A patient with a two-day sore throat talks to a clinician who asks about symptoms, checks for redness, and recommends rest and fluids. Learn medical vocabulary and how to describe health problems in English.
I have a bit of a sore throat.
How long have you had the sore throat and have you noticed any other symptoms?
It started about 2 days ago and sometimes I have a little bit of a cough.
Have you noticed any fever or chills? And is the sore throat constant or does it come and go throughout the day?
It's constant, but I don't have a fever or chills.
Have you had any recent exposure to someone who's been sick?
Not that I know of.
Let me take a quick look at your throat. Open wide and say ah. Your throat looks a bit red, but I don't I don't see any signs of a serious infection like strep. Are you drinking enough water and getting rest?
I think so. I have been a little bit busy lately though.
Sometimes being busy can lead to stress and dehydration, which can make a sore throat worse. I'd recommend drinking plenty of fluids, resting when you can, and maybe trying some throat lozenges or warm tea with honey. If it doesn't improve in a few days or you start to feel worse, come back in so we can check again.
