice, okay, so you're just traveling here now?
Yes, traveling.
Cool. I'm Alyssa Sims, and we came to New York just to visit and explore a little bit.
Very nice.
Yeah.
So if you were getting in a fight with someone, if someone instigated a fight with you, what would you say to them?
I don't think there's much to say. There's more doing.
Honestly, if it were me, I would just keep walking and keep going because in New York there's a lot of crazy people, so I feel like it's it's best to just walk away and just let it go.
Good, good. Um, what if you want to hit on somebody at the bar? What's your pickup line?
I think I'm more simple, just go up to them and talk to them. I think it's just what comes natural. What'd I do to get you?
I don't know. For me, I feel like it's different. I kind of just smile and kind of give them a vibe that I actually want to talk to them.
Introduce, get the general gist.
What if you want to compliment someone on their outfit?
I'd say like Looks good.
I would just simply tell them I like your outfit. Where'd you get it?
Maybe ask where they got it from. Yes. If you want to decline an invitation, what would you say? What's your excuse?
I'd easily just make up an excuse. I got sick, family member or something. I'll make something up for sure. I'll let them know I'm not going.
Okay. I would just say thank you for the invitation, but I'll have to pass.
I'll have to pass. Yeah. Last one, you guys. If you need to break an awkward silence, How would you break the silence?
I'll just try to bring up like a conversation. Her family always says, "What about those Cavs?" Like just to like bring up sports, like, "Oh, what about that?" That's what first came to my mind.
I feel like I'd make it more awkward or say something funny or come up with a story or something random to break silence. I feel like I do that all the time.
All right, thank you guys so much. Really appreciate it. Of course. All right, take care, you guys. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you. Appreciate it.
All right. Have a good day.
Take care.
