Cameron Herold argues that most companies fail because leaders don't know how to hire well. Conducting fifty interviews doesn't teach you anything if you keep firing people. He breaks down the interview process: resume screening, preparation, closed and open-ended questions, and the pregnant pause technique.

The number one reason why most companies are struggling is because they say business is difficult. But the reality is business is actually quite easy if you have the core skills to lead and influence others. And the number one skill, or one of the top 2 or 3 skills you need, is the ability to interview and hire people. Now, if you're saying, oh, I know how to interview, I've interviewed 50 people already, maybe you've done it wrong every single time. The way I know this is you've certainly fired some of the people that you thought you liked at the beginning. You certainly learned some more about some of the people after they started and you hoped that it was going to get better. Or maybe you thought that you were going to coach them. But the problem is that most of us have never had enough core training on doing proper job interviews. And this includes the resume screening. It includes the prep for walking into the interview and knowing what you're going to ask and how you're going to ask it and how you're going to handle their questions at the very end. It includes practicing the pregnant pause and closed questions, open-ended questions. And probing. It includes prep and understanding how to leverage a system called TORC. So the key is to train your people on how to do proper job interviews, and you won't wind up with the wrong people inside of your organization. I go very in-depth into the skill of interviewing and selection interviewing in my Invest in Your Leaders training. Go to investinyourleaders.com. We'll see you on the inside.
